Hey guys, Jana here,

kevin-bacon-cop-car-focus-world-980x551-5730

Kevin Bacon may be forever cemented as Ren, the bad boy with an urge to dance but he has never shied away from exhibiting the dozens of layers that encompass his acting range. ‘Cop Car‘, where Bacon is the quintessential small-town sheriff who just oozes douchebaggery, torments and taunts two young boys that go for a joyride in Bacon’s abandoned patrol car in the woods.

Hey guys, Jana here,

point-break-poster-2015-888x489

The first trailer for the ‘Point Break‘ revamp is making waves. I’m not much of a fan of remakes to begin with, but when you take a Patrick Swayze movie that isn’t old enough to need re-telling and bastardize it, I get a little huffy.

WWE: Mike’s 2015 ‘Elimination Chamber’ Preview!

Confession: I recently confronted the possibility of taking a break from WWE. Or, if you’re being cynical, I briefly considered only watching the highlights of the 12th most important pay-per-view event of the year, while still watching several hours of WWE programming a week.

‘Ash Vs. Evil Dead’ Teaser Trailer is Here! Groovy!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 29th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

ash-vs-evil-dead-slice-600x200

You know how Bruce Campbell always said “Don’t ask about ‘Evil Dead IV’, because it isn’t happening?” Well, don’t take that to the bank, because it is definitely happening in the form of a TV series called ‘Ash vs. Evil Dead‘ for the Starz network. The show will star Bruce Campbell as Ash again and is a sequel to ‘Army of Darkness‘ (the best film ever made). This teaser trailer doesn’t show much, but it does have blood and a chainsaw in it, plus Campbell’s voice, which makes me all sorts of giddy. The series is shooting in New Zealand right now, and we expect more videos very soon. We can’t wait.

Film Review: ‘Felix and Meira’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 29th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

felix-and-meira

If you are one of the five (ok, six) people who saw If Lucy Fell then you understand the importance of subtlety and symbolism. In that film, Ben Stiller plays an “artist” who struggles with that very concept. All his “art” attempts to relay a message, which he claims hides beneath the surface. The problem is that his message is rather shallow and obvious to anyone with a pulse. To quote his character, it “symbolically sucks”. Felix and Meira, though not a train wreck of a film, suffers from the same problem.

Film Review: ‘Aloha’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 29th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

aloha

I am saying “Aloha” to Aloha, but it’s not a hello.  It’s a disappointing goodbye.  Aloha begins with the return to Hawaii of Brian Gilcrest (Bradley Cooper), a former soldier that suffered a horrendous missile attack.  This fact is hard to believe since Cooper is inconsistent in his performance of this impairment.  One minute Gilcrest is somewhat struggling as he walks and the next minute he is effortlessly able to lollygag along the street in a love montage.  Due to his shady history of embezzlement, Gilcrest is assigned a military watchdog Captain Allison Ng (Emma Stone).  Captain Ng is hyper, anal, dry, and in love and proud of Hawaii and her ¼ Hawaiian heritage.  She also greatly admires Gilcrest for his achievements in space, technology, physics or something.  His expertise is not really clear in the film.  During Gilcrest’s previous time in Hawaii he fell in love with Tracy Woodside (Rachel McAdams).  Gilcrest suddenly left Woodside hanging.  What will happen when he sees her again and she him?

Film Review: ‘San Andreas’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 29th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

San-Andreas-3D-Movie-Wiki-563x353

It’s certainly been a while since we got to sit through an epic disaster film that featured earthquakes, volcanoes, twisters, a giant monster lizard, or even a ‘Sharknado‘. Luckily for us, the summer of 2015 has given us ‘San Andreas‘, a full-scale earthquake action picture starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. It shouldn’t be any surprise that director Brad Peyton has teamed up with The Rock again for this disaster flick since their previous ‘Journey 2: The Mysterious Island‘ did so well. Add on ‘Lost‘ writer Carlton Cuse, and you have ‘San Andreas‘, the movie that should be able to hold the championship belt at the box office, at least for a week or two.

