Film Review: ‘Steak (R)evolution’!

Back in 1989, the United States used music as a weapon against Noriega. For several days, the Americans surrounded their enemy and forced them to listen on a loudspeaker to the same songs over and over again. Watching Steak (R)evolution just once was enough to give me sympathy pains for the troops of Noriega. In fact, I imagine this film might just be added to the torture device database.

Film Review: ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

4437523-who-do-you-think-will-die-in-avengers-age-of-ultron_0

To basically start out the summer of 2015 with a big bang, comes the highly anticipated sequel to Marvel’s 2012’s ‘Avengers‘ film, which is titled ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron‘. It’s been a long time coming too. Ever since 2008, when we saw Robert Downey Jr. put on the Iron Man suit for the first time, we all knew Marvel Entertainment had a huge franchise on their hands, as they teased a big film called ‘The Avengers‘, which put a lot of our favorite superheroes together to fight evil. After several solo movies with the likes of Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man, we finally got an ‘Avengers‘ movie in 2012, which made over $1 billion for Marvel and Disney, and was met with much praise and critical success. It was because of this, that Marvel has announced tons of superhero films through the year 2019 that will play into their overall story arc they have been building since 2008. We’ve all been anxiously awaiting this sequel for quite some time now, with tons of posters and trailers that have more than elevated our calm levels with excitement. Now the time is finally here for another hefty dose of ‘Avengers‘ with each superhero returning along with Joss Whedon directing.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

the-age-of-adaline-blake-lively-michiel-huisman-600x399

It’s rare these days where we get a genuine romantic film with a big science-fiction aspect. You either get one or the other and seldom do the two ever mix. That’s not the case with ‘Age of Adaline‘ though. Writers J. Mills Goodloe and Salvadore Paskowitz have brilliantly weaved both genres into a cohesive narrative with strong characters and an easy enough plot without having to explaining the sci-fi aspects throughout the film. In fact, the first several minutes of the movie has a narrator explain why this young woman in the early 1900s named Adaline (Blake Lively) has not aged past her mid-20s.

He’s everywhere and it’s glorious. Most everyone is familiar with the game ‘Grand Theft Auto‘. It encourages the player to immerse themselves into a fantasy, criminal underworld where jacking cars is a necessity and shooting rival gangsters, cops, or prostitutes is fair game. When you have a game that envelops that kind of violence, it naturally draws opposition. That opposing voice comes from parents being concerned about the content their children are absorbing, it comes from politicians pandering to the voters while touting negative values as a direct result of exposure to GTA. Each of those voices has one thing in common, their desire to ban the game.

Hey guys, Jana here,

galaxyquest

Was there a better spoof comedy in 1999 than ‘Galaxy Quest‘? I’m gonna go ahead and say there wasn’t and Quest was the greatest thing since ‘Spaceballs‘. As far as space spoofs go, it was killer and it helped that Tim Allen starred. In the 90’s I was addicted to ‘Home Improvement‘ and couldn’t get enough of the comedian. I actually read both of his books and watched every show in syndication so many times that I could quote them in my sleep. by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 19th, 2015

Beka P., Here…

Justice is a strange thing sometimes. In an ideal world, all the guilty people would be punished appropriately, and all the innocent people would go free. But in a system that is controlled by human beings that’s not always the case. The Guy With The Knife is not a story of an innocent man being wrongfully convicted, so don’t write it off as a topic that’s been over done. It’s also a look into the Texas parole system, which can be terribly complicated and confusing. This film, created and directed by Alison Armstrong highlights the issue of inappropriate punishment and the role the media and outside influence can play on the inside players.

Film Review: DIFF 2015 Shorts!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 19th, 2015

Beka P., Here…

sweep

Sweep

This short film revolves around an accidental meeting between three men at a recycling center. A white guy, who seems pretty fed up with his life, sits inside of his truck smoking marijuana before unloading his truck. The two black men who happen to be unloading their truck at the same time strike up a conversation, and a weird, somewhat strained and yet also oddly friendly encounter follows. In the short time they spend together they are able to see that despite their differences the experience they are currently sharing is pretty great. A fourth and unwelcome man comes into the scene and the dynamics totally shift. Does their new friendship hold up or does it all come crumbling down?

2.5 out of 5 stars

cutaway

Cutaway

This film may be above me, perhaps I missed the point, or maybe I just didn’t see the beauty in it… but I felt like Cutaway was seven minutes that I could have spent somewhere else. This is an almost silent short, told through a series of up close images or actions. It tells the story of a guy who is going to a couple of appointments with a female in his life who has become pregnant and the backstory to what he’s going through in his own life.  I can see that this film has a deeper meaning, I just felt like the way it was shot was hard for me to focus on.

1 out of 5 stars

lovemetinder

Love Me Tinder

A much older woman meets a much younger man via the online dating app, Tinder. What makes this short relatable is not that this situation is actually happening often, but that the feelings behind it and the desperation behind the meeting seems to be what keeps people using Tinder like a drug. The man and woman, although really different, just want to have a connection. Their awkward evening filled with music, drinks and a very strange spooning session on her bed seem unrealistic. But the end of the film and the two’s private reactions to the evening are very raw and all too real.

3 out of 5 stars

oasis

Oasis

This short starts out slow but once it picks up speed it has you on the edge of your seat until the very end. After the death of her husband, a woman takes over the role of maintenance man in an apartment building, despite the resistance of the head stupor. The woman soon discovers that the men of the building have a secret and they will do anything to keep it from coming out.

4 out of 5 stars

adjustadream

Adjust-A-Dream

Shopping for a mattress has never been so tense. A gay couple embarks on a journey to find the perfect mattress before moving in together. It’s a modern day Goldilocks as they try beds that are too soft or too hard… and yet in the end, the mattresses weren’t the problem. As the two explore relationship issues, they come to find the one that’s just right.

