Fernando’s Review of ‘Labor Day’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 31st, 2014

Fernando M., Here…

maxresdefault

Jason Reitman, well known for modern classics such as “Juno” and “Up in the Air” takes a drastic turn with his newest film, “Labor Day.”  Though Reitman usually hits us with his own special blend of comedy and misery that is somehow equally lighthearted and cynical, you can expect none of that here.

Hi, Bryan Here…

labor-day-movie-photo-9

I had the great opportunity to talk with writer Joyce Maynard and actor Gattlin Griffith on their film ‘Labor Day‘, which stars Josh Brolin, Kate Winslet, and Griffith. The film was directed by Jason Reitman and I found myself entranced by the film as you can read my review HERE. We discuss the origins of the story, some of the fun things that happen on set, as well as some of Griffith’s favorite movies. He even said he wanted to star in a remake of one of the best 80’s movies to ever come out. Enjoy the short interview and be sure to see ‘Labor Day‘.

Hi, Bryan Here….

a-million-ways-to-die-in-the-west-neil-patrick-harris-poster

Seth MacFarlane’s new film has a trailer. His first feature film he directed was ‘Ted‘, and it scored big theatrically and on home-video. It was only a matter of time before the ‘Family Guy‘ creator and voice made his 2nd feature live-action film. ‘A Million Ways To Die in The West‘ synopsis is: Seth MacFarlane plays a hapless farmhand in the Old West who loses his girl (Amanda Seyfried) when he ducks out of a fight, only to be taught to shoot by the wife (Charlize Theron) of a gunfighter (Liam Neeson) in this Media Rights Capitol western comedy. This looks pretty funny, plus it has Neil Patrick Harris in it. The film is set to release May 30th. Enjoy the trailer.

Hi, Bryan Here…

theatre

Here is our last part of Podcast #21 of the ‘Multi-Media Men‘. We decided to something different and fun with this segment. We all pitched an idea to a fake investor to start our very own film festival. We had to discuss the theme of the fest, what would be shows, pricing, how long the fest would last, and other fun details. What we came up with was quite hilarious. Hell, one guy wants a weekly Nic Cage film festival. I’d buy that for a dollar. So enjoy the suggestions for our film festivals and let us know which one you would attend. And please, let us also know if you have any ideas for a movie festival. You never know, we might just sponsor your idea.

‘Serenity’ Takes Flight With New Comic Book!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 30th, 2014

Jana B. here,

Serenity

Serenity’…yes, THAT ‘Serenity’. Not the calm, peaceful tranquil serenity. Joss Whedon’s  space-western baby, ‘Serenity’. You can’t call yourself a proper sci-fi geek without quieting your outrage at the improper treatment of the genesis television show named after the beloved transport ship that is the Firefly named Serenity. For those of us that memorized insults in Mandarin – Fox programming execs are just BUN tyen-shung duh ee-DWAY-RO, which is to say “stupid inbred stack of meat” – Firefly is the greatest show that never had the chance to burn out on its own. Big nod of appreciation to this site for the translation and pronunciation.

Film Review: ‘Labor Day’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 30th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

labor-day-review-1

In a shift in tone and subject matter for director Jason Reitman (‘Juno‘, ‘Up In The Air‘), his newest film ‘Labor Day‘ is a sweet tale of love and starting over. Originally written by Joyce Maynard with a screenplay treatment by Reitman himself, this gem of a film is a slice of great pie. Sure, this situation would never play out as it did in the film, but is one that we would hope for. With a stellar cast that includes Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin, Tobey Maguire, J.K. Simmons, Gattlin Griffith, and James Van Der Beek, ‘Labor Day‘ is a holiday I’d revisit again and feel good about it.

Film Review: ‘That Awkward Moment’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 30th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

9d0fd19d-3d90-4482-b3e8-3a472c4d4da5_thatawkwardmoment

I really wanted to like ‘That Awkward Moment‘, but I never found myself enjoying the film, other than the sporadic chuckles that came once every twenty minutes. And even then, it wasn’t a gut-busting laugh. One of the producers of ‘Movie 43‘, Tom Gormican, wrote and directed this movie. Let it also be known that this is also his only movie credit other than ‘Movie 43‘, which is obvious after you watch ‘That Awkward Moment‘. This twenty-something romantic comedy tries to hard to be a Judd Apatow film, but lacks just about everything good from an Apatow movie. It’s a clumsy flick that is cliched at every corner with poor editing, a terrible script, and some mis-cast actors. I’m sure this raunchy rom-com will make a decent amount of money, but will be instantly forgotten.

