Film Review: ‘Smurfs 2’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 31st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…

 smurfs-2

How can you not like Smurfs, whose sole existence is to live a peaceful life full of fun, dancing, singing, and love. Not too mention that they live in cool mushroom houses in the forest and all wear the same outfit. If you were thinking about what those little blue creatures were doing since the first film, you can rest easy, as life in the Smurf village has been Smurf-tastic. I’m sure the only reason we have a sequel is because the first film made over $560 million, and with this outing, you can expect the same visual pleasantries, but beyond a couple of lines of dialogue that garner a chuckle, I don’t see poorly titled ‘The Smurfs 2‘ playing to anyone over the age of five. That being said, I’m sure this blue sequel will smash the box office.

Diamond In The Rough: ‘Leonard Part 6’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 29th, 2013

Wade D., Here….

 4737

Leonard Part 6‘ is one of those movies that I remember watching as a kid, and even then I was wondering what the hell was going on.  I remember wandering through the video store and seeing this movie with Bill Cosby on the cover.  A spy movie with one of my favorite TV funny men, and I thought to myself “This is a definite rental!”  For those that are unfamiliar with this movie, let’s catch you up.  On paper, this movie sounds like it has success written all over it.  This movie was released in 1987, starring Cosby as the best CIA agent in the world that is pulled out of retirement to fight a unyielding crime syndicate in this spy spoof movie.  Sounds like a can’t miss, right?  It missed….bad.

New Column: Diamond in The Rough!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 29th, 2013

Wade D., Here…

 robot_monster

I love bad movies.  That is an extremely oversimplified, yet usual response I give to people when discussing film and cinema in conversation.  It is true though, but if you want to have a conversation about what I love we are really going to need to discuss it much further.  I think the best place to start is really defining what a “bad” movie is.  When I am referring to a bad movie, I am talking about those movies that are usually made with the best of intentions, but due to a lack of knowledge, talent, abilities, etc. they usually fall short of their intentions.  Sometimes these movies are mishandled from the very beginning; sometimes they are well done but just too bizarre to hit the mark.

Find Out What Kim L. Thought About ‘The To Do List’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 26th, 2013

Kim L., Here….

to-do-list-aubrey-plaza

The To Do List‘ is very funny and the trailers do not do it justice.  I was pleasantly surprised by how much I laughed out loud. The film is set in 1993 and follows a recent high school graduate, Brandy Klark played by Aubrey Plaza, who wants to be more experienced sexually before going off to college.  She makes a “To Do List” or as I like to call it a “Sexual Bucket List”.

Film Review: ‘The Wolverine’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 25th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

the-wolverine06

This second installment in a supposed trilogy on Wolverine is certainly a step in the right direction. Despite ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine‘ being a terrible mess of a film on all levels, it managed to muster almost $400 million worldwide. With James Mangold at the helm this time and leaving off the ‘X-Men‘ title, we have a decent attempt of furthering one of the most beloved heroes in comic book history. Leaving the CG effects on the back-burner this time around, and going with a hand-to-hand combat method with elements of noir and Kurosawa in mind, this ninja-heavy action blockbuster for Fox should garner appropriate returns.

I don’t understand all the hype around making new reboots or re-imaginings of the world of ‘Wizard of Oz‘. The last attempt with ‘Oz the Great and Powerful‘ was awful, as you can read HERE. ‘The Wiz‘ wasn’t so great, neither have the countless other versions been up to par with the exception of the dark and twisted version ‘Return to Oz‘. But out of all networks and movie studios, the SyFy network seems to be getting into the Oz business.

‘The Conjuring’ is Breaking Records!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

The horror genre is ruling the box office this summer, which is so cool. I’m a sick and twisted fan when it comes to horror, as I enjoy seeing every horror film, no matter how gory, terrible, or depraved it is. I live for that stuff. So, when I got the news that ‘The Conjuring‘, the new horror film by director James Wan has broken three records at the box office, I was giddy with joy. Why, you ask? Well because, this might pave the way for new and original horror films in our near future.

The first word that comes to my mind about this movie is… Heart.  Based on a true story of Oscar Grant, the 22 year old that was murdered by a police officer in the early hours of New Year’s Day in 2009 at the Fruitvale BART Station in the Bay Area of California, the story follows Oscar, played by Michael B. Jordan (Friday Night Lights) on the last day of his life and shows the ups and downs he faced as a young man and father trying to do the right thing.

Film Review: ‘The Conjuring’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 19th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

THE CONJURING

It’s been a couple of years since we had a great and pure horror film, capable of producing genuine scares. ‘The Conjuring‘ seems to have re-vitalized the genre this summer. Filmmaker James Wan brought us ‘Saw‘ and ‘Insidious‘, which both changed the horror genre when they were released. Now, Wan brings us ‘The Conjuring‘, where he set out to make an homage to the classic 60s and 70s horror films that rely on building tension and genuine scares rather than CG effects and gore that we have come to expect out of most horror flicks these days. The results pack a good and scary punch that box office receipts this weekend will score big with this frightening film.

