Film Review: ‘Closed Circuit’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

628x471

Closed Circuit‘ is a situation where the actual trailer for the film is far better than the actual movie itself. With what might’ve looked good in a script from writer Steven Knight (Eastern Promises), the execution from director John Crowley made this courtroom thriller a sub-par addition to the genre, and ultimately forgettable. Despite its amazing cast of Eric Bana, Rebecca Hall, and Jim Broadbent, I don’t expect high returns at the box office over the holiday weekend.

Film Review: ‘Getaway’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

getaway-2013-selena-gomez-and-ethan-hawke-images-photos-pics-540x341

I expected something terrible from director Courtney Solomon (‘Dungeons & Dragons’), but nothing this bad. ‘Getaway’ doesn’t make the least bit of sense during its 90-minute runtime. You’d think that fast cars crashing into each other and destroying everything in their path would garner some thrills. Sadly, I was left bored beyond belief and laughing at this poor excuse for a movie.

Suzanne L., Here….

Screen shot 2013-08-30 at 6.17.30 AM

Documentaries about famous bands are not new. They offer a chance for fans to take a closer look at the artists they love, and the best ones provide illumination on what drives artists, the demons they face, and the attitudes and emotions that can tie a band together or ultimately break them apart. When Morgan Spurlock decided to shoot a documentary focusing on world famous boy band One Direction, he may have had the intention of capturing something great or moving, but he has instead produced an 84 minute commercial for the band’s upcoming tour.

Hi, Bryan Here….

 tom-yum-goong-2-poster

I am so excited that Tony Jaa is back on the big screen, kick ass and taking names. His recent directorial efforts were dull and slow for the most part, and I’m glad that he is back acting and taking out bad guys. ‘Tom Yum Goong 2‘ looks even more insane and awesome than the first film, which had some of the best fight choreography I’ve ever seen as you can see below.

Film Review: ‘One Direction: This Is Us’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 27th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

AA0052-003-r-8x10-jpg_155059

It never fails that decade after decade, we seem to have another generation of boy bands that rise to super stardom and the top of the music charts for a few years, then literally fall off the face of the Earth. We’ve had New Kids on the Block, N’sync, 98 Degrees, and Backstreet Boys to name a few over the years. These bands seem to mostly attract 11 year old girls and emotionally stunted older women. The same can be said with the newest fad in boy bands, One Direction. It was only a matter of time before someone made a concert film about them, but I never would have guessed that filmmaker would be Morgan Spurlock, the guy who gave us ‘Supersize Me‘, ‘Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden‘, and the hit series ‘30 Days‘. When I asked Spurlock about his career and why out of all the musicians and performers in the world, he chose to film ‘One Direction‘, he simply said, “I wanted to tell a story on a band who was nothing a year or two ago, but is now at the top of the charts.” I get where Spurlock is coming from, but it seems that he had studio execs hovering over him at all times, because this feels more like promo spot for the band, rather than a documentary.

Film Review: ‘You’re Next’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 23rd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Youre-Next-Masks-e1363694243952-640x336

A few indie horror-filmmakers lend a hand to this bloody, silly, fun B-movie flick ‘You’re Next‘. Director Adam Wingard doesn’t shy away from chopping faces or slitting throats here, and has cast horror-mates Joe Swanberg (V/H/S) and Ti West (The House of the Devil) in this blood-soaked romp. While it’s chaotic and stupid, this film still has a high splatter level and is very entertaining to keep horror fans talking. This is the perfect over-the-top horror film to jump-start the Halloween season.

Film Review: ‘The World’s End’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 22nd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Worlds-End

The third film in the Cornetto ice cream trilogy by Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost called ‘The World’s End‘ is as much fun and more action packed than their previous films ‘Shaun of The Dead‘ and ‘Hot Fuzz‘. This beer guzzling buddy movie garners gut busting laughs from start to finish and features impressive fight choreography, amazing one-liners, and one hell of a group performance by the actors. The B-movie homages and mid-life crises themes are done flawlessly with the highest of entertainment value that will make you want to watch this over and over again. I expect strong box office returns with this British extravaganza.

Steve Jobs was, regardless of your personal feelings about him, an innovator who literally changed the course of our nation, culturally speaking.  The man was an artist, a complex individual with an incredible story behind him.  Unfortunately, the film “Jobs” did not do enough to give Mr. Jobs a proper sendoff into history.

