Re-Cast of ‘Reservoir Dogs’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 27th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

Reservoir-Dogs_510

Here is another episode of our famous RE-CASTING sessions. If you’re new to this podcast, here is where we pick an older film and re-cast the roles with new actors that we see fit. Since we’ve casted several comedies and one horror film so far, we though it would be fun to cast a drama-thriller, and what better film to re-cast than ‘Reservoir Dogs‘ by Quentin Tarantino. I know the cast already is perfect and we would never want this movie remade, but with Hollywood remaking everything today, here is our take on it. And to change it up on you, we completely re-cast all the roles with women. Enjoy this great episode. And Happy Thanksgiving!!!

So yes. A couple of years ago they did in fact reboot ‘Friday the 13th‘. You’re not crazy. But we live in a day in age now where Hollywood is remaking remakes. It’s sad and pathetic. That being said, I will take any ‘Friday the 13th‘ movie that is new in the theater. What can I say, I’m a sucker for Jason Vorhees hacking up dumb teens, even in space.

Film Review: ‘Homefront’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 27th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

homefront-james-franco-jason-statham-1

It’s quite strange for Hollywood to be releasing this type of film for families on Thanksgiving. ‘Homefront‘ is a violent and bloody action thriller starring Jason Statham and James Franco, with a small appearance by Winona Ryder. The cheesy script is based on a novel by Chuck Logan and was written by Sylvester Stallone, who seems to not have grown out of the 80s action films he starred in. While Stallone is nowhere to be seen in this movie, he does serve as producer and writer, as his handprints are all over this.

Have movie makers gone SO dry of original ideas that they continue to re-make perfectly good movies that aren’t even that old, yet? I take these re-makes personally since most of them are from the 80’s, which means I grew up on the films they destroy with a re-birth. Was Patrick Swayze really one of those actors that was so horrible, none of his work is safe from a re-make? Let us keep in mind that Swayze is now a verb, not just a noun. It takes an epic actor to make that kind of difference.  Not only did they have to annihilate the Red Dawn I grew up with, there are still projects  in the works that will destroy Dirty Dancing, Point Break and Ghost! I can  add to that list of Swayze comfort movies that seem destined for destruction, Road House. It’s the sad truth.

The 1979 hit that made Mel Gibson a superstar is being re-launched….as is everything that was once great, good or even mediocre. George Miller is back to direct the franchise that made his name 35 years ago with Mad Max: Fury Road. Mel Gibson will be back, as well, but not in the lead role. That torch has been passed on to Tom Hardy (Warrior, Lawless, The Dark Knight Rises). Joining Hardy are co-stars Charlize Theron (Monster, Aeon Flux and Snow White and the Huntsman)and Nicholas Hoult (Warm Bodiess, Jack the Giant Slayer and X-Men: First Class). This makes the first Mad Max movie since 1985’s Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.

Film Review: ‘Nebraska’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 15th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

nebraska-movie1

Director Alexander Payne sure has a knack for giving us quirky characters and showing us their relationships with their friends and families. With Oscar winning films like ‘Sideways‘ and ‘The Descendants‘, Payne is still in tune with his generational comedy routine, warts and all. This time around, ‘Nebraska‘ is on a more somber note than his previous work, but still manages to fill the theater with laughs as we witness a black and white screen of a family road trip film of sorts, that showcases a family’s appalling attitude when one seems to have hit the jackpot. With an impressive cast led by Will Forte and Bruce Dern, I expect decent returns at the box office, riding on the coattails of Payne’s previous work, however this stands on its own and should garner some awards come Oscar season.

