Bryan’s Review of ‘Hotel Transylvania’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Hotel Transylvania’ is a huge spectacle on the eyes.  With giant colorful monsters, swooping camera pans at every scene, and a somewhat decent voice cast, you’d think ‘Hotel Transylvania’ would be the perfect movie for all ages this Halloween.  However, ‘Hotel Transylvania’  relies more on the visual aspect with keeping little kids entertained to the fullest every second, that the story and characters get left buried underground.  With the other animated monster and zombie films that are out right now, this one ranks low on the list.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Strike Back: Season 1’ Blu-Ray!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 29th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…..

Even though this killer series airs on Cinemax, HBO is releasing the blu-rays.  And I love the fact that HBO is releasing the Digital Copies and DVD’s along with the Blu-rays in the same set.  I hope they continue this.  This is a great original series from Cinemax that looks great and sounds good too.  Not too many extras on this disc besides some commentaries, but I have a feeling that once you start watching ‘Strike Back’, you will want to watch more.

Suzanne’s Review of ‘Liberal Arts’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 28th, 2012

Suzanne Here….

As we age, we mature…and sometimes we mature in different ways at different times. This is not a new concept, but in Josh Radnor’s Liberal Arts, we see a group of characters facing different periods of growth and adversity. The film may not reach new depths of introspection and understanding of the human condition, but it is one that many can enjoy simply for the recognition of ourselves in the characters.

Suzanne Reviews ‘Won’t Back Down’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 28th, 2012

Suzanne Here….

Educational reform is a difficult enough subject for policymakers to tackle. Nothing is black and white, no one is completely to blame or completely self-interested, and there are a tremendous number of problems and an infinite number of solutions. So in approaching a movie about the plight of public education today, it would be nice to see the subject treated with the nuance appropriate to actually reform the system. Unfortunately, Won’t Back Down misses this nuance and focuses on creating a good vs. evil environment with two sides that don’t work together to find a solution. Fine, it’s a movie – except this is a subject that requires some thought, and so should this movie.

The wait is ALMOST over, folks! We at Boomstick, and I’m sure the rest of the world, have been wondering if/when the 2009 Beatles’ Remastered catalog would see a proper vinyl release, aside from the Record Store Day singles release from last year. The good news is all those classic LPs, from ‘Please Please Me’ all the way down to ‘Let It Be’ will see an official release in North America on November 13th, just in time for the holidays. Available individually or bundled in a limited edition collector’s box set, this will be at the top of many a holiday wish list! Read the rest of this entry »

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 28th, 2012

Hi, Bryan and Lisa S. Here…..

9d8c1968aa60cdb4dca86ed6790187e2

I had some help writing this article with writer, Lisa S.   Lisa hails from netherworld of the Northwest and is not above watching zombie movies for 24 hours straight.  She loves all kinds of scary movies and is an avid music fan.  You might even find her perusing the used DVD bin at your local movie store looking for old Ernest movies and Sifl and Olly discs.  Lisa helped quite a bit with this article and you can expect her read many more of her articles on this site from this point forward.  Give her a warm welcome and visit her online book and record store HERE.

Now let’s get to the list.  Here are Boomstick’s Top 20 Female Badasses in film and television.  I tried to keep it in the horror/sci-fi genre, but a couple of action star made it in there.  These females are the most hardcore we feel, by how much ass they kick, their courage, and their sex appeal.  We dare you to find better role models and badasses than this.  Enjoy the list.

Check Out the Trailer for ‘Paranormal Activity 4’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Another year, another ‘Paranormal Activity’.  This is the 4th installment of the horror franchise, and by the looks of the trailer, Katie and Hunter make appearances.  It looks like this time, the film centers on early teenage kids, and it still looks like the film pacs a bunch of scares.  I like this movies a lot.  I always have.  And diretors Jenry Joost and Ariel Schulman seem to have some fun new ideas to get our heart rate up.

