On a cool and slightly humid evening at Dallas’ historic Kessler Theatre in North Oak Cliff, music fans of all types crammed into the intimate venue like sardines to see Wanda Jackson, the proclaimed ‘Queen of Rockabilly’ give it all she literally had.

The show, which was expected to begin with her set around 9:00pm, didn’t start until well after 10:30pm, due to a recent case of mild laryngitis the legendary singer had  been battling. Most fans were certainly eager for the show to begin, however the crowd appeared to be quite patient and understanding with Jackson as she made her way through her setlist, something I haven’t seen much in Dallas concert-going crowds these last few years.

Hi Bryan Here…

F*ck My A$$!!

Here is the “R” rated red band trailer for the upcoming comedy, “Bad Teacher”.  It stars Cameron Diaz, Justin Timberlake, Jason Segel, and Phyllis Smith (Phyllis from The Office).  I also think I saw John Malkovich in the trailer. This film looks funny from the trailer, but I am not so sure if it will be good as a feature length film, even with the great cast minus Cameron Diaz.

"Dear Marilyn III" by Jonathon Kimbrell.

Tonight marks the official opening of The Cameron Gallery’s annual “Made For Love” exhibit, featuring a wealth of talented and renowned Dallas-based artists.

As February is typically the month of  love and romance the work included in “Made For Love” takes its cue from Cupid’s arrow and showers the walls with objects of obsession and want. Artists Jonathon Kimbrell, Gina Dunn, Nic Noblique, Tanner Lawley and others interpret their views of love to create the amorous spectacle that “Made For Love” has become to be known. “We Are Modern” Sneak Peek

by NapkinArt on Feb 18th, 2011

Hey everyone. Jonathon from Napkin Art Studios here…

As I continue to work on paintings for my upcoming exhibition, “We Are Modern”, opening at The Cameron Gallery April 2, 2011, you can catch sneak previews of some of the work here on the good ‘ol Boomstick site, as well as my own studio blog.

I won’t give away all my goodies, but will do my best to keep everyone returning for more. More importantly, hopefully it’ll get people into the door at the gallery for the opening.

Ok, now back to flipping through vintage issues of “Popular Mechanics” and re-watching all of my available episodes of “Mad Men” for additional inspiration. In case you were wondering, this show is heavily influenced by 1950s and 60s consumer culture.

Stay tuned for further updates.

Hi Bryan Here…

I want you all to give a warm welcome to Boomstick’s new contributing writer, Dr. Joel Hawkins.  He hails from the underground sewers of North Texas and is at least two of the following: gay robot, french polynesian eskimo, slovakian zombie, green blooded canadian, and avatar.  His favorite color is rainbow and when he is not eating cake covered in lucky charms, he is a master at slaying dragons and writing articles about films, television, and music.  Welcome Dr. Joel Hawkins.

Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men: First Class) has a new adventure he’d like to take now that he’s left the School of the Gifted.  Unaware as to whether he’ll direct or produce, Vaughn shared a dream of his with Deadline of hoping to invite Clint Eastwood, Warren Beaty, and Jack Nicholson back to “the lead again” instead of the supporting roles they’ve played so much lately.

Buffalo Springfield to Tour in 2011?

by NapkinArt on Feb 17th, 2011

Back in October 2010, Buffalo Springfield bandmates Neil Young, Stephen Stills (The Talent) and Richie Furay got together onstage for the first time in over 40 years during Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit concert. As most folks probably figured this was a one trick pony, the rumor mills have been running overtime the last couple of months whether or not the influential 1960s rock band would reunite for future gigs.

In November, Furay’s manager, David Spero, confirmed with Rolling Stone that the remaining members have been talking about the possibility of doing some tour dates. Days after the Bridge School gig, Furay said “We just picked up where we left off many, many years ago. It almost felt like going back in time.” Read the rest of this entry »

The Kills Return to Dallas, New Record…

by NapkinArt on Feb 16th, 2011

In support of their fourth record release, “Blood Pressures”, The Kills will return to the Dallas live music scene playing the historic Granada Theatre on April 19th. The Kills had been on a bit of a hiatus as Alison Mosshart had been recording and touring with one of Jack White III’s many bands, The Dead Weather.

The new record drops April 5th and is already gaining some high intensity buzz with the release of their first single, “Satellite.” Check out their site for the short form film of “Satellite” and be prepared to drool all over yourself. Both Mosshart and Jamie Hince are pretty sexy in it, not to mention the quality of the film itself.

“Blood Pressures” is available for pre-order through Domino Records, or ultimately, pick up a copy at your local record store.

Which reminds me…Record Store Day is quickly approaching.

I think it is safe to say we can all collectively breathe a heavy sigh of relief. Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears have a new record releasing in March.

The much anticipated follow-up to their breakout hit record, 2009’s “Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is!”, “Scandalous” is already proving to be another ace up their sleeves. Their funky, raw and youthful vibe to American funk and soul music makes this Austin, TX band a sheer class act, one certainly not to be missed..