Film Review: ‘The Book Thief’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 14th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

the-book-thief01

For some reason, 20th Century Fox wants to compare ‘The Book Thief‘ with the Oscar winning film ‘Life of Pi‘, because in the trailers for ‘The Book Thief‘, it says “From the studio that brought you ‘Life of Pi’. Sure, you can argue that both films come from novels, deal with survival of the most dire consequences, and have a ton of symbolism with life, death, love and God, but I don’t understand why you would want to compare the two, other than drive audiences to see the film, with the hopes that it will garner a decent amount of awards and a giant amount of cash like ‘Life of Pi’ did. Unfortunately, I don’t think ‘The Book Thief’ will accomplish these goals. It won’t succeed in these goals, not because of the filming, acting, or story. Those aspects are very good. It’s the execution, pacing, and the too many “on the nose” cheesy sentimental moments that ultimately make this film fall in the deep dark cracks of the cinema basement. That, and the lack of big CG effects, a beautiful colorful world, and a big tiger. Based on Markus Zusak’s novel of the same name, director Brian Percival (whose only claim to fame is a couple of episodes of ‘Downton Abbey), relies mostly on his cast to keep this film trucking along. This is not a happy movie by any means, and actually starts out quite grim as we meet Liesel (Sophie Nelisse), a young girl with her mother and younger brother, who board a train, but who do not know that their mother is giving them up for adoption. And on the way to their new family, the younger brother dies, as the narrator informs us over the grim images. In fact, the narrator is death himself.

Over the past couple of years, we have had a string of films based on the Beat Poet generation that spawned writers and poets Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, and Jack Kerouac. Film Review: ‘Dallas Buyers Club’!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

Jean-Marc Vallee’s ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ is a fresh take on the recognized AIDS plot, complete with a knockout script, and some amazing performances by Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto. This true-life narrative feature about Ron Woodroof, a Dallas native straight man who is diagnosed with HIV in the 80s is is not as down-trodden as it might seem at first glance. I’m sure McConaughey’s name and creepy weight-loss, which was widely reported in the news will draw out a decent crowd, but this little Indie film won’t be able to compete with the likes of superheroes, but it damn sure deserves it.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is leading the new action film from MGM, called Seal Team 666. I have to admit, this book is on my list of must-reads. It’s going to get bumped up to the list of must-read before seeing the movie, now. Johnson has proven himself to be a bankable asset for just about any movie he’s taken on. He hit fans everywhere with a jab by co-starring  in the addicting Fast and Furious franchise. He intends to double that jab with Fast and Furious 7, then plans to hit us with a TKO with Hercules. After the dust settles from the 10 count, he will already be in operation mode for Seal Team 666.

Here’s The New Trailer for The ‘Robocop’ Remake!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2013

Jana B., Here…

 RoboCop+remake

I just checked out the new Robocop trailer. “Why is America so Robo-phobic?” is the phrase I plan on working into every conversation I have for the foreseeable future. This phrase is uttered by the badly rugged Samuel L. Jackson. So far in the 2:26 minute long trailer we see some awesome CG effects which stands to reason if you’re watching a movie about a cyborg policeman, or any movie made in 2013. Long gone are the days of non-computerized special effects.

The Superhero business is a big money maker and anything associated with Marvel Comics is getting snatched up as quickly as if Speed Demon were picking up a littered yard. The geek-friendly brand has just closed a deal with media giant, Netflix, to produce at least four 13-episode series that will lead up to a miniseries of The Defenders.

Film Review: ‘Thor: The Dark World’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Thor-2_2709663b

And we’re back with the first non-Iron-Man sequel in the Marvel universe with ‘Thor: The Dark World‘, with the entire cast back ready for more saving the universe and defeating evil. However, this time around, the sequel felt uneasy and a little bit off, as it dragged in the mid-section quite a bit, or when Tom Hiddleston’s Loki (Thor’s adopted brother) is not on screen. Sure, the main event is Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth), but he seems to take a back seat for most of the film, as the co-stars really drive this movie as Thor smashes his hammer from foe to foe.

Hi, Bryan Here…

blockbuster-store1

It truly is the end of an era. I remember growing up and always wanting to go to Blockbuster or Blockbuster Music to rent and or purchase movies, video games, and music. But over the past several years, Netflix, computers, Hulu, iTunes, and other streaming services have made it impossible for Blockbuster to profit. Hell, even Redbox has taken a lot of business away from the once media giant. But alas, Blockbuster is finally closing down its remaining 300 stores by January.

