Hi, Bryan Here…

Comedy Central Roast Of Roseanne Barr - Arrivals

WOW.  I didn’t expect all of these articles focusing on Roseanne today. I guess Barr is back in business.  NBC recently passed on her comedy pilot ‘Downwardly Mobile‘, but has just inked a deal with Universal Television to develop, star, and produce a new comedy for NBC. Barr will re-team with producer Steven Greener for this upcoming project.  Both Greener and Barr worked on her reality show ‘Roseanne’s Nuts‘, which centered around her actual nut farm.

Hi, Bryan Here….

new-uk-poster-for-warm-bodies-124023-1000-100

Jonathan Levine’s adaptation of Isaac Marion’sWarm Bodies‘ focuses more on an undead romance than any political or social issues, with having just enough blood and guts for genre fans.  I have to say that this zombie flick ranks right up there with some of the best living dead films ever made.  It’s original, fresh, and has an amazing soundtrack.  I have no doubt that this lovable zombie movie will make tons of money at the box office.

Film Review: ‘Bullet to the Head’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 31st, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

url

Sylvester Stallone and director Walter Hill abandon their walking canes to make one brutal action film set in New Orleans called ‘Bullet to the Head‘, even though it’s silly, brainless, and laughable. This action flick packs a hard punch, but fails in story, character, acting, and dialogue.  But what do you expect from two guys who are around 70 years of age, who are making and starring in films that involve a climax with battle axes.

The Rock is the new WWE Champion, and this guy and I are pissed off about it – CLICK HERE TO SEE HOW PISSED OFF WE ARE!!

Yes, The Rock was my favorite WWE performer in wrestling’s heyday at the turn of the millennium. But in 2003, Dwayne Johnson left WWE to become the thinking man’s Vin Diesel. He used his success as a WWE Superstar to springboard into movies, and that’s great. But CM Punk doesn’t want to springboard anywhere. CM Punk wouldn’t trade the WWE Championship for a featured role in the Fast and Furious franchise, and no one looks at CM Punk and thinks “Oh yeah, the strong man’s William H. Macy.”

Star Jon Hamm will direct the second episode of the season.  I can’t wait for this season.  We previously reported that the first episode of the season will partly take place in Hawaii, which will be cool to see what they do with the set pieces there. I’m not too surprised at this and congratulate everyone involve with this, but this happend, because of the extra charges for 3D and the 48 fps.  I’m curious to see how much all three ‘Lord of the Rings’ films would have made if they charged what they did with ‘The Hobbit‘ back then.  So far, ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘ has made over $940 million worldwide since it debuted in theaters December 14th.  This is more than ‘The Two Towers‘ and ‘Fellowship‘.

‘The Evil Dead’ Receives an NC-17 Rating!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 28th, 2013

Hi Bryan Here….

evil-dead-2013-1

The remake of ‘The Evil Dead‘ officially received an NC-17 rating, which by all of the reports we’ve written about and the producers talking how intense it is, I can believe it.  And when I saw the red band trailer, it completely confirmed it.  This remake is going to be one scary motherfucker. Unfortunately, if a film wants to make any sort of money at the box office, it can’t be rated NC-17, as most theater chains won’t show NC-17 movies.

‘South Park’ Reduces Its Episode Order!!

Some good news and bad news here.  For the past sever years, ‘South Park‘ on Comedy Central has scheduled their new seasons to air in a unique way. Each year we get 14 new episodes of ‘South Park‘, split into 7 episode half seasons.  There is really no reason for this, it’s just how Trey Parker and Matt Stone choose to do it. However now, beginning September 25th, South Park will air 10 new episodes in a row for their full season, cutting a whole 4 episodes per year.

Film Review: ‘Hansel and Gretel’

by Woozie on Jan 25th, 2013

Hi, Suzanne here,

Screen shot 2013-01-25 at 7.20.46 AM

Most people hold special nostalgia for the fairytales they grew up with, making new spins on these classic stories difficult to handle. Many fail by adding too much to the original story, and while Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters doesn’t really succeed, it actually does well to not take itself too seriously and pay homage to the tale, using it as a launchpad for a continuation of the gruesome Grimm Brothers tale. Though not a movie that will become anyone’s favorite or have much of a shelf life past 2013, it’s a good time for those who like to enjoy rolling their eyes at camp movies.