Film Review: ‘The Spectacular Now’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

 the_spectacular_now_36383

From the director of ‘Smashed‘ (James Ponsoldt) and the writers of ‘500 Days of Summer‘ (Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber) comes this charming little gem called ‘The Spectacular Now’. In a way, this is a high-school movie, but one that is wholly original and incredibly acted by its young adult cast. The film tackles a few big subjects, and not all of them are good, such as alcoholism, abandonment, and depression. However, the actor’s magical appeal keep us wanting more. This could be a huge hit in the Indie film scene, and I hope it does better with a wide-release, because ‘The Spectacular Now‘ is well…spectacular.

Film Review: ‘The Butler’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 16th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

THE BUTLER

Much like how ‘Forest Gump‘ was a feather in the wind, observing and interacting with major historic events through a few decades, Lee Daniels’ ‘The Butler’ uses a similar plot device as we see black man who worked in the cotton fields in the south and then ended up as a White House butler for seven U.S. presidents from Eisenhower through Reagan. With an all-star cast including Forest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, and Cuba Gooding Jr. amongst many others, and the subject matter of this fantastic film, I expect high returns at the box office.

Joshua Michael Stern’s biographical film on one of the world’s greatest innovators and creators of the biggest and most successful corporations offers a selective look into the life of Steve Jobs and his first twenty rocky years with Apple. Not only does this give us an informative and somewhat displeasing look of one of America’s beloved icons, but this journey with Jobs is also very entertaining. As ‘JOBS‘ is set to release on Apple’s 37th anniversary, I expect high box office receipts from Apple fanboys, admirers, and anyone who uses an Apple product.

Hi, Bryan Here…

And we’re back with a sequel to Mark Millar’s ultra-violent real-life superhero story with ‘Kick-Ass 2‘, based on the comic series of the same name. This highly entertaining sequel amps everything up to eleven (if you can believe that) from their first outing on every level possible. From the characters, to the violence, to the story, everything is toned up, bloodied, and kicks into high gear as Jeff Wadlow replaces Matthew Vaughn as director this time around. This sequel delivers the goods for fans of the first film and comic series and much more, with a high expectation at the box office.

lovelace d25 _161.tif

Here is the first of two films that is based on the porn phenomenon Linda Lovelace (Amanda Seyfried), who rose to superstardom in the early 70s with the film ‘Deep Throat‘. This biopic film of Linda Boreman could’ve been a disaster, but directors Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman made an engaging and entertaining look at Boreman’s life, even if at times her situations are difficult to watch. The acting is spot on for everyone in this film with a killer retro soundtrack. With a surprising wider release than I thought this little film would have, I expect a decent box office draw.

With the same look and animation as ‘Cars‘, that even takes place in the same world as it says on screen, Pixar’s name does not appear anywhere on screen. This little animated film was set for a straight-to-home-video release, but the powers that be decided they could make much more money in toy sales with a theatrical run, which seems to be the only driving force in this sub-par film. I expect a decent box office gross, but its blandness might make it suffer when it is actually released on home video.

Film Review: ‘Elysium’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 9th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

 elysium-6

Neill Blomkamp soon became one of my favorite directors with his 2009 political sci-fi film ‘District 9‘. He had Peter Jackson in his corner and created a realistic world infested with aliens. The special effects blew everyone away. Not too mention it put actor Sharlto Copley on the map. The story, acting, and action in ‘District 9’ was nothing short of excellent. However, with Blomkamp’s second feature film ‘Elysium‘, the same cannot be said. While the sci-fi flick has some good moments, most of the film is wasted with lackluster acting and storytelling.

In 2009, director Neill Blomkamp surprised the world with his film “District 9,” a sleeper hit that featured insights into racism, xenophobia, and segregation through a very creative science fiction setting.  Four years later, he again puts the sci fi spin into social commentary with “Elysium.”  This time around, Blomkamp has a big budget, big actors, big effects, but not the big impact.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this sequel was.  I really enjoyed the fact that they gave a little more back story and expanded on the characters history as well.  I saw this screening in 3D and I am not a fan.  It was fuzzy at times and really only the very beginning and a few scenes even called for 3D, so in my opinion if you have the option to see ‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters‘ in 2D, do that.

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Move over Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett has earned the Best Actress throne with this one. Woody Allen is one of the most prolific filmmakers in the last 100 years and despite his age, he continues to push out an original film each and every year. This latest one called ‘Blue Jasmine‘ fairs better than some of his recent efforts and leaves a longer lasting impression than most of his films. With one hell of cast that is comprised of several comedians, and Allen’s beautiful eye that captures the true essence of a city and harsh identity of his characters, this little film might be his best at the box office yet.

