CENTURION (BLURAY)

I have not seen this yet, but I really wanted to watch it.  It has got a great cast and one hell of a story line.  The previews looked great for it.  I am looking forward to seeing this.

Plot Synopsis:

AD 117. The Roman Empire stretches from Egypt to Spain, and East as far as the Black Sea. But in northern Britain, the relentless onslaught of conquest has ground to a halt in face of the guerrilla tactics of an elusive enemy: the savage and terrifying tribes known as the Picts.

Quintus, sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, marches north with General Virilus’ legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth and destroy their leader Gorlacon.

But when the legion is ambushed on unfamiliar ground, and Virilus taken captive, Quintus faces a desperate struggle to keep his small platoon alive behind enemy lines, evading remorseless Pict pursuers over harsh terrain, as the band of soldiers race to rescue their General, and to reach the safety of the Roman frontier.

From writer/director, Neil Marshall, “Centurion” is a gripping survival thriller set against a background of conquest and invasion; a pursuit movie in the vein of Deliverance, Last of the Mohicans and Apocalypto.

One of the beloved adventure  Classics from my childhood.  I remember watching this quite a bit growing up.  I haven’t seen it much in my recent years, but I am glad to get to relive the memories on high-def.  Love when these movies come out on BLURAY.

Plot Synopsis: Dick Van Dyke stars as eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts, who creates an extraordinary car called Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It not only drives–but also flies and floats–as it leads him, his two children and his beautiful lady friend, Truly Scrumptious, into a magical world of pirates, castles and endless adventure.

  • THE GOONIES 25TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTOR’S EDITION (BLURAY)

One of my favorite movies of all time.  A true 80’s film of adventure, terror, pirates, “booty” traps, water slides, hidden treasure, and SLOTH.  I wish they still made movies like this today for kids.  It was not dumbed down nor did it ever think to gear it towards any one type of audience.  Any age will enjoy this film.  It is perfect.  In college I started writing a sequel to this movie.  It is still not finished yet, but it is a great story that re-unites all the original Goonies together.  So Richard or Steven, if you are reading, contact me so we can start pre-production up.  A must have.  Packed with extras and a board game plus other gems.

Plot Synopsis: From the imagination of Steven Spielberg, The Goonies plunges a band of small heroes into a swashbuckling surprise-around-every corner quest beyond their wildest dreams! Following a mysterious treasure map into a spectacular underground realm of twisting passages, outrageous booby-traps and a long-lost pirate ship full of golden doubloons, the kids race to stay one step ahead of a family of bumbling bad guys…and a mild mannered monster with a face only a mother could love.

    EXTRAS

  • THE SOUND OF MUSIC: LIMITED COLLECTOR’S EDITION (BLURAY)

Another one of my childhood movies that I love dearly.  The music in this is great and Julie Andrews plays such a lovable character that everyone wished that she was your nanny or mother.  I am glad to have this re-released again on BLURAY loaded with tons of extras.

Plot Synopsis: Share the magical, heartwarming true-life story that has become the most popular family film of all time – Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews lights up the screen as Maria, the spirited young woman who leaves the convent to become governess to the seven children of Captain von Trapp, an autocratic widower whose strict household rules leave no room for music or entertainment.

TOY STORY 3 COLLECTORS EDITION 4 DISC  (BLURAY)

Pixar is flawless so far.  Every one of their films is perfect.  Also they have grown as we all have in that their most recent movies have more adult themes and are not geared towards kids but rather everybody. And Toy Story 3 is perhaps the most adult Pixar film to date. It was a very emotional film for me.  Kleenex was used.  Tons of laughs as well.  And it is always great to have Michael Keaton as a voice role in anything.  A must have.  Tons and tons of extras.

    EXTRAS

  • Day & Night theatrical short
  • Epilogue – The toys’ hilarious send-off
  • “Toys!” – A close look at how the classic characters were updated and new toys were developed

You will get all three films on bluray.  Not worth getting if you already own the first two on bluray, but if you are a completist or a collector then this is the way to go.  Some cool packaging plus all three films is what you will get.

THE LARRY SANDERS SHOW: THE COMPLETE SERIES (DVD)

Finally the entire series has come out for one of the best comedies on tv EVER. I loved this show so much and was sad to see it go, but now I am so glad I can relive those shows again and again.

Live on tape, from Hollywood, its The Larry Sanders Show

The Complete Series: 89 Original Episodes on 17 Discs

At long last, Garry Shandling s comedy series about the twisted inner workings of a late-night talk show, and its host, comes to DVD. All of it.

Larry Sanders (Garry Shandling) is a neurotic late-night talk show host flanked by Artie (Rip Torn), his caustic, foul-mouthed producer, and Hey Now Hank Kingsley (Jeffrey Tambor), his hopelessly insecure, ethically inept sidekick. Off-air it is all train wrecks and egos, but when the lights go down and the theme music kicks in, you get late-night Entertainment Inc. at its finest.

The Larry Sanders Show raised the bar for fearless, acerbic Hollywood satire. The innovative use of both video and film to distinguish on-air events from real-life happenings, displaying the jarring dynamic between the on-camera poise of Larry and his backstage neurosis, was brutally fascinating. And in the company of a patronizing, combative staff and a parade of A-list guests, more than game for putting their own celebrity in the crosshairs, you had a backstage pass to a Hollywood that was shockingly raw and hilarious.

Also starring Linda Doucett, Janeane Garofalo (24), Penny Johnson (24), Wallace Langham (CSI), Bob Odenkirk (Mr. Show, Breaking Bad), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Mary Lynn Rajskub (24), Sarah Silverman (The Sarah Silverman Program), Scott Thompson (Kids In The Hall), and written and produced by Garry Shandling, Peter Tolan (Rescue Me) and Judd Apatow (Knocked Up), The Larry Sanders Show was the hippest TV show . . . probably ever. Late-night would never be the same again.

    EXTRAS

    Deleted scenes & commentaries

    Introduction w/ Shandling

“The Making Of The Larry Sanders Show” doc hosted by Greg Kinnear

Shandling and Apatow on the writer’s process

    56-page booklet

That’s it for the first week in November.  Stay tuned for next week (my birthday) for some excellent releases.