Film Review: ‘West of Memphis’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 24th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

west-of-memphis-documentary

I’ve been following this case ever since HBO aired the first ‘Paradise Lost‘ film in 1996. I was 15 then, and at the age, I was outraged and angry at how the justice system was working in Arkansas. I couldn’t believe that these people could convict three innocent young men with no evidence to life in prison, with one receiving the death penalty. Needless to say, over the years, i have researched and tried to help any way that I could to this case by sending emails and letters and really anything I could do in my power to help free the West Memphis 3. And fortunately, there were two more sequels done by the original team who made ‘Paradise Lost‘, which shed new light on the convictions. However, now, director Amy Berg delivers ‘West of Memphis‘ with the help of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, which offers many new insights and interviews for the audience who have followed this case from the beginning, while letting newcomers in easily.  It’s one of the better documentaries ever made.

Quartet‘ marks the directing debut for Dustin Hoffman, who is now five years shy of 80, and the two make a great pairing, just like  a good wine and cheese. Hoffman took his cues from Ronald Harwood’s play and from a documentary from the 80s that showcased a retirement home for famous musicians and singers.  With its stellar cast, charming characters, witty dialogue, and amazing music ranging from The Mikado to the Rigoletto, ‘Quartet‘ is not to be missed.

James Franco will do just about anything in life.  It’s insane to think about.  I mean, this year he has a few films on the table.  One being the epic Sam Raimi directed ‘Oz the Great and Powerful‘, which will cater to everyone.  But then he has a few gay and or porn related films on the chopping block too, which are ‘Kink‘, ‘Lovelace‘, and ‘Interior Leather Bar‘. Let’s not forget the film ‘Spring Breakers‘, where he plays a drugdealing killer named Alien.  Oh yeah, and he is on a daytime soap opera too when he is not hosting the Oscars or winning awards, or going to school, or acting in pot smoking comedies with his friends.  The guy is an all around huge talent.  It’s very impressive.

Film Review: ‘The Last Stand’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 17th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

background1

Arnold Schwarzenegger once promised us he’d be back.  Well, he completely delivered on that promise.  It’s been over 9 years since Arnold has headlined an action film, the last being ‘Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines‘.  And now, Arnold is back with top billing in an action film.  The question is, does he still have same chops and draw that he did a decade ago? With its paint-by -the-number plot line and a 65 year old Schwarzenegger, you might think the worst.  However, the ‘R’ rated film, while a bit slow in the beginning, takes off with huge action beats and a plethora of violence, mixed with a bit of comedy, making it a lot of fun to watch and a decent welcome back party for Schwarzenegger.

Film Review: ‘Broken City’

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 17th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

Broken City Movie

I was majorly impressed with Allen Hughes of the Hughes brothers ‘Broken City‘. I’ve seen a lot of political crime dramas before, but none like this.  This particular story dives into the deep dark corners of politics and the police force in New York City at the end of a big mayoral election. I’m calling it now. Brian Tucker’s debut screenplay deserves at least an Oscar nomination for next year.  This multi layered drama and its intense characters made this film shine above the rest in its genre.

I have been a huge fan of Trey and Matt’s for many many years now.  They rose to fame with their hit show ‘South Park‘, and after I viewed that, I immediately had to find out what else they did.  I found our about their first film ‘Cannibal the Musical‘ and ‘Orgazmo‘, which I am happy to say that I own both those films and watch them often.  And each filmmaker in their lives at one point or another, or for many all of the time have to deal with creative control from studio execs on their own artistic work.  I’ve been there before and it is a nightmare.  A nightmare that takes the fun and passion out of your work.

Zack Snyder, the director behind ‘Watchmen‘, ‘300‘, ‘Sucker Punch‘, and the upcoming ‘Man of Steel‘ film has said he does not want to  direct the next installment of the ‘Star Wars‘ franchise.  However, he is developing a separate project of the ‘Star Wars‘ franchise in the same universe for Disney and Lucas Film, although not directly a part of the next ‘Star Wars‘ film according to Vulture.  It is supposed to be a film about the Jedi and will be loosely based on Akira Kurosawa’sSeven Samurai‘ film from 1954.

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Favorite Movies!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 14th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

arnoldschwarzenegger

Like most of us, I grew up watching Arnold Schwarzenegger films, which I loved them all.  I would see every new Schwarzenegger film with my dad the day it came out.  It was like a tradition.  From the ‘Terminator‘ films to ‘Predator‘, ‘Twins‘, and all the way up to ‘The 6th Day‘. Enjoying for the most part, all of the films in their own unique way. Needless to say, Arnold has been in my life since I was little, if were on the television, the big screen, or in the form of action figures and comics, his characters have always been there.