Film Review: ‘Fruitvale Station’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 19th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

 fruitvale-station-trailer-05112013-112150

What a rough movie to get through. After the credits rolled and the lights came up in the theater, there was not a dry eye in the house. Instead of a documentary, we have a narrative account on the real life murder of Oscar Grant, an incident that occurred on New Years Night in 2009 that sparked large protests and riots in Oakland and around the country. In his first feature film effort, director Ryan Coogler takes us through the life of Grant in the hours leading up to his untimely murder. Major Hollywood figures have been involved in this case with Forest Whitaker serving as producer on the film and Octavia Spencer playing the role of Grant’s mother. This film needs to be seen by everyone and I wish I could buy everyone a ticket to see ‘Fruitvale Station’.

Film Review: ‘R.I.P.D.’!!!

I’ve spoken with many people about their thoughts on seeing ‘R.I.P.D.‘ this weekend, and 9 out of 10 of them have said it looks terrible. In addition, I’ve heard a lot of studio people talking how this summer blockbuster that cost an estimated $130 million won’t even top out at $15 million this weekend. It’s a tough call as several movies come out this weekend, including a horror film that’s been generating a lot of good buzz. ‘R.I.P.D.‘, which is based on a Dark Horse comic series was surprisingly a lot of fun. Sure, it was silly stupid fun, but none-the-less, entertaining.

Yes, if you remember, we are getting a ‘Godzilla‘ reboot, which will be loads and loads better than the 1998 film that starred Matthew Broderick, Maria Patillo, and Hank Azaria. Film Review: ‘Only God Forgives’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 17th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Only-God-Forgives-Red-Band-Trailer-You-Wanna-Fight

I’ll be the first to admit that Nicolas Winding Refn’s movie ‘Drive‘, starring Ryan Gosling was one of my favorite films of that year. It was original, fresh, had a killer soundtrack, and had a wonderful and colorful cast of characters. I own the Blu-ray, soundtrack, and even stickers from the movie. Needless to say, when I heard that Refn was making another film in the same vein called ‘Only God Forgives‘, I was excited with pure joy and couldn’t wait to see it. Not only was it going to star Ryan Gosling and amp up the violence and suspenseful situations to eleven, but it was going to take place in Thailand and pack enough blood for two films. Man, was I dead-wrong about this film and sorely disappointed.

Misty S. Delivers Her Thoughts On ‘Grown Ups 2’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jul 11th, 2013

Misty S., Here….

grown-ups-2-1

Adam Sandler, the founder of Happy Madison films, has used the same formula for every movie that he has ever done. He took some of his unknown buddies that have all started in his first movie “Billy Madison” and every movie since, combined with his ‘Saturday Night Live‘ buddies and throws in some big guest appearances for added entertainment to create a comedic movie that all will love and flock to go see in the theaters. Sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn’t. This time, though, it did better than I expected it to. ‘Grown Ups 2‘, the obvious sequel to ‘Grown Ups‘, came and delivered, even with all the press and hype to it. This movie is not really a sequel since it can be watched without seeing the first one, but when one does not know what to call a “sequel”, just add a #2 to it. Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock and Kevin James have the chemistry and natural banter, like they had in the first one, that makes the movie ebb and flow without hardly any slow or unfunny scenes to sit through. There are, however, the same jokes that you see in all of the Happy Madison films and even on ‘Saturday Night Live‘. This is the type of film that when you walk into it, you are already knowledgeable of what is going to happen.

Robots, monsters, and Ron Perlman. Oh my. Director Guillermo Del Toro has given us a movie that we’ve all wanted to see since we were five years old. In an action-packed and brilliant special effects film, we have giant 30-story robots fighting vicious mega monsters on Earth. Guillermo was the perfect person for this project as he is a fan of genre films and can tell a great story with flawless structure and good acting, while mixing in loud and vibrating action sequences. ‘Pacific Rim‘ movies fast and will keep you on your toes till the very end, and while this summer has proved that big budget action movies won’t always go the distance, I’m betting this one will.

Hot off the set of ‘The Descendants‘ with Director Alexander Payne and writers Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, along with their Oscar win, both Rash and Faxon get into the director’s chair for the first time with their incredible summer flick ‘The Way Way Back‘. The comedy duo pull triple duty on this film, serving as directors, writers, and actors, which is no easy feat. But they pull it off with grace, fun, and great comedy. Director Gore Verbinsky certainly borrows heavily from his animated Western, ‘Rango‘, along with some other choice films for his latest mega budget action adventure film ‘The Lone Ranger‘. In what seems to be a project greenlit only for the fact that Johnny Depp was willing to get in makeup and costume again and sport a new iconic character, this remake is deeply flawed and way too long. Film Review: ‘Despicable Me 2’!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

Despicable Me 2

It’s going to be difficult box office wise for ‘Despicable Me 2‘ to beat its predecessor, which made over $543 million just three years ago. The directors and writers are back again with Steve Carrell as the whacky former criminal mastermind Gru who we saw last time stealing the moon. How can one top that? This fun sequel may lack the heart and soul of the first film, but is still highly entertaining for both kids and adults with its amazing animated visuals, laughs, great voice cast, and those likable minions.