You can mark this one off my bucket list. I finally got to talk with director Tom Six. Yes, the Tom Six who directed and came up with all ‘The Human Centipede‘ films. His latest and final(?) installment of ‘The Human Centipede‘ franchise, dubbed Final Sequence is finally out in select theaters and on VOD. If you’re a fan, I highly recommend you watch it. However, Mr. Six and I discuss his work on all three films, his intention for the third installment, and some of his favorite films and scenes from movies. Unfortunately, we had to do the interview over the phone, so there is no video, but the interview is fun none-the-less. Enjoy.

Angelic Heel Once More…

The WWE’s Smackdown blew into Norfolk, VA and it brought with it the return of Roman Reigns! What would he have to say for himself after being soundly defeated by the WWE World Heavyweight Champion at Payback (which can be seen on the WWE Network FREE in the month of May)? The WWE’s tag team division also began to heat up in anticipation of the first ever 6 team Elimination Chamber match in less than two weeks. The Divas got into a war of words and The Lunatic Fringe saw action against the New Face of Fear. Did you miss this week? Find out what happened now!

Film Review: ‘Poltergeist 2015’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 22nd, 2015

Janet W., Here…

Poltergeist-2015-trailer-image-3

Horror, according to Webster: Something that causes feelings of fear, dread, and shock.

Someone should have enlightened the production team of this definition prior to their exploring the “re-imaging” (not remake) of this staple of the horror film genre.  I would not expect real horror in this film.  You will get a Scary Movie version of cheesy horror.  Everything in the 2015 version of Poltergeist is topsy-turvy from its 1982 predecessor.  The Freelings (1982) give way to the Bowens (2015).  Fear, suspense, and horror give way to one-liners and gratuitous special effects.

Film Review: ‘Tomorrowland’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

thumbnail_20656

There’s one hell of a cast and crew at work here for Disney’s ‘Tomorrowland‘, which is loosely based on the famous theme park at Disney resorts. Directed by Brad Bird (‘The Incredibles‘, ‘Ratatouille‘, and the recent ‘Mission Impossible‘ film), produced by Damon Lindelof (‘Lost‘ and ‘Star Trek‘), and starring George Clooney, Hugh Laurie, and Britt Robertson, ‘Tomorrowland‘ is a throwback to those old innovative Disney films full of adventure. I felt like a kid again through its two hour run time as I was watching each suspenseful and fun moment on the IMAX screen. That being said, ‘Tomorrowland‘ does have a few problems, but fortunately the good outweighs the bad this time around.

Film Review: ‘The Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

09-centipede.w529.h352.2x

I can’t believe we have a third film in ‘The Human Centipede‘ franchise. This is supposedly the final film, but I hope there will be others or director Tom Six will come back after a long hiatus and do a fourth film. If you are unaware of ‘The Human Centipede‘ films, allow me to give you a little background. The first film was more or less a straight horror film thru and thru. It had a psychopathic surgeon (Dieter Laser) who kidnapped a few twenty-somethings and sewed them ass to mouth as to form one long digestive track.

Film Review: ‘I’ll See You In My Dreams’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

cdn.indiewire

It’s rare that a movie hits all the emotional notes in a genuine way, rather than hitting you over the head repeatedly, telling you how you should feel. Fortunately for us, the former is true with ‘I’ll See You in My Dreams‘, which is a small indie dramedy by director Brett Haley, which has iconic actress Blythe Danner play one of her best roles yet. Haley uses a soft touch throughout the film as we see new beginnings from people not to far from the end. There are a ton of funny moments with enough subtle drama that mixes into a perfect pie by the end of the film that leaves you wanting more.

FILM REVIEW “SLOW WEST”

by Justin Cline on May 21st, 2015

Justin C., Here…

cdn.indiewire

Westerns, as a film genre, are nearly as old as film itself, the first of which was little more than a short where a bandit leveled his weapon at the camera and blasted unsuspecting viewers. While plotlines have improved markedly since then, there are still those instances where filmmakers show as much care for their audiences as a bullet to the face. In the long lineage of westerns, how fares the latest addition, Slow West?

