Film Review: ‘A LEGO Brickumentary’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 31st, 2015

Janet W., Here…

maxresdefault

When you were a kid, which of your toys was limited only by your imagination?  Dolls?  Cars and fire engines? Your Big Wheel?  For many people, it was LEGOs.  If you could imagine it, with hard work and lots of LEGOs you could bring it to the third dimension.  A LEGO Brickumentary explores the origin, innovation, and longevity of this building block known around the world.  Guided by a trusty LEGO minifigure narrator (Jason Bateman), the film travels from the outer reaches of space to LEGO’s birthplace, Denmark.  What started out as solid red blocks with small knobs to attach it to other blocks (“Clutch Power”) has evolved into translucent, motorized, and magnetic units available in a bevy of different colors.  Chock full of facts and awe-inspiring constructs, A LEGO Brickumentary reveals there is more to this block and its uses are infinite or are they?  For example, the name LEGO comes from the Danish word Leg Godt, which means “play well.”

Hey guys, Jana here,

Emma Donoghue wrote what has become a sensational multi-award winner in ‘ROOM‘, then she wrote a screenplay and worked with director Lenny Abrahamson to bring the final product to the big screen. ‘ROOM‘ is incredibly moving, emotional in ways I didn’t really anticipate with an edge-of-your-seat thriller sensation as well.

Film Review: ‘Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 29th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

bmw-in-mission-impossible-5-rogue-nation_100505432_l

A couple of years later from ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol‘, we have Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his team, consisting of Benji (Simon Pegg), William (Jeremy Renner), and Luther (Ving Rhames) on a mission to acquire a certain dangerous cargo that is about to take off in a military airplane. I’m sure you’ve seen the trailers by now to know that Tom Cruise did indeed do his own stunts again, including actually hanging off the edge of airplane as it took off high in the sky. This is the opening scene to ‘Rogue Nation‘, the fifth film in the ‘Mission Impossible‘ franchise that ignites the bomb and iconic theme song.

The new red band trailer for Seth Rogen’s new film ‘The Night Before‘ is fantastic. Rogen stars with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Anthony Mackie who have been childhood friends. They annually re-convene every Christmas eve for a night of debauchery and decadence, however, since they are older now, this might be the last time they get to party, so they’re going to make this one count.

Hey guys, Jana here,

13-Hours-Book-Cover

As Americans there are moments that made time stand still for our country. The attacks on September 11, 2001 crippled our spirits with the biggest sucker punch in history, and the attack on the American diplomatic compound and the nearby CIA Annex in Benghazi, Libya on the 11th anniversary of that horrid event, ripped that scar wide open. Some may see a film based on the events of that fateful night as a crass money-maker, I see the film as a remembrance and a warning to the future to never let this happen again.

Film Review: ‘Vacation’!

“We’re on a pilgrimage to see a moose. Praise Marty Moose!” Those were wise, unearthing words from America’s family man Clark W. Griswold (Chevy Chase) as he trekked his family from Chicago to California inside the Griswold family truckster back in 1983. Clark, along with his wife Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo), and their two kids Rusty (Anthony Michael Hall) and Audrey (Dana Barron) encountered a variety of hilarious obstacles and problems along their difficult road trip, but they stuck together as a family and proved that any American family can make it across country without killing one another…mostly.

Film Review: ‘Southpaw’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

When it comes to the world of boxing, there have been many films and documentaries that have been released on the violent sport. Some of the movies have done so well both financially and critically, that they have taken home more than one Oscar, and dare I say it, this new boxing film, ‘Southpaw‘ is the best boxing movie since Sylvester Stallone put on boxing gloves in 1976 and put on one hell of a show against Carl Weathers in ‘Rocky‘. Despite its minor flaws, ‘Southpaw‘ is an amazing film from top to bottom. Director Antoine Fuqua (‘Training Day‘) has perfectly transformed Jake Gyllenhaal into a scary, muscular, bloodied monster of a fighter, who you would never want to step into the ring with.