Yet, another trailer for today.  This time it is the remake of the 1966 film ‘Gambit’.  Instead of Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine, we have Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz.  Don’t fret about Diaz being in the picture, because the Coen Bros. wrote this film.  There is no release date yet set for the US, however it will release in the UK on November 21.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Looper’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 27th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…..

Science Fiction is back in a big way.  With the recent ‘Prometheus’ film, ‘John Carter’, ‘MIB3’, and ‘The Hunger Games’, audiences are proving they are ready for a huge sci-fi kick in theaters.  Rian Johnson’s ‘Looper’ is one of the better sci-fi films to come out this year, if not the best so far.  ‘Looper’ is a highly entertaining thrill ride that combines time travel, telekinesis, and realistic future world.  I was very happy to see that Johnson got the sci-fi genre right, and it left me wanting more.

Check Out The Trailer for ‘Stoker’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 26th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Here is the trailer for Park Chan-wook’s ‘Stoker’, starring Nicole Kidman and Dermot Mulroney.  Yes Park Chan-wook sounds familiar to you, because he was the one who directed ‘Oldboy’.  “After India’s father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie, who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother. Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him.”  Nicole Kidman looks awesome in this.  This is very different for her.  Enjoy the trailer.  ‘Stoker’ will be released March 1st, 2013.

Finally, after several years of going in and out of production, the new Wolverine film is finally taking shape.  James Mangold is directing the project.  Mangold directed ‘Cop Land’, ‘Girl Interrupted’, ‘3:10 To Yuma’, ‘Identity’, and ‘Walk the Line’ to name a few.  Not sure how to take this film yet.  At one point, Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct, but that fell through.  I was not a fan of ‘Wolverine Origins’, but hopefully this film will be much better.

Bryan’s Review of ‘The Trouble With The Curve’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 24th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Trouble With The Curve’ is one of the cheesiest films I have seen in recent memory.  If this film were a burger, it would be a triple cheese burger with a side of cheese fries. That’s not to say that it doesn’t have moments of good.  It does, but ‘Trouble With The Curve’ tries to force feed you what you should be feeling and thinking at every moment.  Even with its amazing cast and baseball trivia, ‘Trouble With The Curve’ never slid into home plate to win the game.  Yes, I know that was cheesy, but then, that’s how I felt watching ‘Trouble With The Curve’.

2012 Emmy Award Winners!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

Below is the list of the winners for the 2012 Prime-Time Emmy Award Winners.  I don’t  see how ‘Modern Family’ and ‘Two and Half Men’ win anything.  They shouldn’t win any kind of award when they go up against shows like ‘Mad Men’, ‘Game of Thrones’, and ‘Breaking Bad’.  The Emmy judges need to be fired and never allowed to pick winners ever again.  However, much congratulations to ‘Homeland’, ‘Downton Abbey’, Aaron Paul, ‘Veep’, and ‘American Horror Story’

Hi, Bryan Here….

This is awesome news.  I am currently reading this trilogy right now.  I’m almost done with book two, and I have wanted a film or television adaptation of this book since I heard about it.  I think we got a small glimpse of it with ‘Blade 2’ as the vampire mutants are very similar to the vampire plague in this book, ‘The Strain’.  Carlton Cuse will head up the television show, which Cuse was a big part of ‘LOST’ and ‘The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.’   The series will be over at FX, which has only committed to a pilot, but I expect it to be brought to series fairly soon.  Del Toro will write, direct and executive produce the pilot.