Forest Whitaker Joining Liam Neeson for ‘Taken 3’!?!?

Hi, Bryan Here…

It’s official. Director Olivier Megaton and actor Liam Neeson will return for the third installment of the ‘Taken‘ franchise. Good news, everyone. The U.S. will be getting the seemingly cool werewolf movie, starring Jason Momoa, Lucas Till, and Stephen McHattie. It’s been quite a long time since we’ve received an awesome werewolf movie. This particular one is called ‘Wolves‘ and is directed by David Hayter. This is Hayter’s first feature film to direct, as he is normally a writer. Hayter wrote the screenplays for ‘X-Men‘, ‘X-Men 2‘, ‘The Scorpion King‘, and ‘Watchmen‘. I’m curious to see how this turns out. I’m a sucker for Werewolf movies. Below is the press release.

President Barack Obama, my man, talked about AMC’s hit show ‘Mad Men‘ on last night’s State of the Union address. That means that from this point forward, ‘Mad Men‘ is part of our American History and could be printed in textbooks in the future. That sound you just heard is the collective sigh from The Cumber-Collective all over the world, upon hearing their poster boy, Benedict Cumberbatch is going to be starring in ‘Blood Mountain‘. Nothing can make a fan girl squee louder than knowing that he is increasing his on screen presence with another movie. Not that it’s possible for him to be any busier than he was in 2013. Tale as old as time…no, not ‘Beauty and the Beast‘. I’m talking about the King Arthur legend. The story inspired such classic movies like ‘Excalibur‘, ‘King Arthur‘, and BBC’s ‘Merlin‘. There are some less classic offerings from ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail‘ and Disney’s 1963 animated ‘The Sword in The Stone‘. But I digress.

Mother Teresa Biopic To Hit The Big Screen!!

Mother Teresa

The almost-sainted Mother Teresa has inspired a lot of people to do a lot of things, take vows of poverty and selflessly give to the poor among others. Movie-making is one of the stranger things that people attribute to her influence. Keir Pearson is on deck to write a screenplay titled, ‘I Thirst‘. Pearson is making news as co-writer of ‘Cesar Chavez: An American Hero‘ set to release at the end of March of this year. “Keir’s presentation and his Oscar-nominated script of ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and his sensitive script for ‘Chavez’ made him the perfect choice,” said Tony Krantz.

Film Review: ‘Gimme Shelter’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 23rd, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

Vanessa-Hudgens--Gimme-Shelter-(2014)--11-720x479

Vanessa Hudgens has certainly come a long way since her days in the family-friendly movies ‘High-School Musical‘. She is fairly unrecognizable in Ronald Krauss’s film ‘Gimme Shelter‘. It definitely takes some gigantic balls to title your film after one of the best documentaries ever made based on the Rolling Stones, but like that one, this film too is also based on true events. ‘Gimme Shelter‘ is a rough movie to get through, but has a silver lining like a Disney movie. While some of the instances and pieces of dialogue are too “on the nose’ for my taste, I expect fans of Hudgens to turn a small profit this January on the indie circuit, if not to just see one of their favorite Disney stars do a role they are not expecting.

Bradley Cooper to play ‘The Elephant Man’!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 23rd, 2014
Jana B. here,

Elephant Man

Bradley Cooper is the Sexiest Man Alive. It’s easy to see how legions of fans fall for his rugged, classic good looks.  He just received his second Oscar nomination in the last 2 years for his role in ‘American Hustle‘ and last year from ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘. Cooper is turning his attention back to Broadway, now. It has been eight years since he starred with Julia Roberts and Paul Rudd in 2006’s ‘Three Days of Rain‘. The reason he is returning to the stage is to headline a revival of Bernard Pomerance’sThe Elephant Man‘. Cooper will play John Merrick,  the seriously deformed man John Hurt portrayed in the 1980 film version and Cooper, himself played in 2012 at Williamstown Theatre Festival. Where the film was heavy on prosthetic SFX, the stage production is devoid of any such prosthesis. The deformity is to be shown through physical acting alone.

In the world of makeovers they are generally a bad idea if you ask me. However, news of 1968’s Barbarella doesn’t strike me as a bad thing. It could be because there are a few people I really dislike in this world and Jane Fonda is one of them. I’m pretty positive that’s my whole reasoning for being ok with this remake. Can’t stand her, want to hit her in the face with a brick. OK, back to the news!  Amazon studios has taken on the pilot with a script by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade  (‘Skyfall‘, ‘Casino Royale‘). Word is the search for a show-runner is underway in hopes the show goes to series.