Film Review: ‘The Act of Killing’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

ActofKilling-Strangle

I’ve never quite seen anything like Joshua Oppenheimer’s documentary, ‘The Act of Killing‘. It’s extremely difficult to watch with its horrific subject matter. Maybe I’m naive, but I didn’t think this sort of thing happened 40 years ago, let alone that this atrocity is still happening today. Oppenheimer was born in my native state, Texas, but now resides mostly in London. Eight years ago, he embarked on a mission to Indonesia to document the victims of the government sponsored genocide of communists following the 1965 military take-over.

But instead of sports teams, we will be giving you brackets throughout the year related to films, tv shows, video games, and comics. The first bracket we have unveiled is the ‘Best Director of All Time’ bracket. It is set up the exact same way as a NCCA tourney bracket, but instead of teams, we have directors.

Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer Are Clueless Idiots!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

 lone_ranger_810

I don’t usually write open letters like this on the site, but I feel like I need to with the recent statements Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer made about American film critics. Their remarks about the press and journalists are asinine, childish, and unprofessional. I get that everyone is entitled to their opinion and are free to say whatever they feel like. But what Depp and Hammer said was wrong.

Harrison Ford Joins ‘Expendables 3’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Indiana-Jones-whip-007

I wonder if Han will shoot first this time, or if some joke will be made in the film of this. But yes, Sylvester Stallone announced via his Twitter, that Harrison Ford has joined ‘Expendables 3‘, but that Bruce Willis is no longer involved in the project. Stallone seemed super excited in that he wrote that he “has been waiting for this for years.” However, his next tweet might have been a jab at Willis.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Paul Reubens or better known as Pee-Wee Herman had some exciting news today. Though it’s only a tease, a big announcement is coming sooner than later. Reubens, who can be heard in ‘Smurfs 2‘ talked a little bit about that film and his upcoming Pee-Wee projects. We’ve talked about potential Pee-Wee projects before on the site, but this time it seems like they are finally happening and in the near future.

Josh Gad To Play Sam Kinison!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 5th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

 Sam-Kinison-headshot-2

Sam Kinison is coming back in a big way. David Permut’s project on the late comedian has been greenlit and is gaining full steam. Larry Charles is set to direct Josh Gad as Sam Kinison. Rich Wilkes wrote the script based on the book ‘Brother Sam‘, by Bill Kinison. This is amazing news, folks. One of the greatest comedians ever to grace the stage and make us laugh is receiving the proper treatment.

Diamond In The Rough: ‘Sharknado’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 5th, 2013

Wade D., Here….

 sharknado-poster

I would like to first state that I am extremely sensitive when it comes to discussing sharknadoes.  Being from Kansas, I am far too familiar with the devastation that can be caused by sharknadoes, and don’t think it’s anything that should be made light of.  So imagine my surprise when my DVR didn’t record a documentary, but the movie ‘Sharknado‘ that was straight-to-TV film for the SyFy channel starring Ian Ziering (‘90210‘), John Heard (‘Home Alone‘), and Tara Reid (famous for being a mess… and ‘American Pie‘).

Fernando Here….

crystal-fairy-2-michael-cera

It’s hard to describe a movie about an older and very goofy looking Michael Cera playing a drug obsessed twenty something traveling through Chile to find this crazy hallucinogen, while making an unlikely friend along the way and having a revelation somewhere in there. However, I think I just did.

Film Review: ‘2 Guns’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 2nd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

2-Guns-trailer

Surprisingly, I had a lot of fun with this action-crime thriller from Baltasar Kromakur, who previously worked on ‘ContrabandMark Wahlberg. I didn’t expect much from this seemingly stale film, but once the end credit sequence started rolling, I only could hope for a sequel and for Denzel Washington and Wahlberg to say ‘Yes’ to more films together, as their on-screen chemistry is the best I’ve seen in a long while. In what could be an off-shoot version of ‘Bad Boys‘, ‘2 Guns‘ packs a lot of explosions, gunfire, and laughs to garner a second viewing. The trailers do not do this film justice, and I’m hoping for a sizable dent in the box office this weekend with this entertaining “shoot-em-up”.

‘Jackass’ Presents ‘Bad Grandpa’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 1st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

image002

We’ve mentioned this project before on here, and now we finally have a trailer. So you remember in the ‘Jackass‘ films where Johnny Knoxville gets done up in Hollywood makeup to look like an old man? He goes around falling over objects in funny places or pretends to steal items from stores as this old man? Well that character’s name was Irving Zisman and he has a movie all to himself.
