Film Review: ‘Woman in Gold’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 31st, 2015

Janet W., Here…

WOMAN IN GOLD

The Piano.  Schindler’s List. I have seen films about the Holocaust and the invasion of countries by the Nazi regime.  Along comes Woman in Gold a true story about one woman’s fight against Nazi-sympathizing Austria.  Mrs. Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren) loses her sister and within her sister’s belongings finds a postcard of Gustav Klimt’sWoman in Gold” painting.  Shortly after this find, Austria announces their intent to restore stolen artwork to their rightful owners namely the Jewish families who were robbed by the Nazis when they invaded Austria.  Randy (Ryan Reynolds) is a down on his luck attorney who failed at his solo practice.

Hey guys, Jana here,

mulan

Walt Disney Pictures has selected the next story up for the live-action remake with ‘Mulan‘. The company has been hell bent on taking successful animated stories, blowing up the fantasy worlds they live in, including the already larger-than-life villains, then dropping the wide-eyed hero into the setting and let the story unfold. This is a pretty cool idea, however Disney has yet to pull a live-action crossover out of their hat that was better than it’s animated mirror.  Read the rest of this entry »

NBC is attempting to bring a live musical to the airwaves, yet again. ‘The Sound of Music‘ brought in a singing heavyweight with the wide-eyed Carrie Underwood as Maria, then they attempted a second musical with the absolute shit-show that was ‘Peter Pan‘. Seriously Christopher Walken as a singing Captain Hook? Did no one pay attention to the screen-test?! Next for the peacock is ‘The Wiz‘.

Film Review: ‘The Hunting Ground’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 27th, 2015

Fernando M., Here…

thehuntingground

The Hunting Ground” is a documentary film shedding light on a situation that nobody wants to talk about.  Rape.  Specifically, it explores the constant issue that campus rape has been for decades.  From the initial frames of the film, the viewer is treated to a stark contrast of college reality that brings an immense dread that does not let up.  This film is heartbreaking, painful, a bit circumstantial, but also hopeful.

THE FILM

We are at the end of this ‘Hobbit‘ trilogy with ‘The Battle of the Five Armies‘. The last three years seem to have gone by fairly fast. It seems like yesterday when I was writing about Warner Bros. heading back to Middle Earth with the ‘Hobbit‘. I was super stoked about it, because I was such a huge fan of the ‘Lord of the Rings‘ trilogy. I think I saw each of those films five times in the theater, owned each version that came out on DVD and Blu-ray, and went back to see them when they were re-released. I just can’t get enough of the ‘LOTR‘ films. But shortly after the announcement that we were receiving a ‘Hobbit‘ film, things started going downhill.

Film Review: ‘Get Hard’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 26th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

get-hard-hart-ferrell-2

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart have teamed up together for their latest comedy project called ‘Get Hard‘ with enough double entendres for two movies. There are a couple of similarities from ‘Trading Places‘ and ‘Nothing To Lose‘ here in ‘Get Hard‘, but nothing really seems genuine or charming enough to remember this film much beyond two minutes after viewing it. Etan Cohen (not to be confused of the Coen Bros.) steps into the director’s seat for the first time, but has written screenplays such as ‘Men In Black III‘, ‘Tropic Thunder‘, and ‘Idiocracy‘. Clearly, he has some writing talent, but with ‘Get Hard‘, it seems like he just let Ferrell and Hart do their own thing, which can be outrageously funny at times, but can also run off on long tangents, which often happens with this movie.

I was hoping there would be a day that we got to see Arnold Schwarzenegger take on zombies. Fortunately, that day has finally come with a movie called ‘Maggie‘ that actually looks quite good. Directed by Henry Hobson, the story follows Arnold Schwarzenegger setting out to protect his infected daughter (Abigail Breslin) when a zombie epidemic is threatening the world. It looks to be a refreshingly small-scale, compelling drama with the zombie aspect simply a backdrop, and we’ll find out soon if that’s the case. Also starring Joely Richardson, Laura Cayouette, and Dana Gourrier. You can mark Abigail Breslin down for two zombie movies the now, the first being ‘Zombieland‘.  I can’t wait to see this. The film will debut on May 8th of this year. Enjoy the trailer.

John Woo is Remaking ‘Manhunt’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 19th, 2015

HI everyone, Bryan Here…

John-Woo-director-of-Miss-001

We haven’t seen much of director John Woo (‘Face/Off‘, ‘Mission Impossible II‘) for a while now. Sure, he made ‘Red Cliff‘ a few years ago, but the last time Woo did something anyone would recognize was back in 2003 with the movie ‘Paycheck‘ that starred Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman. Well it seems now that Woo will remake ‘Manhunt’, based on the novel by Juko Nishimura.

UFC 185: ‘Dethroning in Dallas’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 17th, 2015

Gadi E., Here…

Screen Shot 2015-03-17 at 5.01.40 PM

This past Saturday night Dallas witnessed a real rarity in UFC cards as not 1, but 2 champions lost their titles.  It’s been six years since that feat has happened.  A packed American Airlines Center was already hyped but a stacked line-up of fights.  The UFC may have Dana White as the face of it’s organization, but one of the real masterminds is matchmaker Joe Silva.  His ability to create lively lineups has translated to a slew of successful shows.  There are always duds along the way, but even the pre-lims on Saturday night had some exciting moments.  Dallas’ own Ryan Benoit got things heated with a shocking 2nd round KO of Sergio Pettis.   Sergio had dominated the first round but a timely hook by the feisty “BabyFace” Benoit led to a full barrage of haymakers before the ref broke up the beating.  Benoit’s emotions got the better of him as he cheekily kicked Pettis in the butt moments after the ref ended the fight.  The reply on the overhead big screen caused a stir of boos and unleashed a wild twitter attack on Benoit.  His apology quelled the situation and allowed for the great fight card to keep chugging along nicely.

