The Greatest Trailer Ever Made is ‘Kung Fury’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 31st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

Kung-Fury.

It’s been a long while since something so incredible like this trailer for ‘Kung Fury‘ graced the screen. I sure hope some Hollywood badass executive sees this and gives these guys $50 million dollars to make this into a feature film, because the world needs to see this. It has dinosaurs, a giant Viking, Hitler, nazis, kung fu,  skateboarding, and much much more. That being said, the people behind this trailer have a Kickstarter fund to make the feature length film. They set the price at $200k, and within less than a week, they are above $300k, with 24 days to go. Go and donate to this movie. Enjoy this trailer by a company called Laser Unicorns. Consider me amazed!!

Bryan’s Top 15 Movie List of 2013!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 28th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

2013-best

And here we are, at the very end of 2013. What a year for movies. This was an amazing year for film. There were so many great independent films, documentaries, and movies that were just highly entertaining, that I’ve watched them more than five times already. As usual, as long as I’ve been doing this, my Top Movie list of the year is very different from most everyone else that has made a list. I don’t know why – well I do know, because I’m twisted and crazy. But how I base my list is a variety of factors, not ones that the Oscars base their opinions on, but rather a more humble and fun variety of factors. For example, did this movie make me stand up and slow clap, or did it make me slap the person next to me and yell ‘THAT WAS AWESOME’! It’s those kind of things. So without further delay, I present to you my TOP 15 list for 2013. Let me know if you disagree or agree, love or hate, or just want to say hi. Enjoy.

Film Review: ‘Lone Survivor’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 24th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

lone-survivor-movie-poster-8

Rounding out the end of the year is yet another survival story with Peter Berg’sLone Survivor‘. This intense and gritty true account of the failed mission of a Navy SEALs raid in Afghanistan packs a strong punch, even though you know only one person makes it out alive like the title suggests. The real life Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell is are lone survivor here, and we can compare this film to plenty other movies that take place in the Middle East where a mission has gone wrong, but Berg pulls out all of the stops with this story, and not only gives us an hour and a half of sheer brutality, but also gives us some great character camaraderie and tender moments to connect with these honorable soldiers. With the amount of movies out this holiday weekend, I don’t see this one trumping the box office, but might make a medium-sized dent.

Hi, Bryan Here…

“We’re gonna have the hap – hap- hap – happiest holiday since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny ‘fucking’ Kaye.” One of the best Christmas movies of all time is National Lampoon’s ‘Christmas Vacation’, and tis the season right now, we decided to do one of our famous ‘Re-Casts’ on this beloved and hilarious film. Now we all know this film was perfectly cast already, but in this time of re-makes, we might as well let the Hollywood execs know our suggestions if they so choose to remake this. So behold, the Re-Cast of ‘Christmas Vacation‘. Enjoy the show.

The Worst Films of the Year!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

www.indiewire

Tis the season to be merry is not on our radar, well at least not this episode. Instead of doing the best movies of 2013, we are going to let you in on the worst movies of 2013. Don’t worry, we will get to the Best ones next week, but let us roll around in the dirty and horrible films that came out this year, and boy, were there many. From ‘Grown Ups 2‘ to ‘Gangster Squad‘ to ‘Only God Forgives‘, there was plenty of slop to go around. A couple of the podcasters even thought some of the good movies of this year were some of the worst, which resulted in a fight to the death and friendships lost. Enjoy this lively episode of The Worst Films of 2013.

The Director’s Bracket Championship!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 22nd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

untitled

After 17 weeks, we have finally arrived with a the championship match and a winner for out infamous Director’s bracket. Back 17 weeks ago, we took a couple of days to come up with 64 of the best directors, and put them in a NCAA-style tournament bracket to see who would emerge as the best director of all time. We separated them into four categories, which were: modern filmmakers, dead filmmakers, genre filmmakers, and foreign filmmakers. Some fights ensued over the course of these 17 weeks, but we have all healed, and have picked a winner, which was a 3-2 decision. You can click the link below to see the bracket in its entirety. The final four were Steven Spielberg, John Hughes, John Carpenter, and Danny Boyle.