Criterion Collection Titles For December 2012!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 17th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

The good folks over at Criterion have just announced their titles for December, 2012.  There are some really cool titles for December.  One  title I have waited for years to own on criterion.  Another title is actually Christopher Nolan’s first film, ‘Following’, which is very exciting.  If this is any indication, we might get future Nolan films on Criterion sooner than later, which means a possible Dark Knight Criterion. After all, with Criterion, most director’s who get a film in at Criterion, tend to get more of their films in that pot.   So here’s hoping.  Sadly, no announcement of ‘Good Burger’ or any of the Ernest movies yet, but hopefully in the year 2013, we will get at least one of those.  I can’t wait until December now.  Thanks, Criterion.  Thanks.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Good news for your Tarantino fans out there.  Actually, I don’t know whether to be happy or angry about this.  Lionsgate and Miramax are releasing a big Tarantino movie set on bluray on November 20th.  It will contain 8 films and two bonus discs.  This kind of sucks, because I imagine most of us already own all of these on bluray already individually.  Now we have to purchase all of these again.  And, why are the ‘Kill Bill’ films not in one film like we have been promised for years now.  I will admit, the artwork is cool from MondoTees, but I can’t justify purchasing this, for two extra bonus discs.  These look to be the same blurays that we already have.  And why did they not wait till next year to release this, so they could include ‘Django Unchained’?    Official press release below.

Bryan’s Review of ‘End of Watch’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 13th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘End of Watch’ is one of the best cop films of recent memory.  Director and writer David Ayer captures the life of the L.A.P.D on duty and off duty.  Ayer is no stranger to the police officer story line, as he wrote ‘Training Day’ and ‘Dark Blue’.  But with ‘End of Watch’, he scraps the bad and corrupt cop vibe to more of a realistic setting with good cops on the job.  The guerilla camera-work really puts you in the middle of intense situations that cops walk into daily.  ‘End of Watch’ is one thrilling ride from start to finish.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Sleepwalk With Me’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 10th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Sleepwalk With Me’ is the sleeper hit of the year.  Back a few years ago,  genius comedian Mike Birbiglia added a long monologue to his stand-up comedy routine called ‘Sleepwalk With Me’. In it, he talks about his real-life sleeping disorder called REM Behavior Disorder where he literally acts out his dreams.  Sometimes, they have serious and painful consequences.  In ‘Sleepwalk With Me’, Birbiglia takes his story a bit further as he plays himself with a different name.  He plays Matt Pandamiglio, a rookie stand-up comedian in New York who has been with his girlfriend Abby (Lauren Ambrose) going on almost a decade now.  As his comedy career starts to take off, Matt struggles with committing to Abby.  ‘Sleepwalk With Me’ is not only warm, inviting, and charming, but it’s one of the funniest films of the year.

Check out this great trailer for the film ‘A Late Quartet’, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Katherine Keener, Imogen Poots, and Christopher Walken.  The film tells the story of a beloved cellist of a world-renowned string quartet who receives a life changing diagnosis, the group’s future suddenly hangs in the balance: suppressed emotions, competing egos, and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship and collaboration. As they are about to play their 25th anniversary concert, quite possibly their last, only their intimate bond and the power of music can preserve their legacy. Inspired by and structured around Beethoven’s Opus 131 String Quartet in C-sharp minor, the film pays homage to chamber music and the cultural world of New York.  Enjoy.

‘E.T.’ Will Return To The Big Screen!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 10th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

That’s right, folks.  ‘E.T.’ will be on the big screen again, thanks to Turner Classic Movies and Fathom Events.  Screening will take place October 3rd at 7:00pm at select theaters across the country.  This marks the 30th anniversary of the film and most likely is geared to promote the new blu-ray coming out as well.  This was one of the first films I saw in the theater and it just blew my mind.  It was one of the first times my Dad and I bonded over a film.  Needless to say it holds a special place in my heart.  Not only will you get a newly remastered version of the film, but also a journey of the making of ‘E.T.’.  And yes, folks, this is this original film, not the version with the extra scenes or the CGI’d walkie-talkie replacements.  Spielberg acknowledged his fuck-up long ago and apologized.  The same can’t be said for Lucas.  I’m super excited about this and hope all of you can make it and take your kids to see this on the big screen.  Official press release below.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Bachelorette’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 6th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…..