Hey guys, Jana here,

beauty

We’ve all heard the story, a tale as old as time…Our heroine Belle, sacrifices her freedom to trade places with her father living in an enchanted castle with a horridly monstrous beast that embodies the stuff nightmares are made of. She holds the key to his ultimate salvation and the others living in the castle nudge the pair together in hopes the end of their enchantment will be realized. I grew up on the Disney animated feature and it’s remained one of my top 3 toon-movies even now.

The weekly show is enjoying success in it’s third season and has set a positive precedent that A&E is eager to replicate, and like BM the network has chosen another horror movie to base the show on, ‘Let The Right One In‘.

Run-Down of Planet Comicon in Kansas City!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 16th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

This weekend held a pretty great event, no I’m not talking about the most epic Pi day to end all Pi days, but the Kansas City Planet Comicon!!! Celebrities, creators and throngs of fans made the trip to KC to revel in the glory that is and will always be a celebration of all things pop culture and all things très geek. Celebrity guests consisted of Cary Elwes (‘The Princess Bride‘), Michael Rooker (‘The Walking Dead‘), Karen Gillan (‘Doctor Who‘), Stephen Amell (‘Arrow‘) and Scott Wilson (‘The Walking Dead‘) among many others and was a serious draw for fans. Not everyone goes to a con just to see celebs, others view it as a networking event, a place to share their craft or just as a reason to go all out with the cosplay and know they will be among others doing the same. Whatever the reason, fans congregated en masse at Bartle Hall for the weekend.

Top 10 Soundtracks We Want To See Released on Vinyl!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

say-anything

Many of you might already know that I love listening to movie soundtracks. I always have. Since I was a little tyke who could barely see over a counter, I was infatuated with movie scores and soundtracks, particularly the ‘E.T.‘ original motion picture score and the ‘Beverly Hill Cop‘ soundtrack. From there, my love and passion grew for all types of music. My parents had a pretty good record collection that included all three original ‘Star Wars’ albums, ‘The Wizard of Oz‘, and ‘Star Trek I and II’ to just name a few. Throughout the years, I now have a fun record collection that spans all genres of music from Frank Zappa to Rage Against the Machine, from R.L. Burnside to The Pixies, and so on. Along the way, digging through the dirty stacks of crates at local record shops and estate sales, I became hell bent on having one of the best Soundtrack collections. And over the past several years, I’ve been lucky enough to acquire some very sought after albums. But there are still so many soundtracks that have never found their way to vinyl, either commercially or ever really. So here is a list in the hopes that maybe Varèse Sarabande, Mondo, or Death Waltz will consider releasing these albums in the near future.

Here is Ben’s Review of ‘It Follows’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2015

Ben K., Here…

it-follows-cannes-2014-4

It’s not every day one can say they witnessed a unique premise in a horror film. Fresh ideas are rare in this genre of dumb character decisions, “jump out” scares, and people falling down for no reason. With It Follows, writer/director David Robert Mitchell actually begins with the common horror trope of teenagers being punished for having sex, but then he spins it into something brilliantly horrifying.

Janet W., Here…

Run All Night Movie (2)

Darkness gives way to a misty lake.  From above we close in on an injured man sprawled out on the ground.  Jimmy is floating in and out of consciousness…a voiceover speaks on what goes through the mind of the near dead and suddenly he hears a gunshot, a curious opening and introduction of Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson).  Jimmy is a former mob hit man that has become an island to himself through his long history of foul play.  Estranged from Jimmy is his only child, Mike Conlon (Joel Kinnaman).  Mike is a husband, father, and big brother/boxing coach, respectable personas that Jimmy forsook long ago.  Finding himself caught in the web of a murderous cokehead, Danny Maguire (Boyd Holbrook), and his mob boss father, Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris), Mike turns to the last person he ever wanted to rely on, Jimmy.  Run All Night takes the viewer on a crossing of evading death and the bonding of two hearts.

Film Review: ‘Cinderella’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 12th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

CINDERELLA

I’m not sure why Disney is hell-bent on remaking all of their classic animated films into live-action reboots, but that seems to be the case nowadays. With ‘Snow White and The Huntsman‘ to ‘Maleficent‘ and now with ‘Cinderella‘, Disney is banking on popular movie stars to re-energize their classic titles. The problem is that these are not any good. While there is probably a built in audience already and new generations are now getting to see these old tales, it might be financially viable to think about rebooting these franchises. But in order to do that, you must make something that is quality, which none of these are.

Film Review: ‘It Follows’!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

maxresdefault

It’s very rare these days that a horror movie consistently delivers on genuine thrills and scares. And I’m not talking so much about the cheap “jump out and scare you tactics”. I’m talking about a deep psychological horror that lingers in your mind for days after, causing you to look over your shoulder and think twice about those strange noises you heard. Not since ‘The Babadook‘ has a movie been more terrifying than ‘It Follows‘, which is a horror film from newcomer David Robert Mitchell who wrote and directed this masterpiece of horror.

Paul N., Here…

When a director makes the conscious choice to set his or her film within the confines of a single location, they make the conscious choice to sacrifice certain key elements of cinema. It’s a high risk, high reward choice that has left more than a few filmmakers burned. A lack of setting and plot must be replaced with compelling conflict and character. The audience has no stimulation for the eye, so the imagination must be entertained with vivid description and compelling acting.