Welcome to 17th podcast. We have quite a show for you this week. Friendships were lost over this podcast. Blood was shed, tears flowed, and fights broke out. It got pretty nasty. Maybe it was because we had several glasses of alcohol, or maybe it was because it’s the holiday season, but whatever the reason, it was a lot of fun. As usual, we start our podcasts with a Top 3, and since it’s the holiday season, we are doing out ‘Top 3 Christmas Movies’. Film Review: ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 20th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

wolf-of-wall-street-trailer-06172013-014649

Even though Martin Scorsese is 71 years old, he has not taken a slower and more cautious path in making films or even the stories he tells. ‘The Wolf of Wall Street‘ is anything but cautious and slow. In fact, during its three hour run time from start to finish, only one hour seems to have passed by, as we are thrown in head first into a drug-fueled, rich hungry, and ultra luxurious life of Jordan Belfort and the sinful synagogue know as Wall Street. I have no problem with saying that this is right up there with the best of Scorsese’s films, and it might be Leonardo DiCaprio’s most intense, layered, and greatest performances yet. Hundreds of millions of dollars are made during the course of this film, and I’m sure the same amount, if not more will be made at the box office this holiday.

Bryan’s Film Review: ‘American Hustle’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 20th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

new-images-from-the-hobbit-american-hustle-and-the-monuments-men-142354-a-1375953418-470-75

Formally titled ‘American Bullshit‘, director David O. Russell has generated a lot of buzz for this film over the last few months. Coming off his Oscars for ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘ and ‘The Fighter‘, you might think ‘American Hustle‘ might be on par with his previous two films. While this movie is indeed great, it lacks any sort of depth or meaning that  Russell has embraced in his previous efforts. But what he lacks in depth and meaning, he makes up ten fold in acting, characters, and insanity. I have no doubt that this 1970’s comedy con-artist film will wow audiences with its comedy and sex appeal, but don’t expect a “think piece” here. With tons of other choices this holiday season, it’s difficult to say how this will do at the box office, but with an A-List cast and the amount of hype this has, I imagine decent returns.

Hi, Bryan Here….

modern-neverending-story-characters-1

Not sure if any of you have seen this yet, but I thought it was pretty cool. Artist Nicolas Francoeur has created a bunch of characters from the classic 1980’s film ‘The NeverEnding Story‘, as if the film were to be remade for next year. It’s not a crazy thought, and to be honest, I don’t know why it hasn’t been remade yet. Hell, it had a few sequels.

Fernando’s Film Review: ‘American Hustle’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 20th, 2013

Fernando M., Here….

american-hustle

I think i just got played.  David O’ Russell was shooting for his hat trick with ‘American Hustle’.  In 2010, we got “The Fighter,” an amazingly emotional story about loss and addiction.  2012 brought us “Silver Linings Playbook,” an incredibly off beat comedy littered with lovable yet slightly bizarre characters and a different take on a familiar plot.  Both of these films were highly praised and proved that Russell is one of today’s more impressive directors. Quite literally, a Disney movie about the making of a Disney movie.  One would think this would be little more than ego stroking ego, but actually, “Saving Mr. Banks” is a sweet film telling the tale of the production of a classic; the story of how Walt Disney bought the rights to Mary Poppins, and the story behind the iconic flying nanny.

Paul Rudd is Ant-Man!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 19th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

Paul Rudd

It’s official. Paul Rudd is going to be Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN. This is huge news. One of my favorite comedic actors is now in the Marvel universe and will probably be in the next ‘Avengers’ film. Rudd, who is mostly seen in Apatow films will be playing Hank Pym or Dr. Pym, aka ANT-MAN, who is a super-hero in the Marvel universe.

We knew we were getting the sequel, and now we have a trailer, and it makes me so excited to see that somebody is doing these films right. The new film, ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes‘ will release on July 11th, 2014 with Andy Serkis returning as the leader primate, Caesar. There is no James Franco in this one, but we get Gary Oldman as the leader of the humans along with Jason Clarke, Judy Greer, Keri Russell and Kodi-Smit McPhee. Matt Reeves is directing this sequel, which he directed ‘Cloverfield‘, so I expect great things here.

Film Review: ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 18th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES

Almost a decade later, we have received a sequel to the cult comedy hit, ‘Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy‘, which might have not performed all so well at the box office back in 2004, but has become an instant classic on home video. In these past years, we have seen nearly every actor from that film become super stars with a giant fan-base that has been quoting their dialogue from their film all those years ago. Well, we’re here with ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues‘, and I’m here to say that there are enough gut busting laughs for three entire feature films, and I expect this sequel to boast huge ratings and numbers at the box office come this holiday.

