Aug/2018

Hi, Bryan Here…

logotyo

We now have the THIRD round elimination for our new Bracket or Sweet 16, which is the Best TV Shows from the 1990s through present day. Several weeks ago, we took a couple of days to come up with 64 of the best tv shows from that time-frame, and we put them in a NCAA-style tournament bracket to see what would emerge as the best show of that time. We separated them into two categories, which were comedy series and drama series. Even in this THIRD round, there were some big fights amongst us. Blood was drawn, bones were broken, words were said, dogs and cats started living together – MASS HYSTERIA. You can click the link below to see the bracket in its entirety and print it out and play along.  This was a lot of fun. We will be posting some images of our bracket picks for you to see in full on our FACEBOOK page, which you should visit to catch up on all the latest information. And don’t forget to visit iTunes and Stitcher and subscribe to our podcast. Enjoy the show.

Miranda Hart-1713360

Paul Feig has his finger on the world’s collective funny bone. He knows what’s funny and he fosters it where he finds it and who he finds it in. In this instance, he has found it in British funny girl Miranda Hart. She has a self-written BBC sitcom, ‘Miranda‘ which she stars in, and she has a recurring role on BBC’sCall The Midwife‘.

Dayo Okeniyi may not have a name you recognize right away, but you’ve surely noticed his work in a few films. He also has ‘Runner Runner‘, ‘The Endless Now‘ and ‘Endless Love‘ to his credit. His star is definitely on the rise in Hollywood.

Hello, Jana here,

You have probably heard about the new Adam Sandler and Kevin James venture ‘Pixels‘. Don’t write this one off just because you see their names on the starring list. I know many subscribe to the theory that their comedic talents are past their prime and they give us nothing new but vapid buffoonery. I like slapstick comedy, I like the obvious joke. I appreciated the originality of ‘Grown Ups‘ and groaned with the rest of you at the dreck that was ‘Grown Ups 2‘. But I think they have a quality that works when they team up together.

‘Phantasm: Ravager’ Is No Longer a Rumor!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 29th, 2014
Hello, Jana here,

PhantasmVteaser_big

You can’t call yourself a sci-fi//horror enthusiast without watching 1979’s original ‘Phantasm‘. The story of a macabre grave robber named Tall Man and his killer spheres began a franchise and received a die-hard fan base.  Four movies spanned 35 years time with director-writer Don Coscarelli at the helm for each one. 16 years has passed since ‘Phantasm IV‘ gave fans another dose of Coscarelli-centric horror-story-telling, and they have been reeling for more.

John Cusack Enters the Wall Street World!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 29th, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

John Cusack with a serious expression wearing a suit and tie

When you set a series in the world of Wall Street, you need characters colorful enough to not get lost in the atmosphere. Take ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘, for example, Leonardo DiCaprio’s portrayal of Jordan Belfort was larger than life. He had to be outrageous to stand out in the fast-paced, high-stakes land of the almighty dollar. Christian Bale’s version of Patrick Bateman from ‘American Psycho‘ stands out just as much. Granted, these personalities are not what you would assume to be the norm for traders working on Wall Street, but the ambience definitely fosters these type of personalities.

ernest-et-celestine-main-review

Ernest and Celestine” is an Academy Award nominated (Best Animated Feature) film, from the creators the “Triplets of Belleville” and “The Secret of Kells”, about the unlikely friendship between a bear and mouse. I watched this film in its original French language with subtitles, but it is also available in a dubbed English format, with a voice cast including some slackers you’ve probably never heard of like Forest Whitaker, Mackenzie Foy, Lauren Bacall, William H. Macy, and Paul Giamatti. Though the French cast is not packed with name droppers (for Americans anyway), they are perfection, especially Pauline Brunner who voiced the darling little mouse Celestine, and Lambert Wilson as the grumpy bear Ernest.

Hi, Bryan Here…

Arnold Schwarzenegger has been on quite a role since his political career in California. He has come back in full force to the movie world and has given us three films, including this one, with five more projects on the way. Needless to say, he has been busy. The first two films, since his time in the Governor’s chair in California were ‘The Last Stand‘ and ‘Escape Plan‘, both of which were PG-13 action vehicles for Schwarzenegger that had a silly and highly entertaining premise, even though the plots of both films were ridiculous. But in both of those movies, we received Arnold’s famous one-liners and his angry glare as he looks down upon his enemies with a giant machine gun in his hand, ever so ready to add to his impressive body count.

This is the role that marked him as the next big star and made him a household name. He has had his pick of prime acting gigs and his name has been on the tongue of casting directors since then.

