Film Review: ’21 and Over’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 28th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

url

A lot of fun is to be had with ‘21 and Over‘ if you know what you’re getting into. Sure, you’ll hear from many people that it mimics ‘The Hangover‘, possibly to a tee, but in my opinion, I think this entertaining and hilarious movie stand on its own. ‘The Hangover‘ scribes Scott Moore and Jon Lucas get behind the director’s chair together for their first time with this comedy and they prove they have as much skill as Todd Phillips when telling a college tale about drinking and debauchery.

Film Review: ‘Stoker’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 28th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Stoker-1993581-header

Since 2003, Park Chan-wook has been one of my favorite directors of cinema, as I saw his film ‘Oldboy‘. I was in complete awe of that movie and immediately had to find out what else he had done. Upon some research, I ended up buying ‘Sympathy for Mr. Vengenace‘ and loved that flick. Since then I have tried to see everything he has made including ‘Lady Vengeance‘ and his vampire film, ‘Thirst‘. Now, all of these films have been made in Korea with English subtitles, but Park now has made his first North American film title ‘Stoker‘, and proves the prolific director still has what it takes to be at the top of his trade.

Cooper joins the villains Electro (Jamie Foxx) and Rhino (Paul Giamatti) to fight Spidey this time. As of right now, we don’t know for sure if Cooper will turn into a villain in this film, but rest-assured, it will happen either at the very end or in the third sequel.

Yes, it’s true, but it’s not all bad news. Niels Arden Oplev will indeed directed a reboot of the 1990 thriller ‘Flatliners‘, which starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, and Billy Baldwin. Hello The Walking Dead fans. I hope you enjoyed the show last night like I did. Even though there wasn’t a lot going on during last night’s episode, there was some pivotal character changes. Let’s get to it.  The show starts in the prison. Everyone is talking about whether they should stay at the prison or find somewhere else to go. Rick does not want to run and Glen is backing him up. Merle tells him that they are living like rats. He thinks they should have already left. Merle says that the Governor probably has scouts around the jail and will eventually try to starve them out. Hershel says that they should leave.

I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed the Oscars last night.  I thought McFarlane was great and funny and thought his bits were solid.  All of the musical numbers with the exception of the two 007 SONGS and the song from ‘Ted‘ was quite awful and not fun to watch. Although ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild‘ didn’t win, there was some well-deserved victories. We also had out 6th annual live commentary last night, and it was a great success. I want to thank all of you for participating. We look forward to next year.

This is way out of left field. Film Review: ‘Snitch’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 21st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Snitch-The-rock

I was thoroughly impressed with Ric Roman Waugh’s ‘Snitch’, but for different reasons than you expect. Inspired by true events like most movies these days, this particular film produces a sense of true fear and hopelessness rather than show cheesy light-hearted inspiring stories that we tend to see in these “true event’ stories. And Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson leaves his ‘The Rock‘ name at home and plays a real human being who is in over his head with some real bad guys. Not only that, Johnson proves that his acting ability is worthy of not a WWE Championship, but of an acting award.

I doubt anyone will listen to me, but if we all say something, maybe they will stop this madness. Why do I say this? Christopher Nolan’s third and final installment of his Batman franchise ranks as the best film in the series.  That’s difficult for me to say, as the first two films were so amazing.  Even with Heath Ledger’s iconic and eternal role as the Joker in the previous film, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ far surpasses anything my imagination could have hoped for in film.  Movies do not get better than ’The Dark Knight Rises’.

Hi, Bryan Here…

‘Ted’ is hilariously funny.  I didn’t expect it to be as humorous as it was, but I busted a gut from start to finish.  I’m not a huge ‘Family Guy’ fan. so I admit, I was a bit apprehensive to watch a feature film written and directed by Seth MacFarlane.  I was quite surprised as to how warm and witty it was.  After the first 15 minutes or so of seeing an animated teddy-bear come to life, I really didn’t see it as a teddy-bear, but rather an actual person.  MacFarlane captured a genuine and heartwarming film with an ultra raunchy and vulgar kick at every turn.