Hi, Bryan Here….

globes-drink

The Golden Globes were last night and Tina Fey and Amy Poehler killed it. They were amazing.  Even former president Bill Clinton showed up to talk about Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln‘.  Even though I really liked the film ‘Argo‘, I was shocked when it won best film and director for Ben Affleck. I was happy to see ‘Django Unchained‘ win for best supporting actor for Christoph Waltz and screenplay for Tarantino. If this is any pre-cursor to the Oscars, I’d be completely let down if ‘Argo‘ takes it all.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a great film, but not the best film of the year.  I expect it to and want it to win the best adapted screenplay.  Just my opinion.  Below are the full results from last night’s show.

One of my favorite shows is almost back for a third season.  I’m of course talking about HBO’sGame of Thones‘, which is set to premiere March 31st.  There isn’t too much to see here, but we get the three-eyed crow and tons of landscapes.  What a tease HBO.  Can’t wait for a full trailer.  Can’t wait to see the zombies next season and hopefully Joffrey will meet his doom this coming season.  Enjoy the trailer below.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Frankenweenie 3D’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 11th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here…..

91MXDQLvk6L._AA1500_

I was much impressed with Tim Burton’s remake of his own short-fil of the same title, ‘Frankenweenie’, about a boy who brings back to life his dead dog in the vein of Frankenstein.  Burton really has made much of any original film in the last ten years, besides ‘Big Fish’, and in my opinion, his remakes aren’t good, but with this one, it seemed like a return from the director I grew up with and learned to love, despite my loathing of his remake films.  ’Frankenweenie’ was very entertaining and a lot of fun.

The Black Keys To Perform At The Grammys!

Hey rock and roll fans, Napkin Art here…

It’s that time of year again. The 55th Grammy Awards are happening on February 10, 2013, and the list of performers for the evening are starting to trickle in. You may have already seen the list of nominees, which is a slight improvement from past award ceremonies, but let’s hope this year’s performers won’t disappoint.

The only bands we give a damn about who are on the list of performers (so far) is The Black Keys and UK darlings, Mumford & Sons, who I’m sure, will be rocking the tunes they’ve been nominated for (The Black Keys’ “Lonely Boy” for ‘Record of the Year’, while the two face off for ‘Album of the Year’ nods, as well). Rihanna and Taylor Swift were also tapped to perform at the ceremony (yawn.) Hopefully, Jack White, who is also up for ‘Album of the Year’ nods for his best-selling debut LP, “Blunderbuss,” will also get tapped to perform. You know his performance alone will make The Grammys worth watching alone. Remember “Seven Nation Army” from the 46th Annual Grammy Awards?

What performers are you hoping to catch live at The Grammys this year?

Film Review: ‘Gangster Squad’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 10th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

gangster-squad_2012-en-2-1280x851

Gangster Squad‘ lacks depth, character, and mild storytelling, but with its amazing cast of actors, over-the-top violence, and cartoony vibe, I left the theater highly entertained.  Instead of playing out like a true noir gangster film from the 40s, director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland) has gone the route of making this gangster film like and R rated ‘Dick Tracy‘ mixed with a Saturday morning cartoon, which isn’t necessarily bad, but instead of getting story and character, we get blood and guts.

‘Film Review: ‘A Haunted House’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 10th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

A-Haunted-House-585x370

I’ll be honest, I was dreading going to see this film, despite its trailer looking decent.  I mean, how often have we not laughed at recent comedy films with a Wayans brother attached to it.  Back several years ago, I’m sure we would all agree they were making some of the funniest films out there, but as of recent, their movies have been lacking.    But I’m very happy to say that after I walked out of the theater from viewing ‘A Haunted House‘, my cheeks  hurt from laughter.  Yes, it’s silly, stupid, and insane, but man, I laughed from start to finish, which is rare. I can easily say that ‘A Haunted House‘ is the funniest film I’ve seen since ‘Ted‘.

Well, I guess Spielberg won’t be directing ‘Interstellar‘ now.  Since Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy his behind him now, it seems he has found his next film.  The movie in question is a mega sci-fi epic titled ‘Interstellar‘, which we hear he is in talks to direct and produce.  The story centers on a group of explorers who travel through a wormhole to other times and dimensions.  At one point, Steven Spielberg was attached to direct, but now it is unknown if he will take on a producer credit only.

robopocalypse

Here is a bit of unfortunate news.  Spielberg has been working on his next directorial effort on the heels of his award winning film ‘Lincoln‘, which is an “end of the world’ type of scenario called ‘Robopocalypse‘.  That film has been put on an indefinite hold, according to a source close to the project.  The film would center on the destruction of the human race caused by a robot uprising.  And the film was an adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s novel of the same name.