Record Store Day is almost here and here on our 30th podcast, we let you known some of the coolest releases that will be coming out that day. What is Record Store Day, you ask? The original idea for Record Store Day was conceived by Chris Brown, and was founded in 2007 by Eric Levin, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don Van Cleave and Brian Poehneras a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally. This is the one day that all of the independently owned record stores come together with artists to celebrate the art of music. ‘Game of Thrones’ Headed to the Big Screen?!?

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 24th, 2014

Hi Jana here,

george-rr-martin-on-the-conan-show

Author George R.R. Martin has created success with his ‘A Song of Ice and Fire‘ series that has been extremely well received in it’s adaptation to series play on HBO. The small screen may, indeed, be too small to cover everything  Martin has given the production team to work with. Martin said, “It all depends on how long the main series runs. Do we run for seven years? Do we run for eight? Do we run for 10? The books get bigger and bigger in scope. It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

The latest installment of ‘Ghostbusters‘ has turned into the questionable existence equivalent of the Loch Ness Monster of Hollywood. Film Review: ‘Divergent’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 20th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

DIVERGENT

Ok, I’ll admit it. My name is Bryan Kluger, and I’m a Young Adult Movie virgin. I’ve never seen a ‘Twilight‘ movie nor have I seen either of ‘The Hunger Games‘ yet. And to be perfectly honest, I have not yet read any of these books that the movies were based on. Part of it is that I never got around to it while another part was that these stories didn’t really interest me. With ‘Twilight‘, my personal preference is to have my monsters whether they be vampires or werewolves, go on a nightly bender, wreaking havoc and killing for blood, only to have a hero stop their evil thirst and put them in their place. They are not to have vampires who wear glitter and talk about their feelings for three hours. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Film Review: ‘Muppets Most Wanted’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 20th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

3022014-inline-i-2-new-muppet-movie

It’s very difficult to find a sequel that’s as good as the original. There aren’t a lot out there that are great sequels, but when they do come along, they are remembered forever. And maybe what worked so well for the first Muppet film that starred Jason Segel and Amy Adams is that it had a human element to it, and didn’t just follow the Muppets around. That’s not to say that this sequel ‘Muppets: Most Wanted‘ isn’t a lot of fun and very entertaining. It is, but it doesn’t have that magic that the last one had.

Film Review: ‘Jodorowsky’s Dune’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 20th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

Jodorowskys-Dune-poster

I’m sure you have either seen, read, or heard of the sci-fi epic tale of ‘Dune‘ by now. You know the film by David Lynch that starred Kyle MacLachlan, Sting, Max Von Sydow, Virginia Madsen, Patrick Stewart, and Sean Young? Well, if you saw the film, you would know that it is very similar to a lot of science-fiction movies that we have seen over the past thirty years, but it never was a box office smash or held up in later years. Sure, there is a small cult following for it now, but it has nowhere near the amount of fans that ‘Star Wars‘ or ‘Star Trek‘ fans have now.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Julianne-Moore-as-Little-Mermaid-Annie-Leibovitz

Director Sofia Coppola is taking a new approach to her career in moving away from the more adult themes to a straight-on kids movie. She is signing her contract to direct a live-action adaptation of ‘The Little Mermaid‘ for Universal Pictures. The goal for this project is to fast track it to hopefully compete in 2015. Sofia has kids now, and like so many actors who are parents, tend to do more kid-centric films because of their little ones. Seems like Sofia is no different.

Podcast #29 – Movies That Should Be Made Into Musicals!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 17th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

shop2_t588

We hope you are enjoying our 29th podcast as much as we are. In the past, we have done a few segments where we give a pitch to a wealthy billionaire (fake, of course) of a topic we want to see greenlit. We have pitched our own music festivals, film festivals, and TV networks, as we discussed all the cool things that we wanted to create and give the world. So along those same lines, we came up with Films that we want to see made into musicals for the Broadway stage. And the more ridiculous the better. My example to my fellow podcasters was ‘SE7EN: The Musical‘!! It only got better from there! And please let us know, what you think by going to our FACEBOOK page, which you should visit to catch up on all the latest information. And don’t forget to visit iTunes and Stitcher and subscribe to our podcast. Enjoy the show.

Misty S., Here….

the-walking-dead-the-grove

This episode of ‘The Walking Dead‘ is one of the most shocking and heartbreaking of this season. We see a child break and find out secrets from the prison, which was heart-breaking. Tyrese, Carol and the three girls are still walking the tracks. During the walk, Carol comments on smelling a fire. They wind up at a house near the fire Daryl set. Milka kills her first walker and proves Carol wrong about her toughness. Lizzie has a meltdown at the house over Carol killing the walker she was playing with. It takes for some of the burned walkers to almost kill Milka for Lizzie to realize that the walkers are not her “friends” and that they do not want to “play”.

