Hillary’s Review of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 31st, 2014

Hillary T., Here…

guardians-galaxy

I was waiting for this screening, I’m not going to lie. I was excited to see if the movie was going to live up to the hype! I mean, James Gunn, an all star cast, a killer soundtrack, Marvel? Could it do it? Guardians of the Galaxy did! From start to finish this is an action packed movie! It opens with Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt’s) back story. 1980’s.

Film Review: Guardians of the Galaxy’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 30th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-Movie-Trailer-Pic

Since Marvel became their own movie studio back in 2008 with the first ‘Iron Man‘ movie, they have quickly become one of the most lucrative movie studios in Hollywood in less than ten years. With films like ‘Iron Man‘, ‘Thor‘, ‘Captain America‘, ‘Hulk‘, and the billion dollar blockbuster ‘The Avengers‘, you can see why so many people stand in line for hours on end to see the top visual effects, greatest actors, and the fun and thrilling story lines for their favorite superheroes. And of course we all know that Marvel is now famous for connecting each of their films with cameos of heroes from other movies and those exciting end credit sequences after each of their films.

Bruce Campbell Will Star in ‘Evil Dead’ Series!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 29th, 2014
Hey guys, Jana here,

evil-dead-2-crazy-ash-27

Looks like Sam Raimi was holding a little something back when he spoke about his ‘Last Of Us‘ project at Comic-Con. Raimi was excited about his new project, and added a little info that he and his brother, Ivan Raimi were co-writing ‘The Evil Dead‘ TV show with Bruce Campbell. While this is  great news for fans of ‘The Evil Dead‘, it managed to get even better. How could this get better? Campbell, who was the star of the original trilogy, confirmed on Twitter that he intends to star in the series!

Is ‘Boondock Saints 3’ Actually Happening?!?!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 28th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

BDDefinitionBoondockSaints-2-1080

I’m not in the business of spreading rumors, but I can almost call this one a fact. Looks like the die-hard fans of Troy Duffy’sBoondock Saints‘ from 1999 is getting it’s third installment!!! The best part about this one for me is that we don’t have to wait 10 years for a third, like we did for the sequel, ‘Boondock Saints: All Saints Day‘ was released in 2009.

Hey guys, Jana here,

Comic-Con gives and it just keeps giving. This time they gave us the red-band trailer for ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For‘. ‘Sin City‘ from 2005 and based on Frank Miller’s graphic novels, was a groundbreaking hit. Now Co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Miller have joined forces once again to give us the next chapter in the tale of the inhabitants of Basin City. ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For‘ gives us more of Miller’s riveting storytelling and a lot more of the stylized violence the first installment was packed full of.

SDCC may have come to an end, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few secrets still left in the movie world. Fans got the treat of seeing the first ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1‘ trailer that wasn’t made up of random Capitol propaganda. My heartstrings were pulled some as I saw the late Philip Seymour Hoffman as Plutarch Heavensbee talking to President Coin (Julianne Moore).

Comic-Con isn’t a place where only huge bombs of information get dropped, it’s also chock-full of fans spreading rumors like the wildfires that all too often consume the San Diego area anyway. Seems like one of the biggest rumors surrounded the potential casting for a Marvel Studios property, ‘Doctor Strange‘. Fans have been dropping names like Tom Hardy, Jared Leto and Benedict Cumberbatch in mass conversations that branched out until at least a few of the names were being taken as gospel truth. I’ve got the answer, kids, and it’s NOT Cumberbatch.

Blu-ray Review: ‘Ginger Snaps’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 25th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

61abmZkAgyL._SY300_

THE FILM

I admit, I’m a suck for werewolf films. Ever since I was shown 1941’s ‘Wolf-Man‘ when I was very little by my dad, I knew that I would be hooked on werewolves for life. Then I watched Michael Jackson’sThriller‘ video and ‘An American Werewolf in London‘ soon after that, while all under the age of eight. Needless to say, these werewolf films have had a profound effect on me, and might be the igniting reason why I love the horror genre so much. When I was in college, I came across a film called ‘Ginger Snaps‘, which was only released in Canada at the time, and being a big movie buff, I had to get my hands on any film that wasn’t being released in the U.S. yet.

