Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

mad-men-tca-2015

Podcast #52 is here, which means an official year for this weekly podcast. However, it’s been longer than a year. There have been a fair amount of weeks off, vacations, injury stoppages, two minute warnings, and some what have yous.  Our own Gwen Reyes from FreshFictionTv was finally back in town after covering the TCA (Television Critic’s Association) Conference in Los Angeles for three weeks. She had tons of stories, met tons of filmmakers and actors, and had lots of snacks. Her stories were a lot fun. After the TCA business, we discuss the 2000 film ‘Boondock Saints‘ in a new segment we call “What If”, where we give you some fun trivia about the film and give a scenario of ‘What If’ ‘Boondock Saints’ would have had different actors, a different rating, or a different director. It was a lot of fun.  We had Gadi Elkon from SeligFilmNews , Adam Conway from Angelika Film Center, and Andrew Conway. It was a lot of fun to say the least. And please let us know what you think by going to our FACEBOOK page and TWITTER page, which you should visit to catch up on all the latest information. And don’t forget to visit iTunes and Stitcher to subscribe to our podcast. Enjoy the show and see you next week! Thank you for listening.

Top 10 Horribly Cheesy Scenes in Otherwise Decent Movies!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 30th, 2015

Paul N., Here…

DirtyDancing3-lg

I am not claiming that all of the following movies are cinematic works of art. Some of these films might be considered mediocre at best. However, they do all have one thing in common; all of them suffer from having that one scene that takes audiences out of the moment and makes them groan in disbelief.  This list includes movies that were meant to be taken seriously. So over-the-top comedies and machismo action flicks will not be found as they are created with the intent of being ridiculous.

A family has a mother, father, and maybe children, a standard definition of a family.  A family is a group of people who are related to each other, yet another definition.  Nowhere in either definition is a mention of color, right?  Since the beginning of time families have blended nationality, ethnicity, and race.  This fact doesn’t make the families any less bound.

Stieg Larsson is best known for his literary creation of troubled and resourceful badass Lisbeth Salander in 2005. The books took the world by storm spawning global interest and feature film adaptations. Larsson passed away in 2004 after finishing a trilogy of titles ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘, ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire‘ and ‘The Girl That Kicked The Hornet’s Nest‘. Most of us would have given up on the hope of any further novels, but David Lagercrantz has taken over Salander’s future and is giving us another sequel.

Hey guys, Jana here,

american-sniper-6

In the world of film, there are specific genres that stand out for me and one of those is war movies. I love different titles for a variety of reasons, the story, or even an actor, in this category there is one primary theme that ties each film together – heroes. Their outstanding courage is what gives us that lump in our throats and a swell of patriotic pride that causes us to lift these characters, real or imagined, to elevated heights. It takes a special kind of person to be a hero, I know I couldn’t do it, but I am eternally grateful for the men and women that take up that mantle and defend the lives and freedoms I hold so dearly.

I love comic books, really I do, but the entertainment world is killing them! Today’s kids probably don’t even realize there were these papers covered in bright colors that told a story through word bubbles and POW’s and ZAP’s, we called them comic books. We used to pick them up and read a story about our favorite supes. Why would anyone pick up a comic book when they can just pull out the movie or series about that hero? Film Review: ‘Two Days One Night’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 22nd, 2015

Paul N., Here…

two-days-one-night-cannes-2014-5

The phrase “train wreck” is tossed around a lot. People love to watch train wrecks in their many forms. This might explain the onslaught of reality television shows that permeate the airwaves. However, these shows are often short lived as people slowly learn the sad truth. The Hollywood version of a train wreck is a fun roller coaster ride with many ups and downs, often resulting in a happy ending. A realistic train wreck, however, is as disturbing to watch as one might expect. Directors who attempt to go down this path must navigate that precarious line to not delve too deep in that grim realism, and instead . Two Days, One Night is certainly not a train wreck of a movie, however, it suffers from a pretty blatant identity crisis due to its shallow glimpse into much deeper ideas.