Film Review: ‘Bless Me, Ultima’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

I’m a huge fan of stories with magical realism in them.  One of my favorite novels I’ve ever read is ‘100 Years of Solitude‘, which exudes magical realism from start to finish. I think I am so fascinated by it, because I like to think it exists. That there is some magic in this world, no matter how vague or small it might be, helping us move forward as a society and as humans.  When I heard that Rudolfo Anaya’s  controversial novel of the same name was being adapted to a film, I was instantly intrigued. ‘Bless Me, UItima‘ is a wonderful coming-of-age film with fine filmmaking and at times was quite magical.

Film Review: ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 13th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

a-good-day-to-die-hard-official-trailer-3-movie

We’re back for another installment of the action packed ‘Die Hard‘ series, the fifth chapter in the series that has spanned twenty-five years. We’ve followed John McClane to the top of a skyscraper, 50,000 feet in the air on a jumbo jet, a cat and mouse chase around a metropolitan area, and even cyber terrorism. Prior to the screening, I even thought “Haven’t we already said all we need to say with this John McClane character?” Needless to say, ten minutes into the film, I found myself grinning ear to ear and holding on to both armrests ready for a highly entertaining thrill ride. ‘A Good Day to Die Hard‘ might lack in story structure, but completely makes it all up with its intense action sequences and two solid performances by Bruce Willis and Jai Courtney.

Hello Walking Dead fans!!! I don’t know about you, but I am super pumped that this season of The Walking Dead.  I cannot wait to see if The Governor fall this season or not. Let’s get to it.  The season finale left us with Merle and Darrell standing in the middle of a wrestling ring about to fight to the death. The Governor was standing with that sick smile on his face watching and Andrea was being held back to prevent her from busting in on it.  The show starts with the continuation of that scene. Andrea is pleading with the Governor to stop the fight because Daryl is her friend. The Governor says that it’s not up to me anymore, the people have spoken. The Governor tells Merle that it is brother against brother and to fight to the death. Merle states that his loyalty lies with the town and begins to beat on Daryl. Walkers are now brought out and when Merle had Daryl on the ground, he tells him to follow his lead and that he is going to get them out of the town. Rick and Maggie then appear and begin to shot out the lights and at people. Rick throws a gas bomb and Daryl and Merle get away. Andrea gets on her knee and sees the fall of the town while The Governor watches Merle and Daryl leave.

Film Review: “Side Effects”

by Woozie on Feb 8th, 2013

Hi, Suzanne here,

Screen shot 2013-02-08 at 12.28.47 AM

In what he claims to be his final film, director Steven Soderbergh delivers a solid, suspenseful story that still delivers amusing moments. Side Effects ponders our society’s dependence on psychiatric medications but binds the plot in a story of homicide, blackmail, and intrigue. If it is his last film, the storyline, acting, and film stand up against some of Soderbergh’s best. It wouldn’t be a bad one to end on.

Hi, Bryan Here….

There hasn’t been a decent comedic road trip movie since Todd Phillips‘ 2000 comedy, ‘Road Trip‘. And with the recent ‘Guilt Trip‘ flick not performing well, I had some hope that ‘Identity Thief‘ would spark another engine in the comedy genre. Unfortunately, due to the scripted laughs, and unlikable main character, it falls it bit flat. I have no doubt though that the talented Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman will bring in big numbers at the box office, however the word will spread quickly that ‘Identity Thief’ is forgettable and ultimately unsatisfying.

I cannot wait to see this. SXSW 2013 just announced their 2013 Midnight Screening lineup, and low and behold, a film was selected called ‘Big Ass Spider‘.  What is ‘Big Ass Spider‘ about?  Well, it’s about a ‘Big Ass Spider‘ that kills people in a big city. And I’m talking like ‘Cloverfield‘ big. This is going to be a riot.  From the trailer, it looks to have a decent cast of people you would recognize, including Troma master Lloyd Kaufman. In parts of the trailer, it looks like some of the visual effects are on the same level as ‘Birdemic‘.  Now I’m not sure if this is a final cut, but either way, count me the fuck in.

