Hi, Bryan Here….

Good news, everyone.  Troma Entertainment has just released 150 of its movies for free on YouTube.  This includes films they just distribute, and not necessarily make.  Troma founder and director Lloyd Kaufman is a genius.  Kaufman definitely knows that the internet and free video helps the film business.  This is amazing news.

Suzanne’s Review of ‘Lawless’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 31st, 2012

Suzanne Here….

Based on a fictionalized version of true events, Lawless is a violent – very violent – tale of a family’s fight to sell moonshine on its own terms. With a star studded cast including Gary Oldman, Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, and Guy Pearce, the story of the Bondurant clan and their fight to maintain a way of life in Prohibition era Franklin County, VA will leave you cheering for the lawbreakers, cringing at the violence of organized crime, and wondering what exactly the Bondurant moonshine recipe was.

Hi, Bryan Here….

It’s been over 40 years since the original ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ by Tobe Hooper.  Well, in January, we are returning to Texas with an all new film called ‘Texas Chainsaw 3D’.  Lionsgate has unveiled a very cool poster of the new film, which seems to feature all the Letherface masks from the films.  I’m a sucker for these films. John Dugan, Marilyn Burns, Bill Mosely, and Gunnar Hansen will all be in the new film.  How cool is that?  Greg Nicotero will be doing the makeup FX, making this top notch.

Bryan’s Review of ‘The Possession’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 30th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

Finally, the Catholics aren’t the only group getting into the demon possession genre.  There is a Judaic version now.  ‘The Possession’ is basically ‘The Exorcist’, but much worse and instead of priests, there are rabbis.  The demon is known as a dybbuk and resides in a wooden box.  ‘The Possession’ is partly based on a true story, but what horror movie isn’t these days.  With the help of Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi producing this little flick, I was hoping this would be truly terrifying.  Instead, I received a dull film with a couple of creepy moments that I forgot about as soon as I got home.  If I learned anything from ‘The Possession’, it’s “Never buy an old mysterious box at a yard sale.”

Good news, everyone.  Entertainment One is partnering up with a couple of producers to develop two of Stanley Kubrick’s never-before-used screenplays.  Those screenplays are ‘Downslope’ and ‘God Fearing Man’.  It’s as if Kubrick is still making movies from the grave.  At least I hope they find someone to mimic his vision, but I’m sure that will never happen.  But any Kubrick is good.

With the success of ‘The Avengers’, it’s not surprise that Warner wants to do ‘The Justice League’ film, which will put most of the DC superheroes together to fight evil.  We have talked before on how Warner expressed interest in Ben Affleck directing this epic project.  However we hear that Affleck isn’t wanting to do the picture, because he is busy doing his own projects.  And I can understand that.  He can have total control over his own films, but with this big budget project, I doubt anyone will have total creative control.

Hi, Bryan Here….

“We were up at “the top of the world” and we saw this shooting star and we decided to go look for it. But instead of finding the shooting star we saw this… this circus tent.”

EXCLUSIVE: The first time I watched ‘Killer Klowns From Outer Space’, I was about nine years old and it was on HBO.  I watched it with my dad, and I remember how much we laughed and how frightened we were at certain moments.  Especially me.  I remember thinking how cool and scary those killer klowns were, and how much I wanted to go into that circus tent and shoot the popcorn guns.  It was one of the defining moments in my life where I know I wanted to be involved with film, especially horror.  I loved how there was very little CG, rather it was all real FX, costumes, and makeup.  After my first viewing, I looked in the paper to see if it was running anytime again during the week (back then, we had to read the paper to see what was airing on the one channel of HBO).

Bryan’s Review of ‘The Apparition’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 24th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

I haven’t seen a movie this terrible since ‘Wrath of the Titans’.  Read me review of that HERE.  Todd Lincoln’s horror movie, ‘The Apparition’ is hands down one of the worst films I have ever seen.  And I hate to say that, because I love horror films.  But not one wretched piece of this movie had any redeeming quality about it. The only way I would ever think to sit down and watch this film again would be if the good folks over at Rifftrax did a riff commentary on the film.  Even then, I’d hate myself for watching it again.  I’d rather watch ‘Manos: The Hands of Fate’ every day for a year than watch ‘The Apparition’ again.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Premium Rush’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 23rd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

David Koepp’s ‘Premium Rush’ was a fun ride through New York with enough adrenaline to keep the sub par plot moving along.  What makes this film enjoyable is Joseph Gordon-Levitt and its ultra fast pace, as it has a timed clock (think ’24’) graphic that pops up on screen throughout.  Other than those two elements, ‘Premium Rush’ lacks the push to cross the finish line.