Film Review: ‘Visitors’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 14th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

detail.baa7b437

I always assumed reviewing films would be an extremely awesome thing to do for a living. I never took into account that you won’t always enjoy what you review. I can watch documentaries, I actually prefer them at times. National Geographic and Smithsonian documentaries are great! I love history, current events and learning about new weapons or drugs that are problems now. I don’t even require things being in English to enjoy them. I can read subtitles and if the actors are good enough I don’t even have to rely on subtitles.

Film Review: ‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

grandbudapesthotel-2

There are so many filmmakers out there that have given us amazing and iconic movies. From  Steven Spielberg to Stanley Kubrick and from John Hughes to Danny Boyle, we have laughed, cried, and felt every perk on the emotion scale while watching movies through the years. However, some of our favorite filmmakers have lost their creative eye and ability to make quality films, while their movies earlier in their career won Oscars and pushed these directors to super stardom, but later in their career, their films have us questioning their talent while their films are met with very negative reviews across the board. It’s truly a sad day when this happens, and unfortunately it happens more often then I’d like to admit.

That is until about a year ago, ‘Veronica Mars‘ creator Rob Thomas and Veronica herself Kristen Bell took to the crowd-funder website Kickstarter and asked us fans of the amazing tv show ‘Veronica Mars‘ to fund a feature film. Warner Bros. told Bell and Thomas that if they successfully funded the $2 million dollar budget, that they would match that and distribute and market the movie.

Film Review: ‘Need For Speed’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 13th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

need-for-speed-first-look-06102013-201607

I was trying to think of a movie that was based on a video game that was truly amazing. I couldn’t do it. I went through all of them, and while I enjoyed some of the attempts, nothing really stood out as being unforgettable or even that great. Sure, you have your ‘Resident Evil‘ movies and your ‘Tomb Raider‘ films, but ultimately those are still forgettable and don’t hold up all that well, although they have made a killing at the box office.

Hello Jana here,

downton-abbey-logo

Downton Abbey‘ has taken the TV series platform that Americans are familiar with, turned it on its ear, polished it to a British-shine and showed us what a witty, elegant and proper thing it could be. Unless you’ve been living in a cave, you know the premise. And  if you’ve been living in a cave, I’ll give you a rundown so you’re caught up. Lord Crawley sees his family heritage, especially the grand country home Downton Abbey, as his mission in life. The death of his heir aboard the Titanic means distant cousin Matthew Crawley, a Manchester lawyer, suddenly is next in line and accepts moving onto the vast estate with his even more modernist, socially engaged mother, who clashes with his lordship’s domineering, conservative mother, the dowager. Marrying off the daughters is another concern. Meanwhile, the butler presides over a staff which serves the family, but also lead most of their entire lives in the servants’ quarters, intriguing amongst themselves.

Amazon Announces 4 Pilots Green-lit for Series!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 13th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

 dt.common.streams.StreamServer

Amazon jumped head-first into original programming with 5 pilots that were uploaded to their site where they encouraged viewers to watch and comment their opinions. I’m guessing they got the reaction they wanted as they have now picked four of the titles to give a series order. This includes the first dramas for their fledgling, innovative line-up with ‘The After‘ and ‘Bosch‘. Their new comedy series are ‘Mozart In The Jungle‘ and ‘Transparent‘. The fifth pilot that was not picked up, ‘The Rebels‘ comes from Ice Cube and Michael Strahan. From Amazon’s first pilot season saw eight comedies going to pilot while only two were picked up for series, ‘Alpha House‘ and ‘Betas‘. Of those two, ‘Alpha House‘ has been renewed for a second season and ‘Betas‘ has been discontinued.

Paramount is Remaking ‘Explorers’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 12th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

Yes, Paramount is remaking one of my favorite 80’s film, ‘Explorers‘. You know the one where a young Ethan Hawke, River Phoenix, and Jason Presson built a spaceship out of an old tilt-a-whirl carnival ride? Yes that one. It is still one of my favorite movies and is one of the big reasons I got into science, space and film. Everything about the movie spoke to me as a kid, and I wanted so desperately to build a spaceship after watching that film.

Hello Jana here,

The Beatles

I fell in love with The Beatles when I was a kid. I loved their sound and that it wasn’t dependent on synthesizers and gallons of hairspray like most popular bands in the 80’s. To me the sound was fresh and a very welcome change. This made it easy for me to follow them into their later years where their sound was more psychedelic. Their iconic musical catalog has been purchased, from Sony/ATV Music Publishing, to make an animated children’s series called ‘Beat Bugs‘. The project is currently in development for the US/Australian production company, GRACE.