The Wachowski siblings are hard at work on their new sci-fi epic ‘Jupiter Ascending‘, and they have cast Sean Bean to star in their new flick. Good news, everyone!  Aaron McGruder is making a live action version of his hilarious and hit cartoon series ‘The Boondocks’, which will center around Uncle Ruckus, who is one of the funniest characters ever to grace a screen. McGruder will write and direct this project if it gets the greenlight and plans on being an R rated comedy for the silver screen. Oh man, if Uncle Ruckus graces the big screen across America, I’ll be the happiest guy in America. Right now, the project has a Kickstarter Fundraising campaign to help fund the film.

Hi, Bryan Here…..

Blair-Underwood

NBC is brining back ‘Ironside‘ to the small screen with Blair Underwood playing Robert T. Ironside, who was originally played by Raymond Burr. If you remember, ‘Ironside‘ was a TV series from that aired from 1967-1975 and focused on a sardonic and intelligent detective who is confined to a wheelchair, and just happens to solve some of the most bizarre crimes in San Francisco.

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 4th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

original

‘We’ve written about the possibility of a ‘Zombieland‘ sequel before, and even it becoming a tv series, which was the original intention of the original before it became a feature film. Well now, Amazon is looking to develop the new series based on the hit movie. They are in talks right now with Sony for the rights to the project. The project is expected to be a 30 minute comedy horror series with either a pilot episode first or a full on series.  Either way, I’m happy about this.

Did you See That ‘Under the Dome’ Promo??

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 4th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

 under-the-dome-640x386

Last night’s Super Bowl was very interesting. It was a decent game, but the commercials were sub-par this year with the exception of maybe one or two, and the half-time show with Beyonce was one of the fucking worst things I’ve ever seen or heard. However, the movie trailers were kick-ass, so there’s that. However, one promo had me very giddy.  I’m of course talking about the creepy and interesting trailer for Stephen King’s novel ‘Under The Dome‘. Yes, they are making that into a series, and I can’t wait.

Hi, Bryan Here….

jeff and john

Amazon is looking to get into the original programming, much like Netflix has done. With the announcements of Netflix’s new season of ‘Arrested Development‘ and their new series ‘House of Cards‘ starring Kevin Spacey and costin $3 million an episode, I sure think Amazon has some tough work ahead of them if they want to compete. And I think by this news, they are off to a good start.

Hi, Bryan Here….

fright-night-colin-farrell

Colin Farrell is in final talks to join Anthony Hopkins in a new supernatural thriller titled ‘Solace‘, which Afonso Poyart will helm. The project will begin shooting in May and has a whopping four different writers, which has me leery of how good this could be. The writers are Peter Morgan, Ted Griffin, James Vanderbilt, and Sean Bailey, which Bailey is the current president of production over at Disney.

Here are the 2013 Super Bowl Movie Trailers!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 3rd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Iron-Man-31

It’s Super Bowl Day, meaning us fellow movie geeks are only interested in a couple of things. 1) Movie trailers. 2) The commercials. 3) Food. 4) The Puppy Bowl. Not necessarily in that order. I mean, the Puppy Bowl is really the only time out of the year where the entire world is at peace and everything is a bit brighter. But, this isn’t about the Puppy Bowl.  This is about some really amazing movie trailers that will be shown during the big game this year.  We can expect a new ‘Iron Man 3‘ trailer, a new ‘World War Z‘ trailer, ‘The Lone Ranger‘ trailer, and another ‘Oz‘ trailer.  Plus some other surprises.  Below are the trailers you can see before anyone else does.  Enjoy.

Lara Croft:
What do you mean? You're the guide.
Terry Sheridan:
I mean, when you think back on the vast scheme of your hugely adventurous life... where do I fit in? Was I the love of your life, or just another bump on the road? Was I time well spent? Four months? More good than bad? Come on, it had to be more than that, am I right?
Lara Croft:
You're right. It was five months.