Firefly. I only need that one word to raise blood pressure, inspire hopes and in some cases, cause Mandarin curses through gritted teeth. Joss Whedon’s rag-tag group of soldiers, mechanics, a courtesan, a pilot, doctor and a preacher….and Jane, have burrowed into the depths of each and every Browncoat-loving fan. We curse Fox for their ignorance in airing the episodes incorrectly and then for canceling. I know what you’re thinking…another Hercules film?  The Greek myth of the legendary son of Zeus and a mortal woman, Alcmene.  Brett Ratner’s Hercules is a different kind of animal.  At first, Hercules opens a lot like The Scorpion King.  A nephew of Hercules (Dwayne Johnson), Iolaus (Reece Ritchie), is bound and about to be killed.  Iolaus tells his would be murderers tales of the victories of Hercules.  Enter Hercules through heavy plumes of smoke, which is quite close to Mathayus emerging from the soot of the fireplace in The Scorpion King.

There is a certain pattern to almost every movie genre. If you watch enough movies, you’ll notice the patterns for yourself. This is especially true in regards to romantic comedies. Look at Kurt Vonnegut’s shapes of stories and you’ll get a pretty good idea of what these patterns look like. Le Chef follows the typical “rom com” mold without any deviation. It is in this rigid devotion to the mold that it falters.

Check out the Hot Tub Time Machine 2 Trailer Here!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 24th, 2014

Hey guys, Jana here,

I’ve been anticipating ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2‘ since I saw the last one. We got our hands on not only the trailer for the new flick, but the red-band trailer. It looks like as much fun as the first was with one small hitch. Adam, the John Cusack Adam, is absent. Instead of John Cusack, we have Adam Scott, not that it’s going to ruin the movie, but the same guys we started the journey with are not the same guys we’re going to end it with. Lou and Nick are still being played by Rob Corddry and Craig Robinson, Chevy Chase is back as the repairman and Clarke Duke is Jacob. This time instead of re-living the past, they’re taking on the future.

It’s got a logo that any toddler recognizes and parents can guarantee that if it’s bearing the Disney name it’s a safe bet that at least someone in the family will love it. Hello, Jana here,

 50ShadesofGreyCoverArt

Are you sick of the whole ‘Fifty Shades of Grey‘ thing? The books sold like wildfire to uptight, undersexed women like they were Prozac-filled chocolate bars. I wanted to know what was so exciting about the E.L. James trilogy, so I took a weekend and read them. Boooooooring. That’s the verdict I came up with. Knowing that they started as ‘Twilight‘ fan fiction makes it pretty obvious to see the connections. Domineering male that is either everything or nothing to the girl that always blended in the background, wasn’t the perky volleyball captain, plain in her own way, but he sees something in her. Something he can’t turn away from. He tries because he knows that if she gets too close, it can be dangerous. Blah, blah, blah, blah-blah!

Hey guys, Jana here,

bradley-cooper1

The entertainment world goes through fads, just like fashion. One day we’re inundated with talking sea animals from every animated company, the next day it’s all about bugs. Right now, culinary genius is taking center stage.

The Weinstein Company began production today on ‘Adam Jones‘. This pic puts Bradley Cooper (‘Silver Linings Playbook‘) and Sienna Miller (‘GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra‘) together and adds a little spice making Cooper a bad-boy Michelin chef who has to change his ways. The project was originally called ‘The Chef‘ until  ‘Chef‘, Jon Favreau’s tale of a chef who loses his restaurant and hits to the road in a food truck piecing his life, and his family, back together along the way. Obviously this can’t work in the film industry an agreement was made and a change of title followed.

Disney is hoping the golden goose lays another blockbuster with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales“. We’ve got a release date of July 7, 2017. I’m a big Johnny Depp fan, and I love the Pirates movies. There’s a point where you have to let a good thing end while it’s still awesome. The last film ‘On Stranger Tides‘, seemed to begin digging it’s own resting place in Davey Jones’ Locker. I really think that’s where the franchise jumped the proverbial shark. I kind of think Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley‘s departures started the series in a tail spin.

Film Review: ‘Lucy’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

lucy-movie-trailer

I have no idea why such amazing talents as Scarlett Johansson and Morgan Freeman said “Yes” to Luc Besson’s  ‘Lucy‘. Maybe it’s because it was shot in Taiwan and France, and the actors got to travel and see the sights, but it definitely couldn’t be because of the script or filming. There was a time when I loved Director/Writer/Producer Luc Besson. He gave us ‘Leon: The Professional‘, ‘The Fifth Element‘, and ‘La Femme Nikita‘. He makes most of his living by writing shoddy action movie screenplays and producing, such as the ‘Taken’ franchise, ‘The Transporter’ movies, and many other action films that you don’t remember anymore.

