Hey guys, Jana here,

adventure_time

In 2010, Cartoon Network launched what would become one of their most popular shows ever, ‘Adventure Time’ and is currently in it’s 7th season.  Most of us are familiar with Finn, his dog, Jake, and the Ice King and Princess Bubblegum and, as the name suggests, their adventures in the Land of Ooo.

Hey guys, Jana here,
befunky_artwork.jpg

Madonna may have lived in a ‘Material World‘ but we’re living in the Super World and I am a Super Girl. That didn’t quite come off as I envisioned it, but I stand by it. In the vast sea of superhero-saturated projects comes one that’s just a little different. When it comes to super-entertainment we’re inundated with dozens of feature films and TV programs, not to mention the comic books that started everything are still being changed up and churned out by the thousands. This time TV is giving us a little something different by gathering some fan-favorite recurring characters and combining them into one series!

The next remake out of Hollywood will be ‘Brewster’s Millions‘. Richard Pryor and John Candy starred in the original film in 1985, which was based on George Barr McCutcheon’s book from 1902. The remake will focus on Monty Brewster, who will inherit $1 billion dollars. He’ll fully inherit the money if he spends $100 million in one week. If he doesn’t, he’ll go back to normal life.

HC 3 - Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi Fabrizio Gifuni

What do a hit-and-run, a risky business venture, and several unlikely romantic pairings all have in common? They are each part of a masterfully interlocking plot that hints at the motives and aspirations of the characters behind them, as well as the far-reaching consequences of the daily choices people make.

Film Review: The Last Five Years’!

Paul N., Here…

The Last 5 Years Movie

If you like musicals, chances are you’ve already heard of, watched, and bought the t-shirt to Jason Robert Brown’s The Last 5 Years.  Tony award winning composer and lyricist Brown has created what amounts to a musical glimpse of a budding relationship as it grows from infatuation, to marriage, to an eventual end. Due to the unique nature of the film’s construction, the previous sentence is in no way a spoiler.

Suzanne L., Here…

Screenshot 2015-02-26 17.06.29

Perhaps it’s just me, but it doesn’t seem like directors often follow an acclaimed documentary with a horror film. David Gelb, the director of Jiro Dreams of Sushi, did just that when taking on The Lazarus Effect, a movie by horror production company Blumhouse. With a talented cast and new take on the Frankenstein’s monster trope, Gelb creates a movie with genuine scares that missed an opportunity to delve into larger issues.

Film Review: ‘Focus’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 26th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Focus-2015-Movie

The art of deception and the big con job are at the center of ‘Focus‘, which is a very sleek film full of charm, wit, and a giant basket of twists and turns that will have you yelling in your seat. There isn’t anything relatively new or fresh here in the form of changing the game or genre of the ‘con-artist’ film, but with Will Smith and Margot Robbie’s performances and the luxurious and glossy look this film has, this deceptive film has a place of its own with the rest of the fun thief movies we’ve seen. Whether it be ‘Ocean’s 11‘, ‘Confidence‘, or even ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels‘, you can bet that you won’t see at least a few cons running full force at you.

Disney has done it again, they’ve taken a popular musical and put it on screen. There are all kinds of takes on how well the film did, the casting choices and even the songs (Hello? Didn’t anyone see the original show before?), not to mention the flack over the prolific double entendres uttered by Johnny Depp’s Big Bad Wolf to Lilla Crawford’s Red Riding Hood, once again, did you NOT see the original people? The Duff opens with a voice-over introduction by the female lead, Bianca (Mae Whitman), to the stereotypes of high school in true John Tucker Must Die or Breakfast Club style.  Special effects are used to present labels of the different types (tough girl, etc.).  With nearly the same shot composition of Jawbreaker and Juno, we see close-ups of beautiful girls as the narrator announces their qualities and then a quick admission that she was not either of them.  Enter the scary nemesis, Madison (Bella Thorne) just like Not Another Teen Movie and She’s All That.  So many other teenybopper films came to mind as I watched The Duff

With the success of the ‘Hot Tub Time Machine‘, both critically and financially, it made sense to make a sequel. Well that time has come and original director and writer Steve Pink and Josh Heald have conjured up more or less a similar story, but this time with more gross out humor and less 80’s pop culture references. Instead of going back in time, the gang minus John Cusack jumps in the tub and end up in the year 2025 in New Orleans, where it looks more like 2015 with the exception of pets flying on hover boards and automobiles acting like humans.

Fifty Shades of Grey is fifty shades of annoying.  Opening with a clear comparison of Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) in the manner that they start their day.  Grey is precise and disciplined while Steele is clumsy and frumpy.  Because of her sick college roommate, Kate (Eloise Mumford), Steele is tasked with interviewing Grey.  Grey will be the commencement speaker for their college graduation ceremony.  Ms. Nervous Knots is clearly out of her league and this intrigues Grey.  This film is nearly a point-by-point attempt at a re-vamping Wild Orchid (1989) with a more screwed up and twisted James Wheeler (Mickey Rourke) and more dingy and childish Emily Reed (Carré Otis).  Don’t get excited, because it is not Wild Orchid. Touch is a major deal-breaker/game-changer in both films.