We now have the SECOND round elimination for our new Bracket, which is the Best TV Shows from the 1990s through present day. A few weeks ago, we took a couple of days to come up with 64 of the best tv shows from that time-frame, and we put them in a NCAA-style tournament bracket to see what would emerge as the best show of that time. We separated them into two categories, which were comedy series and drama series. Even in this SECOND round, there were some big fights amongst us. Blood was drawn, bones were broken, words were said, dogs and cats started living together – MASS HYSTERIA. You can click the link below to see the bracket in its entirety and print it out and play along.  This was a lot of fun. ‘Fletch Lives’ On!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 11th, 2014

Hello Jana here,

Fletch

If you’re like me, when you hear the name ‘Fletch‘, you automatically picture the journalist played by Chevy Chase. I think you can see where this one is going. Yes, ‘Fletch‘ is being rolled over with the re-make wheel. I appreciate that it’s been in the works for a very long time. At least since the late 90’s when Kevin Smith was attached to direct. Smith made a valiant effort to give things a re-boot with a son-of-Fletch-story line that would have portrayed Chase turning the reigns over to his son. There were names from Brad Pitt-to-Dave Chappelle-to Ellen Degeneres in the running for the title role. Eventually Smith dropped out to work on his own original work.

Film Review: ‘Tim’s Vermeer’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 11th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

2013-12-06-TimsVermeer3

I would imagine that only art students or avid art collectors would know the name Vermeer if it was spoken out loud, where the rest of us would have to Google his name and learn about this name. Vermeer is actually a name, well a last name in Johannes Vermeer, who was a great painter in the 1600s. His work is known all over the world and is sought after by royalty, celebrities, and very wealthy business people. What makes Vermeer standout than any other painter from the 1600s? Well that’s an interesting topic and question. It’s such a fascinating subject, that Penn and Teller (the magicians and entertainers) decided to make one of their famous documentaries about it.

In this episode of ‘The Walking Dead‘, we finally get through most of the psychological issues that the characters had. There’s  some action and suspense in this episode, even a tiny bit of love.  Let’s get to it. The show starts out with Bob reminiscing back to where he was right before Glen and Daryl find him. He’s walking down a street alone when Daryl and Glen find him. Fast forward to present, Bob, Sasha and Maggie are in the fog fighting off walkers in a pretty cool scene. Sasha thinks that finding Glen is a lost cause and after going back and forth, they still continue to look for him. They see the sign for Terminus start walking there to find Glen. Sasha tells Bob how they need to set up camp and chill somewhere and the next morning, Maggie leaves them to do this alone. Bob and Sasha follow her.

Sony to Reboot ‘Zorro’!!!

The last swashbuckler to hit the big screen was Captain Jack Sparrow in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean‘ films, but before him, there was another. Back in 1922 the tales of Zorro gripped the world with his master swordsmanship  and championing the defenseless. Since then Hollywood has made some bank off of the masked man at least a dozen times and with varying success. I’m pleased to announce there is going to be a reboot of the Zorro films. Not so much a reboot of original stories, as a new movie based on a new book about Zorro. If that made sense, I might have a future in writing!

Mary-Louise Parker Returning to Primetime!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Mar 6th, 2014

Hello, Jana here,

mary-louise-parker

I was worried after the final season of ‘Weeds‘ aired that I would not get my weekly dose of Mary-Louise Parker ala Nancy Botwin any longer. Looks like I have been worried for nothing. NBC has successfully courted Parker’s involvement in a comedy that will pilot this fall, ‘Feed Me‘. The project is described as a comedic exploration of adult intimacy and desire that centers on a dysfunctional family bound by love and the restaurant they run together. Parker will play the lead, Ellen, a slightly OCD wife, mother of two and accountant who is stuck in her ways and whose approach to life is a challenge for those around her, including her husband, parents and brothers, most of whom are in the restaurant business. I think TV has shown us that they will never make a movie on a ‘normal’ family, mainly because ‘normal’ is subjective and if you look closely, every family is dysfunctional. So they could probably just start stating that it’s a show about a family in the restaurant biz.

Film Review: ‘300: Rise of an Empire’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

EW-300-rise-of-an-empire-banner

You would think that by the look of ‘300: Rise of an Empire‘, the sequel to the 2006 hit film ‘300’, director Zack Snyder had returned to make this film. Well, you’d be wrong as Noam Murro directed this, making this film his first feature film. But don’t worry, Snyder seemed to have a heavy hand and watchful eye over this film, as his handprints are all over this from his screenplay to the camerawork. It’s all here again in this prequel, side story, and sequel that features a lot of the same characters from the original. ‘300’ cost $65 million to make back in 2006 and was largely made in front of a green screen. That film grossed over $457 million dollars.

