Pretty much agree with the review, though I thought Tucci’s character was awesome (Cheers. No, you are having an operation tomorrow. I am not having an operation.) I thought the film was funny, exciting, well-done pretty much across the board. And then at the big sacrificial moment at the end…I didn’t care. Contrast this with the beginning of Star Trek, which had a similar moment and makes me cry just thinking about it. The issue really was that the film did a great job setting up a story about character and didn’t do anything with it. As a friend put it, his only test was the attractive blnod, and he kinda failed that one. It’s a shame–this could have been great instead of just highly enjoyable and a great set up.

As to the mismatch between Cap’n and America today–that actually is his story. The character was retired after WWII ended and then brought back during the late 60s as a contrast to the anti-Americanism and cynicism of the day. I don’t know how much of that gets in Avengers, but rest assured that that is the story in CA2.