Check Out the Trailer for ‘The Last Exorcism 2’!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

Now we have a trailer.  Last week, we had the poster.  So instead of the found footage angle, we get a straight narrative film and it looks decent enough.  I really enjoyed the first film a lot, and I hope they will have the same momentum with this sequel.  Hopefully this doesn’t go the way ‘Blair Witch‘ did, because these two sequels are very similar in terms of style.  Whatever the case may be, I’m up for another exorcism and Eli Roth does some good producing.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Prometheus’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

51LgMTLgjVL

“In space no one can hear you scream.”

We have all been hearing about a movie called ‘Prometheus’ for sometime now, and all of us fans have been trying to piece the puzzle together on what it has to do with Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ film.  Since Scott directed ‘Prometheus’ and the original ‘Alien’ film, there has to be some sort of connection from what we have seen from the trailers, right?  The filmmakers told us that ’Prometheus’ would be a prequel to the ‘Alien’ film.  After seeing ’Prometheus’, I can say that it’s a very early prequel.  I’m  certainly happy Scott returned to this universe, because the ‘Alien’ franchise has been in a state of decay for a number of years starting with the 4th installment and then onto the ‘Alien vs. Predator’ series.  So, I was truly hoping to get an original film, but with strong ties to the ‘Alien’ franchise.  The question is, did it work?

Film Review: ‘Not Fade Away’!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 8th, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

David Chase, mostly known for being the creator and show-runner on HBO‘s ‘The Sopranos‘, marks his first feature film directorial debut with ‘Not Fade Away‘.  I didn’t know what quite to expect from this coming of age film that relies heavy on music of the 50s and 60s as well as political and social issues to further the story, but from  what the trailer showcased, I expected more of a ‘That Thing You Do!‘ type of film, which chronicled the rise and fall of a local band to fame and fortune.  That is not the case with ‘Not Fade Away‘.  Instead we get something a little more in the way of growing up in turbulent times and dealing with change. By all means, Chase made a solid film, but it is not without its flaws.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Wes Anderson is back to the live action format with his new quirky coming of age film, Moonrise Kingdom.  I can always tell a Wes Anderson film from any other films.  The camera angles, the oddball characters, the musical cues with the slow-motion action, and how every character puts their emotions on the frontline makes up the guts and glory of a Wes Anderson film.  Some people might find all this obnoxious, but Moonrise Kingdom, with its two tween stars, everything seems to work flawlessly.

The ‘Grandaddy of Grunge’ has been on quite a roll over the last few years, musically and artistically, releasing several critically acclaimed albums, an autobiography (finally), not to mention releasing the long, long-awaited “Neil Young Archives: Volume 1” to the masses, proving again and again that ‘rust never sleeps.’ After all, Young is pretty old for a rock and roll star. Film Review: ‘Zero Dark Thirty’

by Woozie on Jan 3rd, 2013

Suzanne here,

zerodarkthirtyposter

It would be very easy when creating a movie about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden to take an “America, Fuck Yeah” kind of tone, but director Kathryn Bigelow and writer Mark Boal achieve something much more valuable. Zero Dark Thirty instead presents a quietly intense story about a woman obsessed and a methodical illustration of how U.S. intelligence worked to ultimately take down the architect of 911. Blu-Ray Review: ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Jan 3rd, 2013

Hi, Bryan Here….

beasts-of-the-southern-wild-blu-ray

Beasts of the Southern Wild is no doubt in my top-10 list for best films of 2012.  I know most of you haven’t heard of this film, but rest assured, once you see this film – and I urge you to see this film as fast you can- you will not forget it.  Beasts of the Southern Wild is Benh Zeithlin’s feature-length directorial debut, and even though he is only 29 years old, he has a poetic vision that is on par with Stanley Kubrick and Terrence Malick.  Zeithlin’s attention to detail allows the movie to successfully portray backwater Louisiana, magical realism, and a culture’s determination and strength. It is unlike anything I have seen.  Not only is this film entertaining, smart, and creative, it is also important in that it shows a very realistic portrayal of some of the poorest people in present day America as they struggle to survive disasters both man-made and natural.  This is what every indie filmmaker should strive for.