Sure, Apatow has written and produced dozens of films since then, but has only really directed two other feature films since, being ‘Funny People‘ and ‘This is 40‘. The usual actors are nowhere to be seen in ‘Trainwreck‘ either. There is no Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, Martin Starr, or even James Franco to be seen anywhere on screen. Actress and comedienne Amy Schumer wrote the screenplay here for Apatow to direct and the two are a perfect pair.

Needless to say, I’m a huge fan. We’ve seen a ton of incarnations of the famous British detective over the years. Recently though, Holmes has become very popular due to the films that starred Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes and of course the hit BBC series ‘Sherlock‘ that stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock and Watson respectively. The amount of fandom for these projects have even spawned new shows and other films in the past year or so as well. It just seems that we all can’t get enough of Sherlock and those famous suspenseful mysteries.

THE FILM

Yet another ‘American Girl‘ film has been released under the name ‘Grace Stirs Up Success‘. If you’re unfamiliar with the ‘American Girl‘ franchise, you can read my previous hardcore action review of ‘Saige Paints the Sky‘. ‘American Girl‘ is basically a line of actual play dolls for girls ages 4-12. None of the films in this series have anything to do with a doll, but rather try and tell these young girls what life is really like on the outside once out of a federal prison, which brings us to ‘Grace Stirs Up Success‘.

THE FILM

It’s very rare these days that a horror movie consistently delivers on genuine thrills and scares. And I’m not talking so much about the cheap “jump out and scare you tactics”. Not since ‘The Babadook‘ has a movie been more terrifying than ‘It Follows‘, which is a horror film from newcomer David Robert Mitchell who wrote and directed this masterpiece of horror.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Marvel2

Warner Brothers and DC Comics had the con all to themselves as Marvel skipped this year due to not having enough current projects close enough to completion to show off or warrant a big panel gathering. So the Warner Bros. panel was a standing room only crowd and their anticipation paid off as two big trailers debuted for the fans: ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice‘ and ‘Suicide Squad‘ played to roaring approval.

The Best Trailer You’ll See is ‘Ash vs Evil Dead’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

11070925_426786627503135_1142696551623537268_n

Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up. The full-length trailer for ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead‘ series on Starz is finally here, which debuted at Comic Con. This is basically the sequel to ‘Army of Darkness‘ we have all been waiting for and it looks like it’s going to be the best show to even air on pay cable. Bruce ‘man-god’ Campbell is in great shape and still has the Ash character down pact. This looks scary, funny as hell, gory, entertaining, and chock full of glorious one-liners that I just don’t know what I’ll do until the series airs this Fall. So grab your chainsaw and Boomstick and enjoy this Incredible trailer. I’ve watched it more than a baker’s dozen times already.

Film Review: ‘Minions’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 10th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

b1279ad7e58b11c4212e7f8c4a6c6def

Minions have existed since the first amoebas dawned the depths of the ocean.  The film opens under an endless sea of evolution.  From single cell organisms to complex beings, the minions and their cute little eye(s) moved through time serving big bosses from T-Rex to the worst historical monsters.  As loyal of servants as they can be, the minions are the worst bad guy sidekicks, EVER; poor, poor T-Rex never saw it coming.  No wonder why they know and speak in so many languages.  I know I heard Spanish, French, and, of course, gibberish.

The Trailer For ‘Goosebumps’ Looks Fantastic!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 8th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

goosebumps-1-620x400

If you were a child of the 90’s you read ‘Goosebumps‘ books and slept with a flashlight at night. A desire for R.L. Stine’s novellas was the pre-cursor to an adult love affair with Stephen King and all manner of things that go bump in the night. They were a quick read with a few pulse-quickening moments but no real scares to the older teen demographic. If you were in the right age group, though, the books were traded with friends like ‘Sweet Valley High‘ books were in the 80’s. Plots were kept strictly silent so the next friend to read got a full dose of fright. .

Bruce Campbell is back as Ash. He’s re-attaching the chainsaw and gripping his boomstick once again as he faces a deadite invasion after a 30 year lull in the action. Starz is taking the exciting world that gave us three Evil Dead films and re-sizing it for the small screen and we’ve got some of the first images from the set.