Leslye Headland’s ‘Bachelorette’ tries to combine ‘The Hangover’ and ‘Bridesmaids’ into a solid film.  But, with its characters, who I’d rather see pushed out of an airplane at 30,000 feet without a parachute then watch another minute of them on screen, really soured this film’s potential.  ‘Bachelorette’ was originally an off-Broadway play by Headland, who subsequently wrote and directed the film adaptation you see now.  This whole story and cast looks great on paper, however these characters are just terrible people, who really have no redeeming qualities to make you feel good about them or good about yourself watching the film.  And after the whole film shows that these characters are miserable people, the last two minutes of the film tries to wrap everything up in a cozy happy little ball with our four main actresses dancing like nothing happened.  It makes no sense.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Dark Horse has teamed up with HBO and ‘Game of Thrones’ to release a few items from the epic series.  One is a ten inch statue of Tyrion Lannister, played by the amazing Peter Dinklage.  The other, is a replica of the actual Iron Throne.  Looks like they did a pretty good job on the Lannister statue.  This statue is a limited edition and won’t be available for purchase until February.  The Tyrion statue will retail at around $199.99.

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 6th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

The SYFY channel has just ordered 12 episodes of ‘Sinbad’ a new action adventure series from BBC Worldwide.  And no, I’m talking about the comedian.  ‘Sinbad’ will chronicle the famous sailor’s voyages over the globe.  The series should air starting in April of next year on the SYFY network.  If this is as good as ‘Battlestar Galactica’, then you know I’m one billion percent in.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Jason Blum and his Blumhouse production company have jumped into the Haunted House business.  Blumhouse Productions was the company that got behind the ‘Paranormal Activity’ films.  “Visitors will tour the twisting corridors of an eerily haunted theater whose stage was home to one of the world’s most deranged, dark art magicians during the heyday of 1920s vaudeville. That is, until one tragic performance when his assistant climbed into a magical box and vanished forever. The theater was shut down instantly and permanently closed to the public … until now.”  Sounds cool, but not as cool as Eli Roth’s Goretorium.  Press release below.

Hi, Bryan Here….

We have been hearing for a while about a new installment of ‘Child’s Play’ along with a complete reboot of the franchise.  We even wrote a little bit about this ‘Curse of Chucky’ film a few weeks ago, which you can read HERE.  It looks like it will be direct-to-dvd, which is unfortunate, but any new Chucky is good, right?  I’ve been a huge fan of the ‘Child’s Play’ series since the first one came out in the 80’s, and even though the films have gotten much sillier, I still enjoy them.  And I’m so happy that Brad Dourif is once again returning to voice the killer doll.  Press release below.

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ Returns As a TV Series At CBS!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Sep 4th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

How long have we been hearing about a new ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ project?  Probably for the last 10 years or so.  Eddie Murphy, who plays the lead Detective Axel Foley has expressed interest in doing another sequel, but he has stated that he didn’t think the third installment was very good, and was holding out for a better script.  To me, that doesn’t make sense, because his films over the past several years have been awful, maybe with the exception of ‘Dream Girls’.  Instead of a film, we will get a tv series.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Amazon’s Prime Streaming Service just got a hell of a lot better.  It will be giving Netflix a run for its money.  EPIX signed a deal with Amazon that more than doubles Amazon’s streaming film catalogue.  This comes shortly after EPIX’s contract with Netflix expired.  Now films from Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate will be available on Amazon’s Streaming service.  “We think customers will really enjoy watching new titles like The AvengersIron Man 2 and The Hunger Games on their Kindle Fire, PlayStation 3, Xbox, iPad or any of the other of the Amazon Instant Video compatible devices,” says Amazon VP Bill Carr. Epix CEO Mark Greenberg calls the deal “a great line extension” for Amazon.  Read the official press release below.

Movie Quotes

[Being told he can go home]
Private Ryan:
Hell, these guys deserve to go home as much as I do. They've fought just as hard.
Captain Miller:
Is that what I'm supposed to tell your mother when she gets another folded American flag?
Private Ryan:
You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she'd understand that.