Clearly I love movies if I’m spending this much time writing about them. Even better than finding out details on new and upcoming films is getting to review them. I have always given my friends and family suggestions on TV shows or films they should watch. It may take them a while to come around to doing it, but once they do, they’re as much in love with it as I knew they would be. I have one friend that is still snubbing my suggestion of a cure for depressing days by watching Cameron Crowe’s ‘Elizabethtown’, but he’s not like everyone else. So I don’t count him.  I’m good at this if I know you.

The Top 10 Perfectly Cast Movie Roles!!

Top Ten Perfectly Cast Roles

The Bard of Avon said it best, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Some actors are great, and shine in everything they do (Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Daniel Day-Lewis). Some actors are smart enough to pick roles that best use their limited skill sets (Keanu Reeves). This list takes a look at the perfect pairing of actor and role. In this list, you will find a pairing of actor and role so great that the actor ceases to be themselves and instead makes the character take on a life of its own. These pairings are so uniquely theirs that you can’t imagine anyone else taking their place should Hollywood have the audacity to try.

Hey guys, it’s Jana.

Gosling Crowe

Let’s play a little game called ‘A few of my favorite things’. That’s right – YOU get a car! You get a car and yes, YOU GET A CAR! OK, so not quite like that. You don’t have to worry about my stating anything  about “Raindrops on Roses”.  My list begins with Burt Reynolds’ laugh, Comic BooksBeethoven – Preferably Piano Sonata No. 8 ‘Pathetique’ in C minor, all 3 movements, Good music. Not just ‘eh’ kind of music, but GREAT music, Led Zeppelin, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Harry Connick, Jr.,  and the amazing Shane Black’s movies.

Added into that list is cute boys that can sing. Russell Crowe happens to fit that bill. I’ve no idea if Ryan Gosling can sing or not, but he is fun to look at. Crowe and Gosling have signed on board for a police drama ‘The Nice Guys‘ with ‘Iron Man 3‘ director Shane Black putting his vision to film.

Hi everyone, Jana here,

Bryan Cranston

When you take a multi-faceted actor like Bryan Cranston, his many hats show throughout his career. You’ve got the spineless, browbeaten dad, Hal from ‘Malcolm in the Middle‘, the absolutely brilliant, frightening, genius that is Walter White from ‘Breaking Bad‘. Then you turn-around and he’s in the ‘Rock of Ages‘ musical whaling out Pat Benatar’s ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot‘. He does some fantastic voice-over work for animated productions. Remember the 6-episode of the animated version to ‘Clerks‘? Chances are if you’ve seen that, you’ve heard Cranston’s voice ( you also understand Jay’s saying “we steal monkeys all the time!” in a later film), but I digress. PLUS!!!  Don’t forget that he’s a bad boy with the roller skates! Remember that episode in Malcolm where he had a big skate scene? That was really him doing it! He’s a renaissance man. The real deal. So it shouldn’t be such a surprise that after Cranston wrapped with ‘Breaking Bad’ that he went straight to Broadway.

Hey guys, Jana here,

PicMonkey Collage

So we’ve known for a while that there is going to be a re-make of the Marvel superhero ‘Daredevil‘. We know that Marvel has partnered with Netflix to bring us a 13-episode drama based on the comic book stories of the blind, lawyer from Hell’s Kitchen.

We’ve known for a while that Charlie Cox (‘Boardwalk Empire‘) is going to play the eponymous Matt Murdock/Daredevil, and that Vincent D’Onofrio (‘Law and Order‘)  is going to play the juxtapositional Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin. Today, we’ve gotten some more casting news. Deborah Ann Woll, Jessica from ‘True Blood‘ has been given the role of Karen Page.

‘Found’ Slashes It’s Way To A Theater Release!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 17th, 2014

Hey everyone, Jana here,

Found

Found‘ is a new offering to the horror genre in a most refreshing way. A coming of age slasher flick that tells a unique story. Screw the found-footage format that every single horror film seems to turn to. It’s not only unusual for the way it’s shot, but because of the story-line.