Hello ladies! Look at your man, now back to me – whoops, sorry about that. As you know, it’s Valentine’s Day once again. And as this overly-commercialized excuse for a holiday rears its ugly head, we take a reflective look back at our lives and at the choices we’ve made concerning our relationships. Some of you will realize that maybe the gap-toothed ex-con biker named “Bubba” might not have been the best choice for a mate (“but he’s a real sweetheart once you get to know him!”). Unfortunately, now you’re “in like Flynn” with his whole clique, and before you know it, you’re drinking homemade moonshine with the rest of his recently released buddies in the middle of backwoods nowhere (if you hear banjos – run). That isn’t to say that everyone makes bad decisions. Some women seem to have a gift for finding the right people to surround themselves with – or have a real knack for how to handle the bad apples that come along – and that can make all the difference between a smooth sailing adventure and a total train wreck experience.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

crumbs-ethiopian-movie

This trailer is super creepy, but also looks fantastic and right up my alley. This little film called ‘Crumbs‘ is directed by Miguel Llanso and is being billed as the first Ethiopian post-apocalyptic, sci-fi feature length movie. It looks crazy. It only runs 69 minutes, which is very short and looks like it follows a guy named Birdy who journeys across a post-apocalyptic landscape and encounters some insane things.

I can’t believe April is almost here again. It just seemed like two weeks ago we were knee deep in 2014’s Dallas Film Festival, which had some excellent films showcased. But that time of the year is just about to begin and the good folks over at the Dallas Film Festival have announced the first 10 films that will show at the festival. Also, it looks like the fest will be honoring the excellent filmmaker John Landis as well, which is all sorts of cool.

Film Review: ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 12th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

kingsman-the-secret-service-taron-egerton-colin-firth

I can officially say that the first AWESOME, kick-ass movie of 2015 is finally here, which is ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service‘. Based on Mark Millar’s (Kick-Ass) comic book, director Matthew Vaughn (Kick-Ass, Layer Cake, Snatch) has once again delivered the goods and high entertainment value with an homage to spy films, particularly the ‘James Bond‘ franchise. So what’s that mean? It means the guy who made ‘Kick-Ass‘ and produced ‘Snatch‘, made his own version of ‘James Bond‘, and it’s as violent and gory and funny as his other films I mentioned.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Game of Thrones’ Season 4!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 11th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

81RxNlfsCGL._SL1500_

THE SERIES

I believe that George R.R. Martin was put on this Earth to entertain and piss off the millions and millions of fans of his work, specifically ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘, or as we have come to know it ‘Game of Thrones‘. If you’ve read the books, you knew what was coming in this fourth season of ‘Game of Thrones‘ on HBO, but for most of you, I’d imagine you were quite shocked, which is of course, nothing new in the world of Westeros. With shows like ‘Game of Thrones‘ and AMC’sThe Walking Dead‘, these creators, writers, and showrunners have perfectly crafted a story full of death, betrayal, and blood.

Yes, Judd Apatow is back in the director’s seat again, this time with the beautiful comedienne Amy Schumer in the lead role. Apatow has really evolved as a filmmaker since ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin‘ in telling better and more personal stories of relationships, but still having those hilarious dick jokes and gross-out gags to make us belly laugh.

Blu-ray Review: ‘101 Dalmatians’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 10th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

61LcbbHAp-L

THE FILM

If it weren’t for ‘101 Dalmatians‘, we might not have had any more Disney animated films, including ‘The Lion King‘ or even ‘Wreck it Ralph‘. Back in 1959, ‘Sleeping Beauty‘ failed to live up to expectations and didn’t make enough money for Disney to do another project. In fact, it got so bad at Disney, that people were being let go and the studio doors were on the verge of being shut for good. Can you imagine that? No more Disney animated films after 1959? I know I can’t.

Comic Con: Dallas Fan Days 2015!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 9th, 2015

Hillary T., Here…

cc011

As a fangirl, I love comics and dressing up. I love being someone else for one day and let’s not lie, Comic Con is my mother ship. This weekend was no exception. I spent two days basking the glory and adoration that was formerly Sci-Fi Expo and is now Fan Days 2.0! It’s my family, and walking through the doors of the Irving Convention Center is always like being at home. It is very much like a space ship or the Sandcrawler from ‘Star Wars’, with its four levels, an over powering awning, and yet, when the parking attendant took mine and Taylor’s (lead camera) money, we were excited and ready to get out of the car and start mingling with everyone and see what Fan Days 2015 had to offer. I decided to go ahead and dress up, because hey, who doesn’t like it when press looks like someone else? My costume of choice? Totally obscure and amazing! I was ready to go as Special Agent Dale Cooper, from Twin Peaks. I even brought along a thermos of “Damn fine coffee,” and a bag of donuts. Dead Laura Palmer would be waiting for me at the convention, for sure!

Hey guys, Jana here,

Neighbors1

In what I personally declared one of the absolute worst movies of 2014, ‘Neighbors‘ stars Seth Rogen and Zac Efron turned in some fairly uninspired performances. I generally like the two actors, especially Zac Efron in ‘The Paperboy‘, so I want to say it was the abysmal story line that limited their range. It wasn’t a huge laugher in my book, but still went on to become the highest grossing comedy of the 2014 year. I can only hope it’s because everyone wanted to laugh, maybe they did – maybe they didn’t, but that’s not a good enough reason to stop Universal Pictures from announcing a sequel.