Could Kaya Scodelario Be Heading To The High Seas?!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 22nd, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

Kaya-Scodelario

There are some film franchises that can continue churning out hit after hit after hit. ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ isn’t that franchise anymore. The first film, was epic, grand and sweeping and everyone got caught up in the timeless nature of the story, the romanticism of running away with a pirate and pirates being pirates who will do anything they must to achieve their goals. The second film came and I was even more intrigued because this time there was the whole mystique of Davy Jones thrown into the beautiful mix. Then the third…and the fourth…..and now a fifth. I’m pirated out. It’s over, man the rowboats, search for survivors and head for shore. Alas, Disney won’t listen to me, much like Marvel doesn’t listen to me either. If crowds love it and swarm to it, it’s easy to get greedy and kick out film after film with the only goal being to capitalize on the current hot trend. It IS possible to have too much of a good thing! If I can actually have too much bacon to the point where I’m giving it away, it’s possible to have too many frakking pirate movies!

Film Review: ‘Black Sea’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

4075_D022_00093_R.jpg

Jude Law in a submarine movie, you say? Why yes please. I had only hoped that we would get Jude Law playing ‘Dom Hemingway‘ again here, talking about his private parts in such a way that it seems poetic, but unfortunately that’s not the case with his character or this film, titled ‘Black Sea‘. Director Kevin Macdonald has an impressive resume for sure, with films like ‘Marley‘ and ‘The Last King of Scotland‘ under his belt. Where those award winning films might have shown us something more on a serious level whether it be about a historical figure or brilliant musician, ‘Black Sea‘ tends to journey into the ludicrous realm on am adult ‘Hardy Boys‘ type of quest.

Film Review: ‘Cake’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

cake-toronto-film-festival

At first glance, you’d think ‘Cake‘ is just another romantic comedy film starring the beautiful and talented Jennifer Aniston, but then you’d be very wrong. This utterly depressing yet beautiful film shows just how much range Aniston has on screen, as she’s not her usual comical self here. Directed by Daniel Barnz (‘Beastly‘) and written by Patrick Tobin (this is really his only screen credit), ‘Cake‘ is a moving and honest look at a broken woman who is trying to pull the pieces of her life together. It’s one flaw is in its screenplay, which tends to play on a smaller emotional level than the tearjerker it obviously wants to be.

Film Review: ‘A Most Violent Year’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 21st, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

amvy_day6-219.CR2

By the title alone, you’d think this was in fact ‘A Most Violent Year‘ or a very violent movie. However, that is not exactly the case here. In fact, it’s far from it. J.C. Chandor’s screenplay and film is a very slow burn that tells a story of the seedy underbelly of competing heating oil suppliers in 1981 New York City. The reason for the film’s title is that 1981 was considered New York City’s most violent year on record.

Film Review: ‘Spare Parts’!!

Beka Perlstein, Here…

thumbnail_18924

Spare Parts reminds you why it’s always a good idea to root for the underdog. You may not have heard of this film, or its director, or maybe even the majority of its actors… but that’s no reason to take a hard pass. Spare Parts is based on the true story of a group of Hispanic high school students who form a robotics team that goes on to compete in a national competition against college teams who are better equipped, better trained and better funded. Needless to say, the obstacles they face along the way are many.

Blood and Guts: ‘Mortal Kombat X’ Is Almost Here!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

I know we are all yelling inside, ‘MORTAL KOMBAT‘, just like that kid in the video did twenty three years ago. Did I just refer to 1992 as twenty three years ago? Fuck, I’m old. Well in those twenty three years, we will have had ten version of ‘Mortal Kombat’ games. Films not included. Come April 14th though, you’ll be able to decapitate heads, tear bones out, eye gouge, and anything else you really want to in the 10th version of ‘Mortal Kombat‘.

I’m sure you have it on your calendars already, but if you don’t, ‘The Walking Dead‘ starts back up on February 8th on AMC. This will pick up right where episode 8 left off back a couple of months ago. Looks like Rick Grimes and Michonne and the rest of the crew are battling something in the forest, which I can only imagine are zombies. It’s a well done trailer, and I can’t wait to see how they end season five. Enjoy. “Surviving together is all that matters.”