3.5 out of 5 stars

melville

Melville

This short was the clear stand out in this compilation. Marcus Melville is starting a family and running a business, but he’s just been given some pretty bad personal news. He can’t seem to bring himself to talk about it with anyone- not his wife, not his mom, not his friends. Marcus Melville used to be quite a big deal in the rap scene, and when all else fails… get back to your roots. This innovative short had the audience saying “wow.”

4.5 out of 5 stars

pinkgrapefruit

Pink Grapefruit

In this short a young married couple attempts to set up two of their friends at a weekend getaway. It seems like the couple never intends for this matchmaking to stick, but rather just to have some entertainment for the weekend. Their plan doesn’t exactly work and the weekend takes on a life of its own.

3 out of 5 stars

thelittledeputy

The Little Deputy

Trevor Anderson directs and stars in this short that attempts to rewrite the past. When Trevor was young he took an old timey photo with his father at the mall. Trevor didn’t really feel like the photo was the best depiction of himself, and that maybe there was a way the photo could have been done better. This film attempts to go back in time and take the photo that should have been.

Monkeys, Tina Fey, and a series of calamitous frolicking couldn’t be anything, but a delightful time.  Disneynature’s Monkey Kingdom follows Maya, a lowborn female monkey, through her journey to challenge the caste system.  The highborn, The Sisterhood (Queens), three female monkeys with red splattered faces, is given the best food, lodging, grooming, obedience, and fear.  Slightly lower than The Queens is Raja, the highest born alpha male monkey.  Far underneath The Queens and Raja and still other levels of lieutenants and random monkeys is sweet Maya.  Like any human would, Maya endeavors to make a better life for herself and was fearless in her pursuit of it.

Film Review: ‘Unfriended’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 17th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

Unfriended1

I wanted to be scared, I really did. I hoped for the best, because ‘Unfriended‘ actually received some decent reviews. From the moment I sat down, I was uninterested. Ten minutes into the film, I’m already hoping Blaire (Shelley Henning) and her boyfriend Mitch (Moses Storm) meet a gruesome end. There is nothing remotely genuine about either one of them and they are constantly stating to each other and us that they are “good people.”

by Gumbercules9000 on Apr 15th, 2015

Claire S., Here…

ladygrey

Ladygrey is a film adapted by Alain Choquart and Laurence Coriat based on two novels by Hubert Mingarelli. This film is about a small rural town (named Ladygrey) in South Africa, ten years after apartheid.   Despite a brutal history of race-related murders, of which bodies have never been found,  the community has progressed in autopilot, trying to ignore their past and disregard their resentment and anger.  This is the only way they have managed to co-exist. But now, a turn of events threatens to unmask their true feelings and tear-down the tenuous balance that has maintained peace.

The idea of white supremacists attempting to take over a town seems like it would be fiction, but it’s all too real to the people of Leith, North Dakota. Welcome to Leith is an unnerving documentary, directed by Michael Beach Nichols and Christopher K. His intentions, although unknown at the outset, seem to envelope the townspeople both literally and figuratively.

I wasn’t quite sure of what to expect from ‘The Wolfpack‘. I went in only know a thing or two about this documentary, but what I got was so much more. Some of us turn to reading as a form of escapism and happiness where others might turn to religion, or nature. For me, it was always music and movies. After a hard day of work or school, I knew I could always come home and listen to a good record or watch a film and be totally content. It’s almost like being at home whenever I watch a movie or listen to music, no matter where I am.

There are a lot of good movies out there. Hell, there are even some damn near perfect ones, but there are only a small handful of films that fall into the legendary category. These films that have become legend only come around once in a blue moon, but when they do, they tend to hit an emotional cord and stick around forever. I’m sure we can talk for days about what movies fall into this category, but there is one film in particular that definitely belongs here, and I’m willing to bet dollars to donuts that you’ve never even heard of it, nor seen it. I’ve always wondered what it would be like if someone made a movie that combined ‘Mad Max‘ with some of my favorite 80s and 90s movies. Fortunately for myself and all of you, somebody did. Well, not somebody, but three people named Francois Simard, Anouk Whissell, and Yoann-Karl Whissell all wrote and directed this bloody fun masterpiece called ‘Turbo Kid‘. This is the kind of movie that would have been the “Holy Grail” from me growing up, because it has just about every element I would want in a movie including BMX bikes, super powers, robots, a post apocalyptic background, a John Carpenter-style score, violence, adventure, arm wrestling, and buckets of blood.

Janet W., Here…

home-page-feature-image-front-main-stage-2

Real love is seldom portrayed in film.  Two people meet, they fall in love and would do anything for each other.  Love is not flowers day in and day out.  Love is as much about sacrifice as it is about fulfillment.  Love worth having must be earned, pursued, and above all respected.  Not since The Fault in Our Stars had I witnessed such a true example of love.  Not without flaw, but the closest of late, is The Longest Ride.  This film does “real love” justice.

‘Gremlins’ Will Undergo A Remake!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Apr 9th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Gizmo

Up next for the remake film treatment is one of my childhood favorites, ‘Gremlins‘. I grew up loving Gremlins, they start out absolutely adorable, but just like any horror movie from the 80’s there’s a strict set of rules you have to follow to survive. Instead of not having sex, you can’t get the precious Mogwai wet or you will likely die. In a horror movie you don’t split away from your group, but in ‘Gremlins‘ you can’t feed them after midnight, or you will likely die. I wonder if there’s a parallel universe and movies are the Mogwai, if you get them wet, they replicate a bad copy of the original, I’d say that’s the cause for the remake-hell we are living through.