Interview: Rob Minkoff 2014!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

Rob_Minkoff_co-director_TLK_12

I had the extreme pleasure of interviewing director Rob Minkoff, who directed 1994’s ‘The Lion King‘ for Disney. Is latest film, ‘Mr. Peabody & Sherman‘ releases this week. We discuss the cast, ‘The Lion King‘, ‘Forbidden Kingdom‘, some of his favorite movies, and that infamous scene in ‘The Lion King‘, which was when Simba fell into the wildflowers and the flowers blew in the wind and seemingly spelled out ‘SEX’. It was a fun interview in Dallas, TX. Go see ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman’ and read our REVIEW BY CLICKING HERE!

Film Review: ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 6th, 2014

Rebecca S., Here….

724674-mr-peabody-sherman-movie-6

When I was a little girl, I would snuggle up on the couch with my dad and watch reruns of his favorite cartoon, Rocky and Bullwinkle. He would tell me all about “moose and squirrel”, Boris and Natasha, George of the Jungle, and Dudley Do-Right… but the one I loved best was Peabody’s Improbable History. It was clever, snarky, educational in the worst way, and full of horribly great puns (which I am still a sucker for). I was worried when going to see the new DreamWorks (Shrek, How to train your Dragon) movie Mr. Peabody and Sherman, that it would not live up to the kitschy cool of the original 5 minute shorts. I was pleasantly surprised to find a smart, fun movie that kept the cool (and the horribly great puns).

See The First Image from ‘The Human Centipede 3’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 5th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

The-Human-Centipede-movie-poster

We have written about ‘The Human Centipede‘ quite a bit on this site. We are huge fans of the of the first two films, and have been clamoring for the epic third movie for quite some time. You can read about our previous coverage of part III here. Director Tom Six has been trying to make the third film for quite some time, but ran into some legal matters with one of the actors for a while, but all seems well right now. And that is good for us.

You Must Watch This ‘Afflicted’ Trailer!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 5th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

4guide_afflicted__large

This movie is high on my radar right now, and I’m sad that I missed it at last year’s ‘Fantastic Fest‘ in Austin. But good news is afoot, for this will be released next month, and it looks AMAZING. ‘Afflicted‘ looks like an insane horror movie that is shot in the ‘found footage’ style, with a little bit of ‘Chronicle‘ mixed in. Derek Lee and Clif Prowse wrote, directed, and star in this film, and follow three friends who take a fun trip around the world, when something terribly wrong happens to one of the friend with a seemingly sexual encounter with a foreign woman.

Comic book fans, Dark Knight collectors, and DC fans everywhere can now speculate on how the young Bruce Wayne is going to pan out now that he and Selena Kyle have been cast for the Batman prequel series ‘Gotham‘ for Fox. Thirteen-year-old David Mazouz, co-star with Kiefer Sutherland in 2012’s ‘Touch‘, has been confirmed for the role of the young- eccentric-millionaire-orphan Bruce Wayne. ‘The Addams Family Re-Cast!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Mar 4th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

the-addams-family

Here is our fourth Re-Cast of the year, where if you are unfamiliar with our famous Re-Casts, we take an older film or tv show and re-cast it if it were remade today. And this week, we have chosen the iconic film ‘The Addams Family‘ to re-cast. There were no stipulations this time around, so if someone wanted to cast Nicolas Cage for every role, they could.. But after we finished the casting session, and finished our picks, I definitely want to see this movie. Of course, it’s always difficult to replace the original cast, but in this day and age of remakes, anythig is possible, so this is who we think would do best in these roles. This was a lot of fun. We will be posting some images of our re-cast for you to see in full on our FACEBOOK page, which you should visit to catch up on all the latest information. And don’t forget to visit iTunes and subscribe to our podcast. Enjoy the show.

Jana B. here,

bryan-singer

Bryan Singer is one busy dude in the entertainment industry, he’s known for the ‘X-Men‘ movies, ‘Superman Returns‘, ‘Jack the Giant Slayer‘ and of course he burst onto our radar with 1995’s twisted crime flick ‘The Usual Suspects‘ that made Singer and Keyser Söze common names. In addition to all the movie titles he has under his belt, he was also the director for the pilot of David Shore’s hit medical drama series ‘House‘ on Fox. Shore and Singer worked together to executive produce the accolade-accumulating series for the entire eight–season run.