Well there’s some good news and bad news abuzz in the movie world that affects the DC movie-verse. ‘Suicide Squad‘ casting was released a few months ago which brought reactions in all spectrums from fans that are rather passionate about who will embody our favorite characters. I know the reactions were mixed because I had some pretty mixed reactions, myself. Particularly with Tom Hardy being cast in the role of Squad leader Rick Flag, however this doesn’t have to be an issue any longer as Hardy has exited the project over scheduling issues.

Sleater Kinney Has A Badass New Music Video!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 15th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

Sleater-Kinney

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Sleater-Kinney since 2000. On the old radio show in college (KJHK), we used to play their music all the time, particularly one of my favorites, “Oh!‘ off their One Beat album. This all-chick rock band is as badass as it gets in rock music. Not to mention the drummer’s name is Janet Weiss (you should get that reference). But we told you that they were releasing a new album soon, which is called ‘No Cities to Love‘, which will hit shelves on the 20th. Highly suggest you pick it up.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Boardwalk Empire’ Season 5!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 15th, 2015

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

91djH+eDidL._SL1500_

THE SERIES

It’s sad to see this amazing gangster show come to an end. It’s been a great five years, and this last season did a lot of things right in regards to wrapping up story lines and character arcs. I remember watching the first episode, which was directed by Martin Scorsese and thinking this is one of the better pilot episodes I’ve ever seen. I still think that to this day. There have been some great characters over the years, and it was sad to see how some of them ended up, but make no mistake, this fifth and final season hit its mark. HBO shortened this final season to only eight episodes and focused on wrapping up each character with an emphasis on Nucky Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi) childhood, upbringing, and how he became who he is.

I know I’m in the minority with my opinion on Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s hosting gig on the Golden Globes. It’s over, been done, trite, stale, hackneyed, vapid, unoriginal, hack and incredibly cliched. I wasn’t a faithful ‘Saturday Night Live‘ viewer when they were starring and every year they host an awards show, I remember why. Blu-ray Review: ‘Kundo’!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 8th, 2015

Hey guys, Jana here,

kundo

THE FILM

To say all martial arts films are alike, is like saying every potato chip is the same. Sure there’s a base formula, but the good ones add to that recipe to make each film stand out on their own. Take the following films into consideration: ‘Seven Samurai‘, ‘Enter The Dragon‘, ‘IP Man‘, ‘The Karate Kid‘, ‘Kill Bill Vol. 1 & 2‘, ‘13 Assassins‘ and any Van Damme movie you want, they are all martial arts films, but they have an entirely unique identity. I grew up on old martial arts films with horrendous English dubbing and every action star there ever was. I developed a deep appreciation for and love of all things Eastern that has carried through my adult life. I was excited to see ‘Kundo‘ and have, in fact, watched it three times.

Film Review: ‘Selma’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

se

It’s no doubt that Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most influential people in the world. He fought for basic human rights, received a Nobel Peace Prize, and not only changed a nation for good, but changed the world. This film is not necessarily a biopic on iconic man, but rather a glimpse on a short period of time that focuses on the 1965 voting marches from Selma, Alabama to Montgomery, Alabama, that was to ensure that anyone, no matter your race, color, creed, or religion, could have the right to vote.

Film Review: ‘Predestination’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 8th, 2015

Janet W., Here…

2013_04_15  predestination_0241 2_{6320ac3a-9984-e311-8492-d4ae527c3b65}

Time travel has been done before Back to the Future, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Timecop, Terminator, and most recently Interstellar, but it hasn’t been done like this.  It is like Interstellar had a lovechild with the film, Womb.  If you haven’t seen Womb or Interstellar, just know that they were both mind-benders in two different ways that join together in Predestination. To mention the aspects would give the story away.  I believe this is the first time a film has explored the consequences of time travel in such a raw way.  No holds barred doesn’t even come close to the conclusions the viewer will see in this perverse tale.