Film Review: ‘Good Kill’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 21st, 2015

Janet W., Here…

8E9A6700.CR2

Good Kill opens from a drone’s eye view over Afghanistan.  This reality gives the best manifestation of “Death from Above.”  Seven thousand miles away a pilot guides this miniature death bird.  Thomas Egan (Ethan Hawke) wants nothing more than to pilot a F16 again.  Having originally signed up for a one-year tour of duty with the UAVs, Egan is best in class on his 3rd tour.  Physically back from the war, Egan’s life has been diminished in many ways.  He cannot relate to his wife Molly (January Jones) or the domestic life in Las Vegas.  Egan roams between work and home as though he is on autopilot.  Suddenly the “Christian in Action” (aka CIA) hijacks his team for their covert off the books operations.  The job was hard enough with the long distance assassination of unsuspecting enemies.  Now, the call as to whether the person(s) in their sights are the enemy is taken from them.  How long can they continue?

Blu-ray Review: ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Complete Series!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 19th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

91BNj35rUrL._SL1500_

THE SERIES

I remember when the pilot episode for ‘Boardwalk Empire‘ aired on HBO back in 2010, which was directed by Martin Scorsese. After the episode aired, I said to my friends, “that was one of the best pilots to any television show I had ever seen.” They all seemed to agree. What followed was five season of some of the best storytelling set in the prohibition era of America, complete with historical figures and gangsters. It was almost like it was ‘Goodfellas‘, but set in the early 1920s. The series followed Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi), who was based on a real guy, who secretly controlled the Boardwalk in Atlantic City and bribed politicians and presidents to make his rise to power much easier.

I knew nothing about this film other than the title but that was enough for me to watch it and I’m beyond happy I gave it a shot. ‘The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared‘ is definitely a mouthful for a title, but it stands out. The film is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by Jonas Jonasson and has become the third highest grossing Swedish film of all time with good reason. Directed by Felix Herngren and starring Robert Gustafsson who, in his own right, is a gifted writer, actor and director of Swedish media, he shares the screen with the acting legends Iwar Wiklander, David Wiberg, Mia Skaringer and Jens Hulten.

Film Review: ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 14th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

MadMax_FR_Comicon_Trailer

It’s a damn shame that every action movie can’t be as good as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘. So many action films will try, but will ultimately fail for a variety of reasons. Pure action filmmaking and movies just don’t get better than this movie. ‘Fury Road‘ is a troubled story to say the least. Original creator George Miller who made the original three ‘Mad Max‘ films had the idea for this fourth installment back in 1998. That’s 17-years ago. This project wasn’t necessarily put on a hold shelf, but a few things had happened to delay the film from being made. From 9-11 to foreign policy, to Mel Gibson’s infamous arrest, there were a variety of things that prevented this movie from seeing the light of day.

When you go to conventions, the last thing you really expect is to really get to have a good conversation with an individual whom you never thought in your entire life you’d ever get an opportunity to speak with. I didn’t think for a second that I would get to speak to him, and it was a “follow your instincts” kind of thing when I asked him to speak with me. William Sadler has a long list of accolades, only a few of which I have been fortunate enough to see. We spoke about a few easily recognizable movies, but my personal favorite is his character in Disturbing Behavior; I’ll have to ask him about that next time I see him. What I appreciated the most was that once he accepted the interview, he personally set up a chair for me to sit in and then sat with me and spoke with me as if I was a real person. Why would I expect otherwise? I really don’t know, but I have to say this was my first real one on one celebrity Interview, Thank You, Mr. Sadler, for taking the time to speak with me and for making it fun.