Bryan Enters The Void At His Own Risk (A Movie Review)!!!

by Gumbercules9000 on Feb 3rd, 2011

Hi Bryan Here…

I must say that I was a bit anxious to see Gaspar Noe’s new film, “Enter The Void”.  I previously enjoyed his past work (Irreversible and I Stand Alone), even though his work is not widely known or even praised.  What Gaspar does, is show you the raw underbelly of the world with no escape.  I even tend to wonder if he wants his audience to get up and leave in disgust or shut their eyes through most of his films.  With all that said, he still knows how to make a beautiful film and spark debate and interest in the subjects he tackles.  After viewing this film, I can say I enjoyed it.  Now that’s not to say you will.  This film (just like the rest of Noe’s films) most people won’t like.  But for those true and pure cinema lovers, this will rock your boat.

Hi Bryan Here…

The San Diego Comic Con badges this year have been riddled with tons of failure this year.  First they decided to sell their 2011 badges on November of 2010 and once they went on sale, it almost immediately crashed their site.   They tried again on November 22nd with the same results.  Then they tried a test sale where they put  up 1000 badges for sale in December and they sold out in 60 seconds. Twenty years? Gosh…do the young feel old all of a sudden.

Yes friends, that little ol’ band from Seattle who helped usher in the ‘Grunge’ era of the early 1990s is getting ready to release an uber super-deluxe edition of their now classic gems, “Vs.” and “Vitology”, in celebration of the band’s 20th Anniversary.

Both albums are available for pre-order via the band’s website and will be available in six different formats. Choose from deluxe remastered CD versions with bonus tracks, remastered vinyl editions or the special limited edition box set with a truck load of goodies, like remastered version of both albums on CD and vinyl LP, the double vinyl LP of their legendary 1994 Orpheum Theatre performance, a special ‘mix tape’ cassette, an 80-page hardbound book filled with exclusive photos and drawings, including a glassine envelope containing “Vs.” and “Vitology” era memorabilia, such as photos, lithographs, postcards and more.

If you are like me, then the Superbowl game between the Packers and the Steelers is second fiddle to all the awesome commercials and new movie trailers that will be shown.  There are tons of badass films coming out soon, so I imagine that quite a bit of amazing trailers will be shown during the Superbowl this year.  But this awesome Volkswagen commercial is just so great.  i hope to see quite a bit of greatness like this.

Hi Bryan Here…

Nintendo has released some of their best 8-Bit Games to be played online without downloading them.  Wow.  The days are going to fly by now.  I love playing these 8-bit games.  In a lot of ways, they still are better than any of the newer games that come out today.

Hi Bryan Here…

What an excellent day this is for bluray announcements.  This news for some odd reason gets me so giddy.  I love the Ernest films.  Especially the older ones.  I enjoy the newer ones, but when i was a kid, I watched Ernest and Pee-Wee.  Jim Varney’s character of Ernest P. Worrell brought so much comedy and joy to my life growing up.  I am so excited that they are getting the hi-def treatement.

This Just In: “White Stripes Call It Quits”

by NapkinArt on Feb 2nd, 2011

Kimbrell Here…

I’m sad to report that as of today, February 2, 2011, The White Stripes have decided to call it quits.

The reasons for the amicable split are not entirely clear, but according to the Third Man Records website, “the reason is not due to artistic differences, or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health”.

Despite whatever reason the band came to in regards to the split, the band hopes the news is not ‘met with sorrow’. Even though there will be no future recordings by the band, fans can still look forward to unreleased studio and live records via the band’s Third Man Vault subscription service and other outlets.

The last 13+ years the band has been together have gone by in a blur, I will admit. In that short amount of time, The White Stripes have ushered in a new era of rock n’ roll, recorded some incredible records, and I’m sure have inspired many garage acts to follow in their place.

As John Lennon once said about the break-up of The Beatles, ‘it’s not the end of the world. You’ve got all the records if you still want to reminisce.’ We all hear you there, John. Instead of mourning the loss of another great rock band, let us instead celebrate the art they did give us, and hope there is a chance for a reunion somewhere down the road. Besides, as busy as Jack White is, this isn’t the last we will ever hear from him…or Meg.

Hi Bryan Here…

Now I believe that Fletch was one of the best comedies of the 1980’s, but its sequel was one of the worst sequels in cinema history.  I mean it killed any chance of their being a third film for a while.  But now they are moving forward to bring back Fletch to the big screen.

Hi Bryan Here…

I was about 13 years old when Stephen King’s The Stand debuted on primetime television back in 1994.  It has been one of my favorite Stephen King books as well as made for tv adaptations of king’s work to date.  Plus it introduced me to the acting talent of Gary Sinise.  Back then and even today, I thought that The Stand was too BIG for just TV.  I mean it is such an epic story that deserves a huge budget and a silver screen opportunity.  Well it seems like some execs have the same feeling.

Hi Bryan Here…

Superman is being Rebooted from the previous film with new actors and crew.  Now Superman Returns was pretty bad.  Terrible story line.  But I thought Brandon Routh was the perfect Superman.  It just seems that Bryan Singer had too many execs trying to make Superman and we got a less than par film.   But maybe they are trying to do this right this time.

Terry Sheridan:
So, where do I fit in?
Lara Croft:
What do you mean? You're the guide.
Terry Sheridan:
I mean, when you think back on the vast scheme of your hugely adventurous life... where do I fit in? Was I the love of your life, or just another bump on the road? Was I time well spent? Four months? More good than bad? Come on, it had to be more than that, am I right?
Lara Croft:
You're right. It was five months.