Maybe with the success of ‘Django Unchained‘ and the Oscar buzz on ‘12 Years A Slave‘, The History Channel is remaking the 1977 miniseries ‘Roots‘, which was one of the highest viewed television broadcasts in history, and it still is with 100 million viewers. The History Channel purchased the rights to the story from Mark Wolper, who is the son of ‘Roots’ executive producer David L. Wolper.

‘Saw 8’ Is Happening!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 5th, 2013

Jana B., Here…

 saw

“I want to play a game.” With no direction, no story and no names attached, we can only announce that Saw VIII is heading back to big screens everywhere. The Saw franchise focuses on a human’s survival instinct and let’s not forget the torture porn aspect. The legacy of Jigsaw will no doubt be at play here. As to how that will come about is anyone’s guess.

It’s never too early to be talking Academy Awards Nominations. One of the categories that sometimes gets a bit overlooked is the Animated Feature Film category. This is one of the most important areas in my household as there are 3 children that drag me to see each and every, sometimes, pieces of animated crap. In order to be eligible for entry into the category, there are a few criteria that need to be met. Submitted features must fulfill the theatrical release requirements and comply with all of the category’s other qualifying rules before they can advance in the voting process.

background

Well, this comes as no surprise as the last Wolverine film has grossed over $413 million worldwide, that 20th Century Fox is already prepping another Wolverine film. They are so impressed by the last movie’s returns, that they are asking director James Mangold and Hugh Jackman to work again in the next film.

Amazon’s New Comedy Series Are Debuting This Month!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 4th, 2013

Jana B., Here…

 alpha-house-amazon

When I read the premise for Alpha House, an original series from Amazon for release strictly on Amazon, I felt like I was kind of familiar with the idea. Four buddies that, due to skyrocketing rental prices, decide to share a house. This sounds like a frat party waiting to happen. With a name like Alpha House, you’d guess to be right on the money, right? WRONG! This is a story about four senators faced with crazy rent prices in Washington D.C., and decide to split the cost. Which, incidentally, is something that actually happens.

Hi, Bryan Here….

John Cusack (Mike Enslin) and Samuel L. Jackson (Mr. Olin) star in Mikael Håfström's 1408

Remember that book Stephen King wrote a few years ago that had a couple of people trying to escape the zombie-like apocalypse, due to a mobile phone signal being emitted everywhere that turned people into zombie-like killers? Well, they’ve been trying to make a movie adaptation of that for years now, and once upon a time, Eli Roth was attached to it, but that’s no longer the case. That film and book is called ‘Cell‘.

The last episode of ‘The Walking Dead‘ left us with the prison under siege by a deadly flu virus and Carol as the killer of Karen and David. I see why Carol killed them for the greater good. Unfortunately, she was not able to contain the virus and a group is out in the middle of nowhere getting medicine. Lets pick up where we last left off.

I might just snap into a Slim Jim here, but I have awesome news. WWE Studios and Film Roman have teamed together to produce and finance and new web series called, ‘Camp WWE‘, which is a comedy series for adults that will center around what WWE wrestlers were like when they were kids. This sounds like all sorts of fun.

Director, Lucky McKee is at it again. This time, with a film called ‘All Cheerleaders Die‘, which is on the festival circuit right now, but hopefully gets a wide release sometime next year. And the trailer is all sorts of fun and is finally a cheerleading movie I can get behind. McKee (‘May‘ and ‘The Woman‘) teamed with director Chris Siverston (‘The Lost‘) for this film, which is a remake of their first short film of the same name.

dostoevsky The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show1

It looks like DreamWorks Animation wants more ‘Rocky & Bullwinkle‘ material, because they just announced that they will be releasing an all-new short film featuring the classic characters in animation form sometime in 2014. I’m willing to be it will be in March, since DreamWorks also announced that their new animated feature ‘Mr. Peabody and Sherman‘ will be released  then as well.

