AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (3D BLURAY+2D BLURAY+DVD+DIGITAL COPY)

This is one hell of a blu-ray release. Top notch video and audio with great extras. The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents’ disappearance – leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father’s former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors’ alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (BLU-RAY+DVD+DIGITAL COPY)

This one doesn’t release till December 4th, but that’s plenty of time till the holidays. It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.

ROSEMARY’S BABY (CRITERION COLLECTION BLU-RAY)

I’m so happy this is on Criterion finally. It looks the best it ever has. Plus some great extras. Terrifying and darkly comic, Rosemary’s Baby marked the Hollywood debut of Roman Polanski (Repulsion). This wildly entertaining nightmare, faithfully adapted from Ira Levin’s best seller, stars a revelatory Mia Farrow (Hannah and Her Sisters) as a young mother-to-be who grows increasingly suspicious that her overfriendly elderly neighbors, played by Sidney Blackmer (High Society) and an Oscar-winning Ruth Gordon (Harold and Maude), and self-involved husband (actor and filmmaker John Cassavetes) are hatching a satanic plot against her and her baby. In the decades of occult cinema Polanski’s ungodly masterpiece has spawned, it’s never been outdone for sheer psychological terror.

EXTRAS

  • New high-definition digital restoration, approved by director Roman Polanski, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
  • New interviews with Polanski, actor Mia Farrow, and producer Robert Evans

  • PLUS: A booklet featuring an essay by critic Ed Park and Levin’s afterword for the 2003 New American Library

One of my favorite films of all time. I still cry in this film, yes it still affects me. BRAVE (3D BLU-RAY+2D BLU-RAY+DVD+DIGITAL COPY)

Great looking film from Pixar. It’s not my favorite of Pixar film, but it’s pretty amazing. As always from Pixar, it looks and sounds phenomenal. Set in the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland, Disney Pixar’s Brave follows the heroic journey of Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to change her fate, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane), unleashing chaos in the kingdom. When she turns to an eccentric Witch (voice of Julie Walters), she is granted an ill-fated wish and the ensuing peril forces Merida to harness all of her resources including her mischievous triplet brothers to undo a beastly curse and discover the meaning of true bravery.

V/H/S/ (BLU-RAY)

I actually enjoyed this collection of short horror films. The last one is by far the best, but this is worth a purchase. It will mess with your mind. A group of misfits are hired by an unknown third party to burglarize a desolate house in the countryside and acquire a rare tape. Upon searching the house the guys are confronted with a dead body a hub of old televisions and an endless supply of cryptic footage each video stranger and more inexplicably terrifying.

INDIANA JONES (BLU-RAY FILM COLLECTION)

Yes, the 4th film does come with this set, but you do get the three other films, which are classic and a whole bonus disc full of extras. These look amazing on blu-ray. Own all four Indiana Jones adventures in this Blu-ray collection. This collection includes: Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

BATTLE ROYALE 1 & 2 (BLU-RAY)

One of the coolest films you will ever see. In 2000, director Kinji Fukasaku unleashed BATTLE ROYALE, his violently poetic epic about an innocent group of Junior High students forced by the government to hunt and kill their classmates for sport. It was nominated for 10 Japanese Academy Awards, launched a global phenomenon, and banned from screens by frightened civic groups and distributors across America. Three years later, the equally disturbing sequel — featuring a new class, new rules, and a brutal terrorist plot by the first film’s young survivors — triggered its own tragic firestorm around the world. Now for the first time ever, you can see it all: Experience the entire BATTLE ROYALE saga on 4 discs — including more than 3 hours of definitive Special Features — that forever blasts open one of the most potent, shocking and savagely influential sagas in motion picture history.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS (BLU-RAY)

Another one of my favorite films. This time with the actual 20 minute alternate original ending to the film, which will surprise you.

A skid-row florist’s “mean green mother” of a monster plant is the center of “the looniest, nuttiest, most outrageous movie musical comedy in years” (Jeffrey Lyons, Sneak Preview). Rick Moranis, Steve Martin, Ellen Green, Billy Murray and other comedy greats star.