Working Title Ep. 1 with Gwen and Bryan!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

What can I say? I love movies, television, comics, music, WWE, literature, and video games and that’s not even half of it. I’m fortunate enough to have met some amazing and delightful people since 2007 when I started writing about film. Over the years, I’ve talked about superheroes in print, discussed the many faces of Bruce Campbell, and debated who should star in a remake of ‘Seinfeld‘ on a weekly podcast. Since it’s 2015 and we might see zombies anytime now coming up through the ground, I figured it was as good a time as any to get into the video format, hence this new project called ‘Working Title‘, which is currently our, errmmm working title. This is our first episode where Gwen Reyes from Fresh Fiction TV and myself discuss ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron‘, ‘Far From The Madding Crowd‘, ‘Goodfellas 25th Anniversary’, ‘The Marine 4: Moving Target‘ with Mike ‘The Miz’, and the recent ‘Frank Sinatra‘ collection from Warner Bros. We plan on making this a regular scheduled program with tons of surprises in store. We hope you enjoy.

Film Review: ‘Black Souls’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

MV5BMTc1OTE0MjAzM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTIxODIzMjE@._V1__SX1214_SY854_

I must admit, I’m a sucker for Italian mafia movies. Maybe it’s because part of my family actually hails from Sicily and I’ve heard tons of stories, which I still can’t tell are true or not. The truth is though, we all know that Italy has more than a handful of crime families still operating and doing “business”. Needless to say, there is probably enough material and trues stories to keep making Italian mafia films well into the next century. But I must warn you, if you’re looking for something as violent and fun as ‘The Godfather‘ or ‘Goodfellas‘, this little film called ‘Black Souls‘ might disappoint, however it shouldn’t.

Film Review: ‘Bravetown’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 8th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

bf425bc70d2f7185a39713d7ce7f92ff6c7cff3e

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a troubled, angsty teen gets in trouble and is sent off to live with their dad in middle-of-nowhere, USA. Once there, the teen develops an independent identity, meets a sparkly vampire, and Indian werewolf…ok, that last part might be inaccurate, but you get the idea. Bravetown doesn’t provide anything you haven’t seen in dozens of other movies, what sets it apart, however, is that it manages to rip off its predecessors in the most bland way possible.

FILM REVIEW: ‘THE D TRAIN’!

by Justin Cline on May 7th, 2015

Hi, Justin C., Here…

dtrain

All 80’s comedies are predicated on a lie.

I’m too sick to go to school today.

We found a mouse in this bottle.

Back off, man. I’m a scientist.

The same holds true of the latest Jack Black vehicle, The D Train, but will it take its place amongst these all-time favorites or fade into obscurity by the time you finish reading this review? Read the rest of this entry »

Film Review: ‘Far From the Madding Crowd’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 7th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

farfrom

Thomas Hardy’s 1874 novel ‘Far From The Madding Crowd‘ has gone through many interpretations and adaptations throughout the years. Some of them were good. Some were not so good. It’s been long enough to get a new adaptation of this fascinating novel and its characters, which had one of the first instances of feminism and individuality for women. Director Thomas Vinterberg plays it easy on the feminism aspect here, and instead gives us a woman who we cannot clearly get a read on through most of the film. However, it is clear that she doesn’t need a man in her life, because of her education and wit, which she narrates at the start of the film, but never talks to us again.

Hey guys, Jana here,

78e63c2c1bf8c0d42ff39f1c271504e222e21fdb

Meryl Streep is the most amazing actress. Ever. I know that’s a bold statement, I’ll try to earn some goodwill by noting that Audrey Hepburn is my pick for second best. I’ve never hidden the fact that Streep gives me major lady-wood and I’d buy a ticket to watch her read the phone book. One of my favorite flicks to watch her shine in is ‘Mama Mia‘. I have a major weak spot for musicals and the golden-haired goddess singing and dancing was a natural favorite, so, of course, I have been incredibly excited for ‘Ricki and the Flash‘ since I heard it was announced.

Film Review: ‘Lambert and Stamp’!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 7th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

lambertstamp

We’ve seen our number of music documentaries over the years. We’ve even seen quite a big number of music documentaries concerning the iconic band ‘The Who‘. Showcasing their music, films, and bandmates, I thought there was nothing left to tell about ‘The Who’, but I was wrong. This documentary by James D. Cooper and expertly edited by Christopher Tellefsen, tells a story from a different point of view on ‘The Who‘, specifically from Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, hence the title ‘Lambert & Stamp‘. It’s an excellent and intriguing story of two men from very different backgrounds who were responsible for ‘The Who‘.