Hi, Bryan Here….

As we all know, J.J. Abrams has directed the last two ‘Star Trek‘ films, but earlier this year, we reported that he was asked to direct the upcoming ‘Star Wars‘ sequels, which he happily accepted. That being said, he has no time to do another ‘Star Trek‘ film in the near future, as he will be busy making the ‘Star Wars’ films. And as of the last 48 hours, Disney has told Abrams that ‘Star Wars’ MUST be released in 2015, which is putting this ‘Star Wars‘ project in rush mode, due to Abrams taking over script duties.

Film Review: ‘Diana’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 1st, 2013

Black Mariah, Here….

naomi-watts-princess-diana-ftr

The new movie, Diana, releases in theaters today.  The feature length film, starring Naomi Watts as the Princess of Wales, focuses on Diana’s romantic life after separating from Prince Charles. No matter how much you already know about Diana’s post royal love life, the movie Diana will take you on a journey oddly devoid of steamy love scenes and any convincing chemistry between the characters. Steamy love scenes are to be expected in a film based on a love affair, yes?  The story was already there; Diana and Hasnat, a real life Romeo and Juliet, complete with meddling families, two lovers who just can’t seem to seal the deal, and tragic death!  Somehow this movie managed to miss the mark, unless that mark was to make a dry romantic comedy.

Film Review: ‘All Is Lost’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 1st, 2013

Donna W., Here….

all-is-lost-trailer-0812013-144250

A man awakens on his yacht to find that it has crashed against a wayward storage tank and is now taking on water via the gaping hole in the side of his boat. The man, whose name we never know, is concerned but calm. He goes about the business of repairing the hole, pumping out the water, and assessing what’s left of his equipment, provisions and supplies. He has no radio and no means of navigation. He is far, far from any shore. Problems begin to mount. A storm. An injury. Things go from bad to worse.

Film Review: ‘Last Vegas’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 1st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

LASTVEGAS_MOVIESTILL-HI-1027133

Upon watching the trailers for ‘Last Vegas‘, a comedy starring several older actors, all over the age of sixty in a movie, very similar to ‘The Hangover‘, made me have my serious doubts on how good this could actually be. On one hand, I saw this film playing out for a crowd over 50 with cute humor that my mother and grandmother can laugh at, but not much else. And on the other hand, this could have just failed on every level, with poor dialogue, bad characters, and no real story plot, but rather just a muse to get some amazing veteran actors together to make a quick buck. Well, I couldn’t be more wrong. This comedy starring Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline, and Mary Steenburgen is smart, witty, heartfelt, and hilariously funny. So much so, that I expect great returns at the box office to see these five actors cut a rug and have a ball for two hours on screen.

Film Review: ‘Ender’s Game’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Nov 1st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

enders-game-3

Gavin Hood’s adaptation of Orson Scott Card’sEnder’s Game‘ is everything I wanted it to be and more. I’ll admit, judging by the trailers to this film, I didn’t quite see how this would work, and I even thought it didn’t look the least bit good. But ten minutes into the film, I knew i was dead wrong. And not only wrong, but this might be one of my favorite films of the year, and might be one of the best sci-fi films ever made. I know, that’s a strong statement to make, but I stand by it. This visually stunning film, along with its great performances and story have created one hell of a fine film, that I sure hope will make enough money to warrant a sequel. Because after watching this two hour sci-fi opus, I wanted more…immediately.

rumour-marvel-keen-on-aaron-taylor-johnson-to-play-quicksilver-136719-a-1370846169-470-75

Before, I get into the future project of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, a.k.a. Kick Ass, let me just take a moment to express how absolutely gorgeous this guy looks without the frizzy hair of his first appearance as the normal dude turned vigilante. I kind of slid my eyes past him because I could not see the hottie he had hidden. I just checked out a picture of him and was freaking gobsmacked at the boy looking back at me that will be filling my night time thoughts. Yummy. Now that I’ve stated the obvious but important point of his looks I can get on with his new project.