Based on the novel by Todd Rigney (‘Crush‘), who teams with director Scott Shirmer (‘Boy in the Making‘) to build the script, ‘Found‘ centers around Marty, a shy, bullied fifth-grader who takes refuge in horror films – until his life turns into one. After finding a human head in his brother’s closet, Marty fears for the safety of his family while making a desperate effort to reconnect with his brother, because those homicidal cravings of his will turn life as Marty knows it upside down and inside out.

His films include ‘Slacker‘, ‘School of Rock‘, the ‘Before‘ series, ‘Bernie‘, and the iconic and legendary piece of cinema ‘Dazed and Confused‘. Film Review: ‘The Purge 2: Anarchy’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 17th, 2014

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

purge

A year later, we are out on the scary and violent streets rather than in the confines of a big home with the sequel to last year’s big box office hit ‘The Purge‘ with ‘The Purge: Anarchy‘. Writer/Director James DeMonaco concocted a brilliant and chaotic story where we are set in the very near future where the U.S. constitution is done away with and a few select people were put in charge and called The Founding Fathers. These Founding Fathers re-wrote a new constitution that added in a new law where once a year for a twelve hour period, everyone was entitled to “Purge”, where all forms of crime were legal, including rape and murder.

Last night my six-year old son E and I saw the next high flying adventure of Dusty Crophopper in ‘Planes 2‘. He was so excited to see the movie since he loved the first film . There are a lot of things to like about this movie, such as the theme of bravery, the old saying that you can be anything (the continuing theme from the first movie), and that sometimes you have to follow instructions even when you don’t want to, which are important things for children and adults to remember.

Hi everyone, Bryan Here….

CWR001_Mock04

If any of you know me, you would know that I’m a huge fan and advocate of vinyl. I’ve been listening, purchasing, and collecting vinyl for many years and there are no signs of stopping any time soon. Music sounds ten times better on a vinyl album than any CD or MP3 ever could hope to sound. Don’t believe me? Do an experiment yourself and play the same song on the same speakers on vinyl, then on a digital format. You’ll be amazed. Needless to say, I get all giddy when a new record label opens up shop that specifies in releasing new and old music on vinyl. And fortunately for me, a dear friend and writer for this very site has started his own record label after several years of planning. Not only that, the new record label known as Classic Waxxx Records is releasing its first album under its banner. Below is the official press release complete with all the cool info on the limited editions, a sampling of the music, and a link to purchase.

If you’re a fan of soda, then i’m sure you have heard of Dr Pepper, which is a sweet cool soda that has quenched millions of people’s thirsts over many decades. If you are from Texas, then you would know the soda referred to as Dublin Dr Pepper, which was Dr Pepper made with real pure sugar, rather than the horrible corn syrup that infects the rest of sodas today. Dublin Dr Pepper was in fact made in Dublin, Texas, which is a small town on the west side of Texas, about two hours from Dallas. And I’m sure, you’ve heard that the Dr Pepper/Snapple corporation sued and eventually destroyed the Dublin Dr Pepper brand, name, and town, even though Dublin has been around for more than 120 years.

Dan-Akroyd-Says-No-Bill-Murray-Ghostbusters-3

I think we can all agree that ‘Ghostbusters‘ is one of the best films ever made. And I hate to say it, but it’s a 30-year old movie, which makes me very old. So, for the 30th anniversary, the movie studio is re-releasing the film in theaters for a limited time, starting August 29th. Now if you haven’t seen ‘Ghostbusters‘ in the theater, it is mandatory that you do so. And even if you have, it’s probably been a long while, so best make sure you get to your local theater and see it again.

Ever hear of two things that shouldn’t go together but end up working? A bit of chocolate in your homemade chili, Kevin Youkilis  as a Yankee, Catherine ZetaJones and Michael Douglas? OK, well maybe not them so much, anymore, but you get my point. ‘American Psycho‘ – the book by Bret Easton Ellis that made a 2000 movie with Christian Bale, evolved into a musical? Yup, you read that one right. Off-Broadway theater company, Second Stage is going to present the U.S. premiere. This has been discussed and debated, but ultimately it’s happened and coming to America next!

Hi all, Jana here,

endo-silence-full

Martin Scorsese (‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘ and ‘The Departed‘) is one of my favorite directors. This hasn’t been a secret because I rave on his work, constantly. Well, right now Scorsese is going to get the chance to make a film he’s had on his list for more than a decade. I can’t imagine how that must feel to wait for over 10 years to do a film and it finally comes together! The center of attention in this announcement is that it’s for the film of the novel ‘Silence‘. Novelist Shusako Endo had given permission for the novel adaptation to be made once before in 1971. As with everything in Hollywood these days, a re-make is in the works. This time, a bigger budget, bigger stars, bigger director and , probably, a bigger audience.