The Top 10 Gangster Movie List!!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 19th, 2014

Jana B. here,

GangsterListBANNER

Some girls are all into sappy romances or heart touchingly saccharine-sweet movies. Movies that sometime contain a troubled family learning to love a curmudgeonly, absent  grandparent, or a shattered family recovering from the death of one of its immediate member. Sometimes it’s a pet that waltzes, unexpectedly, into a tumultuous atmosphere that teaches everyone to love more before it’s killed in some unimaginative way.

I hate movies like that. I hate books like that and I hate songs like that. If a member of a family is killed, it better be a mafia family, and I get to look forward to their violent, bloody and evil retribution.  I am so fascinated by the inner workings of these ‘families’. I love to see the fronts they use to launder their income and imagine ways I would do it if I was involved.

Jon Hamm, crazy popular as Don Draper from ‘Mad Men‘ and Sandra Bullock, (‘Gravity‘, ‘The Blindside‘). Bullock is voicing the Audrey-Hepburn-esque Scarlet Overkill, as dangerous as she is fashionable, and bent on world domination. Hamm is voicing Scarlet’s husband as inventor, Herb Overkill. The film sees the faceless many minions competing to be a henchman for Overkill.

Showtime Announces Two New Series!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 16th, 2014

I love watching premium network series. It started with ‘The Sopranos‘. I was absolutely fascinated by how many times they cursed, how much violence it showed, and don’t forget all the T&A in the sex scenes! I should also include the story line arcs that I never wanted to end, as well. I just couldn’t believe this wasn’t a stand alone movie, but a series I got to watch every week! As time went by I had my attention divided to include ‘Big Love‘, ‘Weeds‘, ‘Nurse Jackie‘, ‘Dexter‘….and on and on and on. So I’m excited about Showtime’s announcement of two new series that have been picked up.

Hey guys!  Remember Jason Bourne?  Hell no you don’t!  At least you won’t give a crap about him after you watch JACK RYAN!  The director of “Thor” (Kenneth Branagh) shows us that he can again take really old source material and totally revamp it for today’s audience.  Jack Ryan is given about fifteen minutes of really effective origin story, and then a whopping hour and a half of non stop action.

Hi, Bryan Here…

jack-ryan-shadow-recruit-film-clip-a-serious-sniper

It’s been quite a number of years since we saw the character Jack Ryan save America from an impending doom. It’s been twelve years in fact since ‘The Sum of All Fears‘ where Ben Affleck played Jack Ryan. Before him was Harrison Ford in ‘Patriot Games‘ and ‘Clear and Present Danger‘, and Alec Baldwin played the hero character in ‘Hunt for Red October‘. This time around we receive a much needed reboot to the franchise, and let me be the first to say, this is a solid action spy thriller. I can’t wait for the sequel.

CW must be kicking itself in the balls for canceling ‘Veronica Mars‘ all those years ago, because with the success of the upcoming film, the tv studio has greenlit a spinoff series on the show. The new series will be on CW Seed, which is its digital platform and will not be aired on television, but rather on the web. Original series creator Rob Thomas is attached to make the show.

Wonder Woman TV Show Cancelled!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 16th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

wonder-woman1

It seems that Wonder Woman just can’t get any love these days. Joss Whedon tried rebooting Wonder Woman several years ago, but that didn’t go anywhere and the CW announced earlier last year that the DC superhero would get her own show called ‘Amazon’, which was a prequel in the vein of ‘Smallville‘ that showcased a young Wonder Woman discovering her powers.

Film Review: ‘The Past’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 15th, 2014

Fernando M., Here…

4.JPG

Such a strange and intriguing film.  “The Past” is barely a story, but more of a character study.  Director Asghar Farhadi creates a somber ambiance, and knows exactly how to lead his actors through it.  Bérénice Bejo, most known for her role in “The Artist,” is fantastic as an incredibly stressed and troubled woman, trying to find sense in the psychological mess that she’s in.  An equally strong performance by Ali Mosaffa, who acts more with the expression of his eyes than anything else.

Film Review: ‘Ride Along’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 15th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

20131107_ridealong_placeholder

Once or twice a year, we the people receive yet another installment in the form of a buddy cop film franchise where two unlikely people are paired up to take out the world’s most dastardly criminals. Very few of these movies are worthy of your time, while most of them are forgettable almost instantly. With Tim Story’s PG-13 ‘Ride Along‘, the latter is unfortunately the ultimate result here. It makes sense that Story directed this as he made ‘Barbershop‘ and the recent ‘Think Like A Man‘ film, which both ‘Ride Along‘ stars Kevin Hart and Ice Cube starred in. I can see this movie doing well at the box office this weekend, but I expect negative reviews across the board.