EXTRAS

RUBY SPARKS (BLU-RAY)

Great little film you will want to watch over and over.

Calvin is a young novelist struggling with his writing – as well as his romantic life. Finally, he makes a breakthrough and creates a character named Ruby who inspires him. When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person.

MUSIC

  • The Beatles Stereo Remaster Vinyl Box Set

  • Should be of no surprise this tops my holiday wish list for 2012. With a successful launch of the CD remasters in 2009, The Beatles do it again with all of their studio albums remastered and pressed on heavy weight 180g vinyl. If that weren’t enough, the limited edition deluxe box set also comes with a swell hardbound book, detailing each album, as well as the vinyl mastering process. Another must-have for any Beatles fan.
  • The Doors “Live at The Hollywood Bowl ’68” Double Vinyl
  • It’s a great time to be a classic rock fan this year! The Doors “Live at The Hollywood Bowl ’68” features the full show with newly restored tracks “Hello, I Love You”, “The WASP (Texas Radio and the Big Beat)” and “Spanish Caravan”, further proving this performance as one of The Doors’ greatest. Doors fans will also want to pick up the DVD or Blu-Ray of the performance, which has been meticulously restored from the original film negatives.
The Polyphonic Spree “Holidaydream” LP

Ok…partially biased on this selection, as I helped work on the design and packaging, but the music contained on the LP is superb. The Spree showcase some seminal holiday classics and penned originals in only a way The Polyphonic Spree can. The vinyl edition comes with a different track listing from the CD/digital version, plus contains a vinyl only ‘hidden’ track, not to mention each vinyl is hand mixed, making each record unique from the next.
Johnny Cash “The Complete Columbia Album Collection” CD Box Set

Being the vinyl junkie I am, there are still times when it’s worth buying the occasional CD or two, like this 63 disc collection containing all of Johnny Cash’s Columbia albums, including his work with The Highwaymen. Some early Sun hits, singles and non-album tracks are also included, making this one impressive music collection from this or any artist.
The Velvet Underground “The Verve/MGM Albums” Vinyl Box Set

Original releases of the VU’s catalog is increasingly hard to find these days, especially the Mono version, but Sundazed music has made it easier for fans to get their VU mono fix with this 5 LP box set. The set contains their first three LPs, Nico’s amazing “Chelsea Girls” soundtrack and the unfinished forth album (which became “Loaded”) all sourced from the original tapes, and packaged in a nifty flip-top box. This set definitely makes the ultimate VU box set to date.
The Rolling Stones “Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965” Deluxe Box Set

Rarely seen and fully restored, this documentary captures an early Rolling Stones during a two day tour of Ireland in September 1965. This 5 disc set features each the director’s and producer’s cuts, extensive never-before-seen footage, full audio recordings of live performances on CD and vinyl. The interview with Brian Jones should be worth it alone for any fan of early Stones.
Led Zeppelin “Celebration Day”

Led Zeppelin’s amazing reunion gig from 2007 honoring Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun finally sees a commercial release on DVD, Blu-ray, CD and Vinyl in various standard and deluxe configurations. For those who didn’t get to see this show live, this will probably be the closest you will EVER get to a full-on Zeppelin Reunion. Deluxe editions of the DVD and Blu-ray versions contain bonus rehearsal footage while the 3xLP edition is pressed on 180g vinyl. Zeppelin diehards will more than likely buy every edition to get it all.
The Beatles “Magical Mystery Tour” Deluxe Box Set

When was the last time you really sat down to watch “Magical Mystery Tour?” As strange as the film is, MMT has been fully restored and available in a deluxe blu-ray/DVD/vinyl EP edition. The film contains additional footage, new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as new edits with additional never-before-seen footage of performances of “Your Mother Should Know”, “Blue Jay Way” and “Fool on the Hill.” See the film the way it was intended.
Eric Clapton “Slowhand” 35th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition

Clapton’s seminal 1977 album, which spawned the hits “Cocaine” and “Wonderful Tonight”, gets a deluxe anniversary treatment with a remastered and expanded version of the album on CD and hi-res stereo DVD, the full April 1977 Hammersmith Odeon live show and studio album on 180g vinyl.
Taj Mahal “The Hidden Treasures of Taj Mahal 1969-1973”

This two disc set by blues genius Taj Mahal unearths several finished, previously unreleased studio gems, infusing signature roots music, soul, funk and earthy blues. The set also includes a full-length live set from Royal Albert Hall in London, 1970, and makes for a great companion to Mahal’s “In Progress and In Motion” anthology from the late 1990s.