‘Treme’ Returns for 3rd Season Sept. 23!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 22nd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

First, the people came back. Then, the crime. Now, more than two years after the near death of a great city, the money is starting to arrive, which would sound like a solution if this were some place other than New Orleans, and this was some other era but America at the millennium. For the people of New Orleans, even the promises of redevelopment come with strings attached, and every dollar that shows up – whether from government disaster relief, or from venture capital, or even from those seeking to remake New Orleans in the wake of Katrina – carries with it new dynamics and new risks. National interest has waned, moving on to the next headline, but those who know and love the Crescent City have no choice. They must find their way back to what matters in the life of their city. However, little of what they can bring to bear yields a quick result, and nothing about New Orleans – its government, its police department and courtrooms, its school system – works as it should. Nothing is easy.  In the end, their only weapons are community. And culture.

Bryan’s DVD Review of ‘The Devil Makes Three’!!!

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘The Devil Makes Three’ came out 50 years ago, and still holds up today.  This film which also stars Gene Kelly is part caper, part military, and part thriller.  Just like ‘Black Hand’, this is a lesser known film of Gene’s, but it’s still a great one.  And, I believe all of it was shot on location in Germany in the early 50’s.  I think if you give ‘The Devil Makes Three’ a chance, it will be a staple in your collection.

Check Out The Trailer for ‘Seven Psychopaths’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 14th, 2012

Billy (Rockwell) is Marty’s best friend, an unemployed actor and part time dog thief, who wants to help Marty by any means necessary. All he needs is a little focus and inspiration. Hans (Walken) is Billy’s partner in crime. A religious man with a violent past. Charlie (Harrelson) is the psychopathetic gangster whose beloved dog, Billy and Hans have just stolen. Charlie’s unpredictable, extremely violent and wouldn’t think twice about killing anyone or anything associated with the theft. Marty is going to get all the focus and inspiration he needs, just as long as he lives to tell the tale.  Enjoy the trailer. Oh yeah, and TOM WAITS is in this movie.

It’s gotta be one of the sexiest record covers in music history, especially from a red-blooded American male perspective, giving you a little bit of a visual tease of nipples and pubic area without giving away too much. You’ve seen the album countless times in magazines, on record store shelves, probably even hanging on your big brother’s wall, but have you actually heard any of the songs on Roxy Music’s “Country Life” LP? Bryan’s Review of ‘The Bourne Legacy’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 10th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here…

Let me start off by saying that I love the first three “Bourne” films.  I have owned them multiple times and on multiple formats, the latest one being the out-of -print bluray set.  Those three previous films were sort of milestones in filmmaking that took us on different continents and developed a new faster paced action film, that was brutal yet beautiful.  This new film, ‘The Bourne Legacy’, sadly does not have any of that.  I found ‘The Bourne Legacy’ slow-moving, weak, and un-interesting.

Hi, Bryan Here….

We have been talking about a third film for ‘Bill and Ted’ for what seems like a year now.  We have heard from both Keanu and Alex about how they want to do a third film and how they are working on a story for it.  Well, it seems all the work has paid off as there will be a third film.  Both Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are attached to star with Dean Parisot to direct.  Parisot was responsible for ‘Galaxy Quest’.

Bryan’s Review of ‘The Campaign’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 10th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I had high hopes for ‘The Campaign’.  It seems like a flawless formula on paper by having Will Ferrell and Zach Galafianakis play bitter political rivalries for an upcoming town election.  Add director Jay Roach to the picture who is known for the ‘Meet the Parents’ and ‘Austin Powers’ series to make a brilliant comedic film.  Unfortunately, after the first half of the film, ‘The Campaign’ nose dives into unfunny and dull dialogue and story telling.  It was as if everybody had to finish the film in two days and they just put together the last part of the film in  matter of hours.  I was disappointed.

Taylor Reviews ‘Hope Springs’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2012

Taylor Here…

Marriage takes work.  Jobs, kids, houses, and ESPN have a way of creeping into happy relationships, replacing excitement and fun with crippling boredom.  People get in ruts, they stop paying attention to their partners’ needs, and their foundation begins to crack.  We’ve been told this story many times before, and while no new ground is broken, Hope Springs is a cute movie to which almost everyone in the audience can relate.