Back in 2011, I ended my “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” review excited about what the future held for the rebooted series. As the screen went dark and the credits of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” began to roll, I realized my high expectations had been met just three years later. If “Rise” hit all the right notes of an introductory chapter, then “Dawn” was even more on pitch with the rising action of a second act.

Plans were made for the man to begin filming the ending of his trilogy of ‘Clerks‘ in May. Unfortunately for us…and the world as a whole, this is not meant to be at this time. Smith gave a statement that The Weinstein Company, who own the rights to the franchise, passed on the sequel. There is no way they could have heard him correctly! This is ‘Clerks’ to the third power! Disney Takes Flight With Dumbo as Live-Action Film!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jul 8th, 2014

Hi all, Jana here,

dumbo

I love a good Disney movie. I still watch Disney cartoons under the guise of “my kids want to watch it”, no one buys this anymore, it just makes me feel a little less like a 7 year old if I pass it off as the kids. Like anything,  there are favorites and then you have those not-so-favorites that you watch only if you have to and you’re going to stare at the top corner of the screen to try and keep from crying. ‘Dumbo‘ falls into that category for me. It has it’s good points, a drunk mouse is ALWAYS hysterical, but the whole separating Dumbo from his mom is just mean. I get it, there has to be an event that moves the story forward and apparently this heart-crushingly brutal scene is vital. I can’t listen to Alison Krauss sing ‘Baby Mine‘ as that is enough to send the water-works into a permanent and soul-crushing on position.

From start to finish, Tammy had me. Had me laughing hysterically that is. She slams into a deer on her way to work at her dead end job, and well, it only gets funnier from there. This movie was made for McCarthy, literally, by her husband Ben Falcone and McCarthy herself, and it shows their combined comic talents.

Film Review: ‘Deliver Us From Evil’!!

Hi everyone, Bryan Here…

We’re in the middle of the big summer movie blockbuster season and Screen Gems has released a new horror film for the July 4th weekend, hoping that the big horror crowds that usually show up at the start of the year or around Halloween will take a break from the BBQ’s and hit up this demonic possession film ‘Deliver Us From Evil‘. It’s got a good premise and the trailers have been quite promising. Even the main story line about a NY detective investigating some really creepy stuff has its merits. But although ‘Deliver Us From Evil‘ has some creepy moments and a surprisingly good exorcism scene, its bad dialogue, story telling, and acting make this possession movie less than stellar and not the horror movie you were hoping for.

Earth to Echo is a film that exhibits what it really means to be a friend.  Can distance or circumstance separate real friends?

In the spirit of amateur filmmaking (constant shaking and quick pans that make your head hurt and your stomach queasy), we see the world, or at least part of Nevada, through the eyes of three, middle school aged, close friends, and a mysterious watcher.  Munch (Reese Hartwig) is a hyper, brainiac/hypochondriac.  Alex (Teo Halm) is a foster child that is used to being left behind.  Tuck (Astro) is Mr. Storyteller who has a camera glued to him at all times.  Munch, Alex, and Tuck are faced with mass eviction of their neighborhood for the construction of a complex series of highways.

Community‘. Yup, I’m going to throw in my two cents with the announcement that Yahoo has decided to prolong the show’s inevitable demise by giving it a location transplant. If network TV chooses to axe a program, there is still the chance that an online company can jump in with CPR and revive it. Yahoo has been wanting to share the success that Netflix, Amazon and Hulu have all enjoyed. Yahoo and Sony Pictures Television will stream a 13-episode sixth season of the ensemble comedy. Dan Harmon is carrying the flag as showrunner, once again. “I am very pleased that Community will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” Harmon said in a release announcing the deal. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. THE FILM

The Monkey’s Paw‘ is a tale old as time. Back in 1902, author W.W. Jacobs wrote a short story about a family receiving a dried up monkey’s paw where it supposedly granted three wishes. Though each wish was granted, they caused dire consequences for those who used the monkey’s paw. Since 1902, there have been many interpretations and adaptations on Jacobs’s story. Whether it be films, musicals, operas, or even the famous ‘Simpsons‘ episode ‘Treehouse of Horror II‘, this story has been heard or seen by everyone at some point in time.