Film Review: ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 17th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

inside-llewyn-davis-oscar-isaac

The Coen Bros. have knocked it out of the park yet again with their latest film ‘Inside Llewyn Davis‘. Although, I don’t think this will have the big box office draw that ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?‘ or ‘No Country For Old Men‘ had, but I expect people to be talking about this film for months to come and singing the impressive soundtrack, which was produced by T Bone Burnett. In the scale of things, this is a very small film set in the New York folk music scene in the early 60s. In true Coen Bros. fashion, the mood is darkly funny, and follows a man, who tries to find himself later in life through his music. I can’t recommend this film enough.

Film Review: Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom’

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

la-et-mn-nelson-mandela-movie-release-date-201-001

There have been numerous films, television programs, and documentaries that have discussed the life of Nelson Mandela. Not too mention the treasure trove of books, biographies, and interviews you can read and watch detailing his beliefs and politics. And Justin Chadwick’s narrative film ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom‘ is yet another addition to the ever expanding universe of Mandela. Adapted by William Nicholson from Mandela’s autobiography of the same name, this two and a half hour film seems like a long slow walk indeed, with too much to cover and some cheese sprinkled here and there. Although actor Idris Elba’s performance of Mandela is one of the best I’ve ever seen, this long walk could have been better.

DVD Review: ‘Impractical Jokers Season 1’!!

Hi, Bryan Here…

NEjF8nL4M0YNmr_1

THE FILM

I had never heard of  ‘Impractical Jokers‘ before I was sent this DVD to watch. This first season debuted on TruTV, and features four best friends who pull pranks and jokes on themselves and the general public with hidden cameras. It’s like ‘Candid Camera‘ meets ‘Kenny vs. Spenny‘, and should give you and your group of sick and twisted friends some fun ideas to pull on each other or unsuspecting friends and family. At the end of the day, this isn’t anything new or original, but packs some good laughs and keeps you watch to see what they’ll do next.

Film Review: ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Dec 12th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

desolation-of-smaug-dragon

And we’ve arrived in the 2nd year of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy with ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘, and let me tell you, it’s a big improvement on the last film, which was released the same time last year. First off, we don’t have to spend a half hour inside Bilbo’s home with thirteen dwarves eating, drinking, and singing songs about washing dishes and Bilbo’s unhappy attitude. In this sequel things start off fast and to the point, which is sure to excite all audiences. Still, adapting J.R.R Tolkien’s less than 300 page novel into three separate films might be a bit much, but damn if it isn’t fun and highly entertaining this time around with a giant fire breathing dragon, some epic battles, a familiar elf, and an escape from orcs that I could watch 100 times in a row and never tire of. Just like the previous films set in Middle Earth, I expect another billion dollars for Jackson and co.

This is quite an interesting documentary by Israeli filmmaker Shaul Schwarz who follows police and musicians connected with the sadistic and violent Mexican drug cartel. The film is called ‘Narco Cultura‘ and is a scary, yet hilarious examination of the music that exploits the drug war in Mexico as well as the never ending pursuit of the drug lords by the Mexican police. I don’t expect this making anybody’s Top 10 documentary list, due to its repetitiveness, but should play well and might even make the rounds on VOD.

Well this couldn’t have gotten any worse. Not only are we getting a 4th ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ movie, but Brett Ratner is now set to direct the sequel. Why am I upset about this, you ask? First off, Murphy hasn’t made a good movie since 1996 with the exception of ‘Dreamgirls‘. Second, the last ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ movie was so awful that it might be the worst movie ever made. Hell, even George Lucas has an acting role in the last one. And third, Brett Ratner is making it, who might be one of the worst directors out there.

The script and especially its amazing A-List cast might draw out a decent crowd, but a sour taste might be left in your mouth after the end credits start to roll. Cooper’s first film was ‘Crazy Heart‘ and had some similar somber tones to it as this film does, but it’s nowhere near how brutal ‘Out of the Furnace‘ truly is. Hi, Bryan Here….

Only three more months until we have our very own fan funded ‘Veronica Mars‘ movie with the entire cast coming back to reprise their roles for another adventure. Back in March of this year, ‘Veronica Mars‘ creator Rob Thomas took to the crowd funding website, Kickstarter, and asked for money from the millions of ‘Veronica Mars‘ fans. The goal was set at $2.5 million, which would only be funded if that goal was met. In less than 24 hours, that goal was met and destroyed.

Movie Quotes

[Being told he can go home]
Private Ryan:
Hell, these guys deserve to go home as much as I do. They've fought just as hard.
Captain Miller:
Is that what I'm supposed to tell your mother when she gets another folded American flag?
Private Ryan:
You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she'd understand that.