Bryan’s Review of ‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 8th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

‘Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry’ is an amazing documentary that centers around the world renowned artist known as Ai Weiwei.  Perhaps Weiwei is best known for his design work for the Bejing National Stadium known as The Bird’s Nest, which was the focal point for the 2008 summer Olympics. Shortly after the stadium was finished, Weiwei publicly denounced the games as Chinese propaganda by all the media not covering Bejing’s vast underclass people. Those statements put him in the public spotlight and he became under heavy scrutiny from the Chinese government, but Weiwei’s courage to stand up to the Chinese government became the main emphasis of his art.

Hi, Bryan Here….

We all saw this coming, right?  Disney CEO Bob Iger announced today that Joss Whedon will be back to write and direct the sequel to ‘The Avengers’.  Add to that, Whedon will head up a live action TV series involving the Marvel characters.  There is no title or release date yet for the sequel, but it’s look like it will be at least 2015 before the sequel hits.

Hi, Bryan Here….

Writer/director/producer Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Funny People) brings audiences This Is 40, an original comedy that expands upon the story of Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) from the blockbuster hit Knocked Up as we see first-hand how they are dealing with their current state of life.  Looks like Apatow is straying a bit away from the toilet humor with each film he makes.  This looks very good, however I will miss Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Martin Starr, and Jonah Hill in this film.  Enjoy the trailer.  ‘This is 40’ releases December 21st, 2012.

Hi, Bryan Here….

How cool.  I one day I get to write about two of my favorite musicians.  Tom Waits and now Michael Jackson. I only wish they would have been able to collaborate on an album together.  It would have been epic.  We first found out about this 25th anniversary album a few weeks ago, but we didn’t know what all was included.  Today, the good folks at the MJ Estate and Epic/Legacy Records announced all the details for the upcoming 25th anniversary release of the famous ‘Bad’ album.  There are DVD’s and tons of new songs.  I can’t wait.

Tom Waits Delivers New Music Video! No Tour Announcement!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 7th, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

So, over the past several days, Tom Waits has been teasing his fans (which include me) about something he was announcing today.  He has posted a few images on his website hinting of what’s to come.  It all seemed to be pirate themed.  There was tons of speculation over the internet about what the musician had up his sleeve.  We were all hoping for a tour announcement.  Maybe a Tom Waits cruise?

Hi, Bryan Here….

On October 10th, the ‘Daredevil’ right will revert back to Marvel from 20th Century Fox.  So it’s in Fox’s best interest to start production on a ‘Daredevil’ reboot.  Marvel has been discussing this project with Fox chairman Tom Rothman about keeping the ‘Daredevil’ story with Fox past its October 10th deadline, because it looks like Fox is lining up director Joe Carnahan to direct the reboot.

Bryan Reviews ‘Killer Joe’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 3rd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

I didn’t know what quite to expect from ‘Killer Joe’, but after watching it, I got more than I bargained for.  ‘Killer Joe’ was directed by William Friedkin who is most known for directing ‘The French Connection’, ‘The Exorcist’, and the recent film ‘Bug’.  Friedkin has been out of the spotlight for some time now, but his return with ‘Killer Joe’, the 76 year old Oscar winning director proves he has not missed a step.

Bryan Reviews ‘Total Recall’!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Aug 3rd, 2012

Hi, Bryan Here….

Some people will say that you can’t compare a remake to the original.  They say, “Let it stand on its own.”  It’s very difficult to do that with a film that garnered a lot of attention 22 years ago and still is a milestone in filmmaking in the science-fiction genre.  And it’s very tough to let a remake stand on its own if it doesn’t stray to far from the original.  There will always be comparisons.  Unfortunately, this 2012 version of ‘Total Recall’ is like a sore inside your mouth that is very painful that would only get better if you would stop tonguing it, but you can’t.  The only redeemable thing about this remake of ‘Total Recall’ are the visual FX.  If you took away that aspect of the film, you might have well been watching static on the screen for two hours.

Hi. Bryan Here….

‘Ruby Saprks’ is a great follow up film from the directors of ‘Little miss Sunshine’ that is an adventure of a writer and his creative process which comes to life…literally.  Zoe Kazan wrote an exceptionally great script, and with the help of directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, ‘Ruby Sparks’ hits every beat.

Terry Sheridan:
I mean, when you think back on the vast scheme of your hugely adventurous life... where do I fit in? Was I the love of your life, or just another bump on the road? Was I time well spent? Four months? More good than bad? Come on, it had to be more than that, am I right?