Martin Scorsese is a filmmaker of genius levels. Most people have seen at least one of his masterpieces and can tell you some of the elements he usually employs, like the criminal underworld, prolific use of profanity and Leonardo DiCaprio. Using his fail safe methods, themes and switching Robert DeNiro for  DiCaprio is a combination that lands him with award nominations and wins. He has directed many actors into the land of accolades as well. Coming high off DiCaprio’s Golden Globe nomination and subsequent win for his role as Jordan Belfort in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘.

Film Review: ‘Her’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 10th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here…

her_movie.jpg.CROP.promovar-mediumlarge

Usually, the month of January is reserved for films that tend to fall below the less than average category, and are almost always immediately forgettable and tend to leave a bad taste in your mouth like a caramel onion. However, with Spike Jonze’s original and fresh tale on the age old story of finding love in the most unlikely place, ‘Her‘ might be the one of the best films not only to be released in January, but in the last few years. I have no doubt that this beautiful and smart film will win tons of awards as well as make a decent sized dent at the box office by word-of-mouth.

Film Review: ‘The Legend of Hercules’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 10th, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

legend-of-hercules-image01

Renny Harlin’sThe Legend of Hercules‘ is the first of two 3D Hercules movies coming out this year. After seeing this movie, it’s difficult to realize that Harlin actually directed films like ‘Cliffhanger‘ and ‘Die Hard 2‘, because whatever directing chops he had in the action genre were not available anywhere here. This PG-13 film tries to be ‘300‘ throughout its 90 minute run-time, but due to the terrible script, awful acting, poorly choreographed fight scenes, and laughable special effects, makes it seem more like a made-for-tv-movie on the Lifetime channel.

Jana B. Here,

The_Boston_Strangler_Casey_Affleck_41024

Some people are fascinated by a moving film featuring struggling artists, sports stars, or the tragic events of the nuclear family. Some of us are enthralled by the twisted path of a demented and morally bankrupt serial killer. I fall into both categories, but I am really fascinated by serial killers. In fact, I wanted to be a serial killer tracker for the FBI at one point. Clearly, I was influenced by James Patterson’s Alex Cross novels. I did NOT like the movies based on his works, though. I did like Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross, but I digress.

Gerard Butler Joins ‘Point Break’ Remake!!

by Red Zeppelbon on Jan 9th, 2014

Jana B. , Here…

Point-Break1

It pains me every time I hear of an existing movie being bastardized with a revamp. The newest title to head to the remake guillotine is 1991’s ‘Point Break‘. I will never be a fan of twisting a fantastic movie from my childhood into drivel, reflecting the current time frame. ‘Point Break‘ adds salt to the remake wound, but also and more importantly, the Patrick Swayze wound. It’s like Hollywood is telling us anything Swayze did was crap. It’s a shorter list to name the movies the remake fairies DON’T have their meat hooks into.

Back in 1945, Alfred Hitchcock supervised and produced a documentary on the horrors of the Holocaust and focused on what went on at the concentration camps during World War II. However, Hitchcock decided not to release this documentary die to some political and social reasons. Not many people have seen this, and those who have, didn’t see the complete version, but the word is that people who have seen the restored project now, say that it’s pretty brutal.

Big news from Saturday Night Live. Sasheer Zamata is the newest regular cast member to be signed to the NBC comedy staple. There are six new comedians being added this year. Instead of focusing on Zamata’s laughable qualities, the focus is on her sex and race. There has been massive criticism that the new batch of SNL cast members lacks not only minorities, but specifically the inclusion of Zamata, who is African American.  Lorne Michaels has been looking into black female comedians for some time now. Kerry Washington’s guest hosting episode saw her run ragged running from skit to skit playing a number of roles from Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey and Beyonce. Of the six new comedians coming on board this season all are white but Noel Wells who is Hispanic-Tunisian. There are only 2 African-Americans already anchored in their positions on the late night sketch show.

Film Review: ‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 2nd, 2014

Hi, Bryan Here….

movies-paranormal-activity-the-marked-ones-2

One of the first releases of 2014 is the next installment in the ‘Paranormal Activity‘ franchise, with ‘Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones‘. Don’t confuse this one as the fifth film in the franchise as this is more of an off-shoot of the film series, but exists in the same world as the previous films. This fright fest or lack there of has gone a different route and will cater to the latino audience more than the other films did, due to a dominant latino cast. Director Christopher Landon, who wrote the last three ‘Paranormal’ films takes this chapter in a different direction with tone and style. I have no doubt this small budget film will make its money back times ten.