Disney just gave us a little more than a peek into ‘The Finest Hours‘. It’s a drama, it’s a thriller and it looks intense, intense as ‘A Perfect Storm‘ for my money. To go further with the comparison, they’re both based on real life events. Starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster, Eric Bana, Holliday Grainger and Casey Affleck.

Film Review: ‘Amy’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 7th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

amy-cannes-film-festival

Amy Winehouse might have been one of the best all time jazz singers in the world. In fact, I believe she still can hold that title, even almost five years after her death. Her voice was something unlike anyone ever heard and could be in the same league as Etta James, Billie Holiday, and Edith Piaf. In addition to her voice, she was charming, witty, and a ton of fun to be around. You just couldn’t get enough of her likable personality. Unfortunately in 2011, Amy died of alcohol poisoning at the age of 27, making her one of the latest members of the ’27 club’, which Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, and Brian Jones all belong to.

Picture this:  You are dying from a fatal malady.  Are you ready to leave the earth?  Have you planned the last things you would do?  Have you said goodbye to those you love?  You realize you will never see them again, right?  These surely were at least some of the thoughts flowing through the mind of Damian (Sir Ben Kingsley).

Film Review: ‘The Three Hikers’!!

Paul N., Here…

Imagine you’re a coach or a CEO of a corporation. Before you are two gifted candidates for a single open position. On the one hand, you have someone who is proficient in all the right areas. They know their craft to near perfection. However, they have no heart. You watch them do the necessary steps, and do them well. But there is no passion, no thrill from them whatsoever. On the other hand, you have a less talented candidate who always gives 110%. They are the first to arrive, and the last to leave. They work hard every single minute to grow in their skill, but you know they will never be as good at it as the first candidate. Who do you take? This is the problem with the film The Three Hikers.

Celebrate your July 4th Holiday with these Films!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 3rd, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

the-sandlot-20th-anniversary-1157_rgb

In the midst of family and friend get-togethers, 37 pounds of BBQ spare ribs, ten gallons of creamy cool coleslaw, floating in a pool, and setting off fireworks, while listening to Neil Diamond’s ‘America’, I also like to enjoy “that one night game a year”, meaning I love to watch July 4th inspired films. I usually do a mini movie marathon of them with the usual food and beverages that go with each film. I’ve done this the past few years, with one year, taking a break to do an all John Carpenter/Kurt Russell marathon. That was a lot of fun. But, for those of you who want to enjoy a movie or three over the holiday weekend, but keep with the spirit of the 4th of July, here are a few suggestions to keep you patriotic.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

A couple of weeks ago, we got a very small teaser trailer for the new series on Netflix, ‘Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp‘, where it acted more as an old VHS camp video, than showing actual footage. Now though, we have actual footage with the entire cast, and it’s so funny, I’ve watched it a dozen times already, and laughed till it hurt. This is the one tv series I’m looking forward to. I so can’t wait, and enjoy. ‘Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp‘ shows up on Netflix at the end of July. And I need this awesome poster on my wall or above my bed.

Film Review: ‘Infinitely Polar Bear’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 2nd, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

maxresdefault

You may not know the name Maya Forbes yet, but you soon will. Forbes’s directorial debut is a little gem of an indie film called ‘Infinitely Polar Bear‘, which she says is an autobiographical film about her growing up in Cambridge Massachusetts, where her mother left for a couple of years to pursue an M.B.A. at Columbia University in order to provide a better life for her family. Meanwhile, Maya’s father was forced to stay at home and take care of her and her sister, even though he was severely bi-polar.

Hey guys, Jana here,

article-0-195FAAE0000005DC-112_634x800

Given Robert Downey Jr’s current state of badassery and awesomeness, I can’t think of anything he could do that would not bring in the fans. Once he turned the corner on his bad boy behavior in the 1980’s, he’s the equivalent of a golden ticket. Team Downey, which consists of RDJ and his wife, Susan Downey, has been harboring the idea of a fairy tale they want to give the live-action treatment. The tale of Pinocchio is one RDJ has been developing for years, somewhat on the sly, with Michael Mitnick (‘The Giver‘) writing the most recent draft while RDJ is ready to board the project as Geppetto, the toy maker.

The sequel to 2013’s ‘Olympus Has Fallen‘ is carrying over most of the original cast but not the director.