Hi everyone, Bryan here…

screen-shot-2015-04-11-at-8-53-37-am

The Griswolds are back and have planned a new vacation. However it won’t feature Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo this time around, although they do make appearances here. This film follows Clark’s son Rusty (Ed Helms) and his wife (Christina Applegate), and their two kids as they embark on a road trip to Wally World. Rusty tells his family that it was the best time in his life and he wants hi own family to experience the fun and adventure of a family cross-country road trip. I guess they aren’t going to Hawaii again.

Hey guys, Jana here,

AAAAAAACAPTAINLONG

We’ve seen comic book movies take our favorite actors and turn them into gods, well not all of them, but it’s always exciting to see who is next to take up the mantle thrown down by Marvel and is capable of living up to the inked character they embody. ‘Captain America: Civil War‘ has just tapped Freeman for an unknown part in the sequel. and hits theaters May 6, 2016.

The Human Centipede 3 (Final Sequence)‘ is, even more villainous, if that was even possible, than it’s predecessors. This time around it’s a prison warden who puts the “human centipede” surgical idea to use. The film opens to limited release at the end of May and into the UK in June.

Syfy is digging their boots into their plans to re-invent themselves in the image of the channel’s origins by going back to offering quality sci-fi programming. More space opera, less sharks in tornadoes, hopefully they continue offering random former TV stars as sacrifice though, that’s entertaining as hell!

‘Jesse’ Needs Your Help!!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 6th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

11193436_477208559094784_7886449775985638724_n

There’s a new short film being made locally in North Texas and it needs your help. The film in question is called ‘Jesse‘ and  is a cerebral film that speaks to the human ability or inability to choose between two paths: one that seems right in the moment and one that takes true restraint to see the bigger picture. The teaser trailer for the film looks great and has me intrigued to see what this crazy movie is all about.

Hey guys, Jana here,

maxresdefault

When I heard that director Cary Fukunaga was directing a retooling of Stephen King’s ‘It‘ for the big screen, I had one question, “Who would play Pennywise?” Sure, there are many parts that were cast really well in the original mini-series event that terrified fans everywhere, and some of my ideas of what is good about it are grounded in the nostalgia of watching the show in middle school and what faces became attached to those memories. Richard Thomas as Bill, Harry Anderson as Richie, and John Ritter as Ben are just a few casting choices that I can’t imagine anyone else taking on and doing justice to what is ingrained in my memory. As much as I loved watching those actors get scared, I loved the guy that filled them with terror and caused Bill’s stutter to run sprints around his face even more, Pennywise,  performed to perfection and immortalized by Tim Curry. The announcement I had been dreading has finally been dropped and Pennywise has been re-cast.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Goodfellas’ 25th Anniversary!

by Gumbercules9000 on May 5th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

goodfellas-25th-600x450

THE FILM

By the time 1990 came around, Martin Scorsese had already made several masterpieces in film, which continue to be praised and talked about to this day. With the likes of ‘Raging Bull‘, ‘Taxi Driver‘, and ‘The Last Waltz‘, we all knew that Scorsese was one of the finest filmmakers and storytellers around. Even with just those three previous films mentioned, you’d know you were in for a treat when Scorsese wanted to show you something. Then 1990 came around and Scorsese once again changed the film community with a movie called ‘Goodfellas‘, which was his big foray into the whole mafia genre.

Joss Whedon comes back to direct the Avengers one more time in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.”  This is undoubtedly the most action packed film to date from the Marvel universe.  From the very first frame, it is nearly two and a half hours of epic battles with your favorite superheroes.  Now, it may be true that some character development screen time has been sacrificed to bring the gloriously orchestrated fighting that graces the screen; however, you have been getting to know these characters for the better part of seven years now.  The public demands to see the Avengers in action, and Whedon serves it up on a silver platter!