And from all corners, bitter conflicts soon reignite, intimate betrayals are perpetrated, and a grand cast of outlaws and priests, soldiers and skinchangers, nobles and slaves, will face seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Some will fail, others will grow in the strength of darkness. But in a time of rising restlessness, the tides of destiny and politics will lead inevitably to the greatest dance of all.
TOTALLY MAD: 60 YEARS OF HUMOR, SATIRE, STUPIDITY, AND STUPIDITY

For the past six decades (that’s 60 years-we did the math so you don’t have to) MAD Magazine has keenly observed the American landscape and promptly made fun of everything in sight. Unwavering in their commitment to high quality stupidity, MAD’s legendary artists and writers, long known as “The Usual Gang of Idiots,” have brilliantly satirized politics, celebrities, sports, media, cultural trends, and more. Totally MAD (originally titled The New American Cookbook until cooler heads prevailed) is the ultimate collection of MAD’s most idiotic material, including such classics as Spy vs. Spy, The MAD Fold-in, A MAD Look At…, The Lighter Side of, Horrifying Clichés and The Shadow Knows, plus modern MAD classics including The MAD Strip Club and The Fundalini Pages. Whether you grew up with MAD in the 50s, 60s, or 70s, reading it with a flashlight under the covers so your parents wouldn’t catch you, or in the 80s, 90s and beyond, reading it while watching the MADtv sketch comedy show or the more recent animated series on the Cartoon Network, this book will bring back fond memories and also provide a great introduction to MAD for new readers. Then again, maybe not.

007 THE JAMES BOND ARCHIVES

“Bond, James Bond.” Since Sean Connery uttered those immortal words in 1962, the most dashing secret agent in the history of cinema has been charming and thrilling audiences worldwide. This impeccably British character created by author Ian Fleming has starred in 23 EON-produced films, played by 6 different actors over five decades. To celebrate 50 years of this innovative franchise, EON Productions opened their archives of photos, designs, storyboards, and production materials to editor Paul Duncan, who spent two years researching over one million images and 100 filing cabinets of documentation. The result is the most complete account of the making of the series, covering every James Bond film ever made, beginning with Dr. No (1962) and ending with the upcoming Skyfall (2012), including the spoof Casino Royale (1967) and Never Say Never Again (1983). The stunning imagery is accompanied by an oral history recounted by over 150 cast and crew members, relating the true inside story of how the Bond films were made. Containingpreviously unpublished photography and artwork, as well as production memos from filming, this book is a comprehensive tribute to the legend of James Bond.
THE STANLEY KUBRICK ARCHIVES

The first book to explore Stanley Kubrick’s archives and the most comprehensive study of the filmmaker to date, divided into 2 parts.Part 1: The films
In 1968, when Stanley Kubrick was asked to comment on the metaphysical significance of 2001: A Space Odyssey, he replied: It s not a message I ever intended to convey in words. 2001 is a nonverbal experience…. I tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophic content. The philosophy behind Part 1 borrows from this line of thinking: from the opening sequence of Killer s Kiss to the final frames of Eyes Wide Shut, Kubrick s complete films will be presented chronologically and wordlessly via frame enlargements. A completely nonverbal experience.Part 2: The Creative Process
Divided into chapters chronologically by film, Part 2 brings to life the creative process of Kubrick s filmmaking by presenting a remarkable collection of material from his archives, including photographs, props, posters, artwork, set designs, sketches, correspondence, documents, screenplays, drafts, notes, and shooting schedules. Accompanying the visual material are essays by noted Kubrick scholars, articles written by and about Kubrick, and a selection of Kubrick s best interviews.
